Default Dragons versus Wraithguard

Ok, so my shop's owner has gotten back into Tyranids, especially with the new 'dex coming out. Now, he's trying to get some practice in, and I'm probably his best opponent for a while. The question is, against Monstrous Creatures, which would you rather take: Wraithguard or Fire Dragons? Here's the dilemma:

Fire Dragons are cheaper by far, allowing me to field six with an Exarch and Crack shot for about 60% of the points it would take to get a decent Wraithguard squad with Warlock. This would allow buffing of other units with points and generally working in cohesive nature with the rest of the list.

Wraithguard, however, have a far better chance of withstanding the barrage of attacks that the unit is likely to face, what with Genestealers requiring Rending to wound them and their 3+ armor saves against any Gaunts that they encounter. They'd be sucking a lot of points, but they'd also be more durable and probably able to perform for a longer amount of time.

Other things to consider:
I'm only running a Serpent in the list, which is toting around a Bladestorming Avengers squad.
I'm already using proxies - rearranging my list to include a Falcon for my Dragons is not an option.

Suggestions, opinions, etc, very encouraged.

It's an interesting idea. I've certainly never actually thought about it. A bonus is also, when you're going up against something like a landraider, you're still extremely effective outside the 6" death range. Plus, they would be the BANE of monoliths. ;D I would go for it and see how it works. I would get some, but they're so dang expensive.

given *apparently* nids are losing eternal warrior, I would go for wraithguard as their guns instakill on a 6 so you are pretty much certain to kill that gribbly but they are more expensive and would die in combat. Also, mind war could be effective on the big'uns.

Being a fan of the Wraiths myself you know where my vote went. Seeing as your Fire Dragons would be running across the table the Wraiths are by far the better option. Sure they are expensive but they are hard as hell (if supported right). Also the Wraithcannon can remove a Carnifex with full wounds. In any case the Wraiths would also hold their own in CC.

The Fire Dragons would be good if they got a transport, but like you said it isn't an option to get a Falcon. You could however give the Serpent to them for the first turn and then go back for your Avenger. This would be rather time consuming. But seeing as Fire Dragons (normally) don't survive the turn after they fired, you get a free serpent (free as in available, not free in points). ;D

Yeah, Dragons are best if you have a Falcon free to transport them, if not I'd go with Wraithguard. If you give the Warlock Enhance (if you can even do that now, it's been a while since I played) then it will make them harder to take out in combat too.

You can also get twice as many dragons for the price of a wraithguard. We Eldar need the points, so I voted dragons.

AP1 or not, dragons are easier on the wallet.

A tactic I've seen used in the local tournament seen;

10 Wraithguard
Spirit Seer
Enhance/conceal
Eldrad.

This unit can take sooo much punishment, and dish it out on units too, and with the potential of removing Eternal Warrior on all nids, the wraithcannons will do fantastic! Against shooting they are immensly more survivable, and they are scoring.

I like a unit of 10 Wraithguards and a spiritseer. It is a tough unit that can walk across a board, and split an opponents army in half.

It also counts as a troop choice.

I have taken Fire Dragons several times and they never get a shot off. They usually get priority targeting and die a swift death.

The FDs and WGs are some pretty cool models and look good on the board...
