Default Defend Exarch Power

Quick little question:
I think the Defend power means that you subtract one from the number of attacks a model can make (so charging units would get their normal # of attacks, units with 2 attacks would only get one, etc.) except if the model could only attack once to begin with.

The way it's worded though, it almost makes it sound like it's a cumulative effect though. Like: Round 1 (4-1) 3 attacks, Round 2 (3-1) 2 attacks, Round 3 (2-1) 1 attack...

Just asking for feedback. I think it's GW's screwy wording and you only ever subtract 1 attack and it's not cumulative.

from what it looks like, it seems they lose one to begin with then another one every other turn, because it says in each assault phase.

No, no, no. It means that every model, while locked in assault with dire avengers, always has 1 less attack. If they charge in with 4 attacks each, theyll get 3 attacks each. Next turn, the 3 would reduce to 2 without the bonus attack, and it would STAY at 2.

That' what I thought Warpspiderman, although RAW did make it sound like runer60000's interpretation was plausible. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't shafting myself. Thanks guys.
