Default Changes for a new Codex... if we ever get one

I suppose to just to cause trouble and to get more movement around here I thought I'd bring up a subject that a lot of people have thoughts on. Just to make it clear about me though, I've only played once in the last 10 years or so. Whenever it was 3rd ed. So I'm going mostly on math, what others have suggested, and looking at trends in the newest codexes.

HQ
First off, why is the Avatar an HQ? Other than inspiring, what does he do other that kill stuff? I really think the Avatar should be moved to Heavy Support or Elite. Unless they start having fluff where he speaks and says like "You! Dire Avengers! Go there and take that hill and stay there until releaved", I'm not going to believe he's anything other than a glorified demon or dread. He can still be inspiring as an HS choice.

I think a long time ago, a Warlock had the ability to be a leader. (can anyone confirm or deny?) I'd like to see that again.

Of the Autarch I'd like to see something like "levels" to him. The difference of say a human Captain or General.

I'd just like to see a few more choices for HQ in some way.

How about a venerable Wraithlord HQ? That could be cool! Or bring back the Pirate Captain and Great Harlequin? For those two I'd put the requirement of must include maxed squads of Guardians and Harlies to be able to have them.

Troops
I've noticed lately that squads that were formerly elite or fast are now becoming troops. Eldar already have quite a few troops I think but I think it's also possible to have more. One thing I liked in the current codex was how wraithguard became troops from elite if they had a maxed squad with a warlock. That made sure a squad could not be min/maxed and also forced fluffiness I think if you wanted to play Iyanden. So I think this kind of thing could be added to the S.Scorpions, Banshees, and Fire Dragons. If the squad has the maximum of ten, and has an exarch, then it may count as troops (can't decide on "may" or "must"). For Harlies as well a max squad but must also include a Troop Master. I think this might help the Biel-Tan players that don't want to field any or a lot of Dire Avengers.

Guardians are always a hot topic. A lot of people think they should be a point or two cheaper. I'd rather see them get more to make them worth the points. I'd like to see more variety with them as well. Pretty much, everyone agrees they need grenades. I agree with that. I also think the Shuriken catapult should be 18". In addition I'd like them to be able to upgrade or downgrade (depending on how you look at it) to have Lasblasters. Eldar used to use lasguns and supposedly fluff wise they are supposed to have the best laser technology. I don't see that. Also, I'd like to see them take champions other than Warlocks. Or even a medic of some sort. I also wouldn't mind seeing all Guardians be like the old Ulthwé Black Guardians. A BS4 for Deffenders and WS4 for Storm. Might be a bit powerful but oh well.

I know you are going to say "Hey then they are too much like DA again." I don't agree there. Stat wise they are very different. But how about this: change the DA catapult to Assault 2/Heavy 3. No more having to take bladestorm of course and would then have the ability to shoot the next round.

BTW has anyone ever thought it should be the DA exarch that should get a shuriken cannon? Never made sense to me that the reaper exarch would get an assault weapon when the rest of the squad had heavy. And come on! DA are al about the Shuriken! not the reapers. They are the missile-ly guys.

Elite
There is one troop now I don't think should be a troop…Rangers. Fluff wise I don't think there would ever be enough outsider rangers who band together to warrant being a troop. They should be an elite with the again the possibility of being a troop if a max squad. Also, Pathfinders should stay elite. If there's not many rangers there's certainly not many Pathfinders. There should also be Ranger champions. Some sort of leader to them I think.

A squad of Warlocks! Yes! I'd love to see squads of them as an Elite choice. They can still be body guard for farseers too. I've never really understood them as leaders of guardians squads though. Certainly they are a nice boost but still doesn't make sense to me fluff-wise. Here's an easy way for Ulthwé players to go psycho. I'm not sure about making them Troops if maxed out squad though. I suppose the high points alone would keep them from being abused. Like rangers I'd also want to see a leader upgrade of some sort.

Fast Attack
Well I think WS and SH should stay Fast. I'd like to see the deathspinner have some change to the AP. I've seen it wound everyone in a squad to then see them all make their armor save. It would be cool if it ignored cover saves too. Fluff wise they make no sense. They really shouldn't call them mono-filament. If it truly was then the AP should be like 1 or something. It needs some explanation as to why it damages flesh but can't get through armor.

I honestly don't know what to do about S. Hawks. I've never seen them used. No one wants them.

Vypers should be cheaper I think but otherwise I don't think much else is needed.

Heavy Support
Other than wanting to see more tanks, I'd like there to be a pilot Aspect. I've written up one in my own craftworld fluff but I think It could really happen. All is needed is for x amount of points the BS/WS becomes 4. And in squadrons of two or more one can be upgraded to exarch. How cool would that be?

I'd like some sort of change to support weapon batteries but not sure what. I know I'd like to see them mounted on tanks for sure. I'd love a mini Cobra.

So a bit of rearranging, some point reductions, and/or additions, I think the eldar would be great.

Oh, one more addition and i'm not sure where it would go. Webway Portals that would allow squads and/or tanks to appear from a table side or even deep strike. If it's one thing eldar should be able to do is outmaneuver their opponent. They are mentioned in fluff and I think they are even in the video games. Hell, there's a huge one with a titan walking from in on the cover the the current codex!

So there you have my thoughts. How about yours.

Nice work, man! There are some good suggestions in there. I think it'll be a while longer until we get our next codex, but it's pretty good already. Note how most of your changes are organizational, and not having a huge problem with the units. (unlike necrons and tau)

Oh, excluding swooping hawks that is. Worst 30 dollars I ever spent :P

Suggestion on how to fix SHawks? I don't know much about them. They need something. Make the lasblaster Assault 4? Better AP? Better grenade packs? Change stats or price?

Im not sure i see the justification for having an elite squad become troops just because they are maxed out?

That would be like me suggestin that 3 Crisis suits should be troop, because there is 3 of them.

I have played as Eldar before, against and as, and I think that as a thought exersise these are fine ideas, but in practice, just wouldnt work.

Wouldnt mind seeing more Harlequin stuff though.

I think they should make them less points or drop them. Spiders are better at shooting, higher strength, more mobility, and fire dragons are way better at taking out vehicles. Sticking a bigger price tag and making them kinda good at both makes them kind of bad. Especially with str. 3 guns.

It was something that is used in the current codex for wraithguard. The idea behind it is that it's almost a "forced fluffyness." If you played Iyanden then you could have lots of them as troops instead of as elite. If you play Biel-Tan and want a lot of aspects then you can have more by taking maxed squads to fill up troop spots and they then become scoring units. By maxing the squad it makes you use up points so it makes it harder to min/max. So instead of two five man squads with an exarch in each. They would have one 10man squad with exarch that counts as troop. Yes it could lead to an all Banshee army but why not? There are inherent risks in doing such an army anyway. It's just an idea that doesn't totally overhaul the codex too. It makes you spend points to get it too.

Oh on one note: I believe Fire Dragons should have a 3+ save.

Well on a more fundamental level, we had fleet when run didn't exist. Now that run DOES exist, fleet now has a strictly assault based intent. So Fleet on Eldar units in general is not so great anymore. I think that's where the points are coming from for our expensive guardians. Sure once I was able to run out of cover and assault that objective to contest with some Guardians, but are we paying 1 point, maybe 2 too much? I would hate to believe that GW knew of the changes to fleet and still went through with it.

Now even though our book is the awkward middle child between two editions, I don't find that we have any debilitating problems. range 12 on guardians, alright. Dragons only have a 4+ save, well, they are cheap for what they are I think. Swooping Hawks useless, for every bash I see I see another set of people who swear by them (Similar to Shining Spears opinions). I wouldn't call these weaknesses, more quirks really; odd decisions made by GW.

Many Organization recommendations made: I mean it would be somewhat of a nightmare to try and make an army of specialists into a fair , and multi-tiered system. We have too many diverse lists to try and accommodate. You make wraithguard elite only, Iyanden player(s)(I've only seen one) cry foul, bikes become fast attack, Saim Haim get's aggro etc. I mean there's nothing particularly wrong with changes you have proposed, but at the same time they probably aren't high up on GW's todo list.

I agree. I think for GW if it's not marines then it's not worth it. Everything else is not important. True or not, it's the way it looks with the amount of space marine codexes that have come out compared to others. There are now 5! space marines codexes. If you include the horrible chaos marines then it's 6. And from what I've seen BT might get an update before any other army gets done.

The organizational changes I suggested were because I'm seeing a trend of some squad types becoming troops, BA Assault being one of them. I'd love to see codexes for each craftworld like we are seeing for marine chapters but we all know that's not going to happen. So there needs to be some flexibility in one book so people can play the army they like and be fluffy.

I wonder if placing second in ard boys with the 4th highest showing would effect the armies codex. Even though guard won overall Eldar did better than guard. Anyway I think the heavy support vehicles need some sort of protection to prevent them from getting blown up.

Yeah somekind of Holographic Distortion Field that makes them harder to damage would be really cool.

:P
