Another day, another tactica....

Overview: Reapers, the word strikes fear into even the most hardy spacemarine.... But how should you use them?

Numbers: Depending on the exarch set up will determine your numbers. I generally like to take them in squads of 5 (4 + Exarch). Occasionally I will run them in squads of 4 (3+ exarch) and if I want to keep the tempest launcher hidden, squads of 3. But I generaly advise full squad, it doesn't take much to force Ld checks on these bad boys.

Deployment: High up with good view of the battle. Or in a refused flank position. They can quite often scare people just by having them on the board. Cover is usually a very good idea though. With a small tempest squad, put them behind cover. The tempest launcher can cause havoc to the enemy.

Exarch: I see there as being 2 exarch choices that really stand out, EML fast shot exarch, or the tempest launcher crack shot combo. These are relatively cheap for the damage they can do. fast shot Tempest is okay, but too expensive for my liking. I would honestly say never take both powers, those points are better somewhere else.

Targets: Anything but vehicles generally. Light walkers (Sentinels, Warwalkers) and light vehicles (Vypers, raiders, trukks) are all okay, but you should have other units to take them out.

Scythes of the Reaper Exarch: What weapons should I take on my leader? If you are taking a small squad, I'd advise the tempest launcher. It does huge damage. Larger squads I'd advise the EML combo. Main reason being, that many reaper shots should kill the enemy without the need for the tempest launcher. I also like the EML combo, because it can cause instant death, as well as bust up those drop-pod dreadnoughts. Plus the 2 blast shots of plasma missile goodness are quite damaging to horde units. The tempest launcher is still a fantastic weapon, but it is really only at its best against MEQ.

Adding Some OOMPH: Some people like to take an Autarch with reaper launcher... I personally think its a waste. Fortune seers however really help these guys when in cover. They die easier than marines, so the extra defense makes them that bit better. Doomseers also help huge. Re-rolling those unlucky 2s and 1s... Love It!


DO Move if needed. Firelanes help these guys, so don't be afraid to move to better firing positions.
DONT Take the shuriken cannon. Sure it allows mobile fire, but you don't want that. If you want a cheap Exarch, use a reaper launcher.
DO Buy a wave serpent occasionally. With 1/3 missions being dawn of war, that can be a first turn of 0 shooting, with possible more because of lack of vision. The wave serpent can get them on in prime position quickly, and provid safety from deep striking units. Plus it can be used with other units too...
DONT take an EML fast shot exarch as a pure tank hunter. It sounds good, but you are honestly wasting your points. Use it rarely, say if a vehicle needs to be busted and everything else has missed. Otherwise, target enemy units.
DO Use plasma missiles against marines. Doom means on average 3/4 marines is wounded. 2 shots means about 6 wounds a turn, that causes pinning, and then the rest fire. Sometimes that blast is better than the higher AP.

I'm readin this to get a bit of information on how to best play eldar, but u keep talking about using plasma grenades on the Reapers?

Am i missing something here, cause i've gone through the codex like 5 times nd i still havent found anything about them having a choice of missile types, so could you clarify?

The Dark reaper Exarch can be armed with an Eldar Missile Launcher. The Eml can either fire Krak Missiles or Plasma Missiles. Look under the profile for Eldar Missile Launcher, that should help ya out.

best with just a reaper launcher like everyone else, so the squad has the same primary target. barrin that, the only other viable options i've used are the mortar squad with minimized numbers and a crack tempest, or the maxxed out squad with a shricannon guy so they can still shoot while reloacating, but 4 other guys firing away, hitting often, and penetrating heavy inf...

The second squad is more interesting to me, because it forces the oppents move, either away out of LOS, or closer to charge the threat... at which pint you bolt and move, using your shrican exarch to dick with them, as you position your counter charge. Reapers are a prime target for MEQ. Use that to bait them and they will fall into your jaws (or drawers, or whatever). The shrcan guy allows you to not deal with the 'should I stay and fire' issue, knowing that you can move out of charge range and still get some nasty little shots on them, and do the same the next round.Knowing that you cant close with a guy who is picking you to bits 1 model at a time annoys people, so you can lead them around the board by tempting them with something they REALLY want to kill, but just can't close with.

The thing is I really like the Fast Shot EML combo. If you discipline yourself enough not to shoot at tanks, it really helps. Reasons being.
1. Instant death: It can get rid of things like nobs, as well as neutralize FNP.
2. Monstrous Creatures: Majority MCS are toughness 5+. Being S8 means you are wounding on 2's still.
3. Hordes: 2 Plasma Missile shots is prety powerful.... have doom nearby and it does well against MEQ. Plus can cause pinning....

My cousin has used the Shuriken Cannon once. He placed the unit near a Falcon, and when he relocated, the Shuriken Cannon was able to shoot.


The thing about Dark Reapers, for what they can do (especially the EML fast shot), is that the unit is so small and far away from the rest of the Eldar army that they become largely ignored; the priority is the close combat specialists and short-range specialists that are in your face at the moment; you can't afford to divert your attacks against the Dark Reapers. Even in army lists that stand back and shoot, the Eldar can put up more "threatening" targets like Fire Prisms, Wraithlords, and War Walker squadrons.

The only game against Eldar I've been able to actually damage or wound the Dark Reapers was when my cousin built a random list where he took three units of Dark Reapers and faced a mechanized Tau army.
