Default Warp Spiders, Deep Striking and their 2D6" Assault Move

I was looking at the Codex earlier today and noticed that there isn't nothing stopping a Warp Spider Exarch with Surprise Assault from Deep Striking, unloading their weapons into a nearby squad and then using their 2D6" Assault move.

There isn't anything to discuss. This has been covered in the FAQ.

You can indeed jump away and this gives you more mobility then any other deepstriker would get. So they can still hit and run (more shoot and run) when deepstiking.

I've witnessed (felt) first hand how devastating this can be. My unit of firewarriors (when I was still playing Tau) was almost completely wiped by the shooting. He then proceeded to jump out of LoS from almost my entire army. If he wasn't able to do that almost 50% of my army could have shot them, and probably wipe them.

But I think other experiences with this strategy would be welcome. And very enjoyable to read.

Well The rulebook prevents any actual assault, because no where in the Warp spider description state that they can assault after deepstriking.

However looking at anothr unit with a special move during the assault phase (eg: the XV-8 crisis suit). The Suit description state that the cannot assault, but are still allowed to move using their special assault phase move.

I don't see why, by comparaison, the warp sprider would not be allowed to move 2d6" provided that they do not assault.

Edit: stupid getting my rules mixed up

Anyway, can a XV8 use his packs when deepstiking? Otherwise I've been missing out on a whole lot of movement (and suits not dying, thinking TL fusion dude).

You have to think carefully when using the Deepstiking Spiders. Place them to far and they can't shoot, to close and you may scatter on the enemy. Also those 2D6 don't always get you in the clear. Rolling badly could see them in assault range. This isn't that huge a problem when they start on board, as you can manoeuvre them around. But with deepstrike you are relying on that scatter roll.

That is pretty much true with most army/unit thatcan deepstrike. Doubly so when your firing range is 12-18" or so.

Is there a page ref for that XV8 jump after deepstrike, because i've been told by several Vets (who do play Tau) and redshirts, that they don't get to use it after they DS.

IIRC it's in the wargear section. The boxed text at the bottom ehere they talks about the XV-8 and the XV-25 telling what they can and cannot do...so I guess around p27.

I'm at work, without a codex so I cannot be more specific.

Good "estimate" Boneguard, you pegged the page exactly. >.>
Sadly though, they/Jaynes Vets. are right, we cannot make our 6" follow up move after DS'ing.
