Default Advice on Army Expansion

ok, here is what my current army consists of:

-farseer
-6 banshees, exarch with executioner
-6 fire dragons, exarch with firepike
-wave serpent with shuricannon, turret weapon can be anything
-2 squads of 10 avengers, exarch with power weapon/shimmershield
-6 hawks, exarch
-5 reapers, exarch with tempest launcher
-2 war walkers

now, my current expansion will consist of 4 extra banshees and jain zar, asurmen or yriel, and a wraithlord. i know some of you will say i need more serpents, but i have no problem with moving my infantry around, because i mostly dont move them at all. i had a lot of trouble with taking down marines, necrons and warriors quickly, so the banshee expansion will make them nasty.

after all the points i spend on my farseer, i just cant seem to make up for them, no matter how much i try. i think having asurmen or yriel will do a better job at it. i know the farseer is made to bolster your army, but thats not working for me. there is a limit on units that the farseer can help during a game, and yes i have thought about a 2nd farseer, but it isnt gonna work out either.

the expansion after this will include these in order:
1. 3rd war walker
2. wraithguard
3. shining spears
4. more dire avengers

i would like to hear your opinions on this, and i would like to hear about what the advantages of getting yriel are, since using search or looking through the important eldar topics didnt help me find any articles on him.

Mr. OP, you want Shining Spears. They add some good ooomph when you're facing... well, anything really. They've been useful for me at anywhere from 1000 to 2000 (at which point they were seminole units) against anything from Orks to Tau. I like a squad of 4 with a Speartarch if you're looking to replace you're current Farseer, the Autarch also does well with Yriel as well: you get the 2 Autarch boost to Reserves Rolls and some variation in the output.

The other thing that would be good is a 3rd unit of Dire Avengers. I'm assuming the points level is reaching around 2000, and around there you need at least 3 units of Troops for capturing. Actually I liked having 4 but one was a small~ish squad of Jetbike Guardians and another was a squad of Storm Guardians in a Serpent with Fusion Guns. Both performed admirably and captured my only objectives, neither of my Dire Avenger squads captured anything :P. Just food for thought, that maybe you don't want more Avengers but you do want more troops :huh:.

Anyway, just my $0.02

thanks. yea my main concern was my lack of troops, so i was also considering rangers. but i was wondering that if they were pathfinders, and they were in 4+ cover, if they would technically have a 2+. is that true? i know it seems like a dumb question, but it just blows my mind...

ive been thinking about spears, i want to work on my core army before worrying about flankers.

Sure do. Flamers make them cry though so watch out for drop pods with tac squads or outflanking sentinels.

Another problem is damage out put/ cost. For 10 pathfinders (which is what i think you need to get the ammount of damage out that you need) you're paying a hefty price.

Actually, I think a lot of people prefer to hide them is cover in small units and just chip away at things while the rest of the army bashes stuff Eldar style. That way the unit isn't doing as much damage in one round and drawing attention to itself, thus getting wiped out a lot faster. If you keep them shooting pretty much the entire game but only have ~6 they may end up doing more damage than a squad of 10 that gets blasted on turn 2 by fast assaulters, while not being quite as 'useless' as a minimum squad of 5.

It really depends on how they fit into your army. I like the idea of doing a list centered on Rangers/Pathfinders, but the majority of my army is heavily mechanized and that would leave them with little backup. As well as tying me down to a certain area. However, if you had a Hybrid force that needed some extra Rending shooting, then I think they'd be perfect. And it looks to me like you've got a Hybrid force going there...

well, their pretty expensive for what they do, especially compared to the tau's sniper rifle which is what im used to, so thats out for me. for troops, im gonna see if i can get a 10-man wraithguard with spiritseer squad goin.
