Default What are the Eldar?

I picked up an Eldar codex today out of curiosity. They look like a very fun/interesting army.

After skimming through the codex a bit, trying to get an idea of what this army is about... i'm still not sure.

Are they a shooty army? An assault army? A mech army? More versatile than i think?

I play Tau, and i guess i'm just not used to so many different unit options. (Tau have 18 different units including Special Characters. Eldar have 26, plus 6 options of Phoenix lords?)

Eldar are genrally a mass of units that are speciaists. We have units the are fatasic in assault, but suffer when shooting/being shot at. Other units dominate ranged combat, but die easily to combat. Others are fist hit and run shooty units, but are relatively short ranged.

the eldar are the specialist of 40K. all of their units are tailored to a specific roll on the battlefield. for example, dire avengers are excellent close range shooting units against light infantry, but are not equipped as effective assault units. so if the dire avengers shot a unit of 10 guardsmen they would get 20 shots (no exarch) 13.33 hits, 8.88 wounds, and 8.88 dead guard. if they assaulted the same unit without shooting they would get 20 attacks 13.33 hits, 6.66 wounds, and 4.44 dead guard. so they are much more effective at shooting than at assault. where as scorpions would be the opposite of them better at assaulting the guard, but less effective at shooting.

Here is a *brief* overview of the aspect warriors:

Striking Scorpions:

Striking Scorpions are the unit that Eldar would best deploy to deal with horde armies in CC, they get the most attacks (4 on the charge) and a +1 Strength bonus for having a striking scorpion chainsword.
Strong against: Horde Weaker against: Terminators and MEQs

Howling Banshees:

These ladies are quite different to their Scorpion counterparts, they may be weaker but they carry powerswords, so they can cut through any armour.
Strong against: MEQs and Terminators Weaker against: Horde, things with invulnerable saves.

Swooping Hawks:

These are arguably the most manuevrable unit in the 40k game, being able to move from one side of the board to the other in one turn. They are great at taking out light infantry as they specialise in AP5.
Strong against: Light Infantry and hordes Weaker against: Monstrous Creatures, MEQs and Termies.

Warp Spiders:

These are also extremely maneuvrable, they can move up to 30" in one turn (although at this speed they will lose one member to the warp). They pack relatively high strength weapons with a good rate of fire, so they are great at ambushing when combined with their speed.
Strong against: Infantry, Vehicles (mainly rear armour) Weaker against: CC specialists, monstrous creatures.

Shining Spears:

These are also very fast, as they are mounted on jetbikes. They are armed with Lances, so they are effective at taking down vehicles, and are potent in the first round of assault.
Strong against: Infantry, vehicles. Weaker against: Hordes and anything that can keep up with them.

Dire Avengers:

These blue guys can be extremely effective when used correctly, they can wipe out a whole platoon of guardsmen in one turn. They can have 3 shots each when you purchase the Exarch power Bladestorm, so they can rip light infantry apart and charge if necessary to finish on the remnants of the squad.
Strong against: Light infantry Weaker against: Monstrous creatures, vehicles, heavy infantry.

Hope you like this summary of all of the aspect warriors.
Hope this helps.

Help??? Dang dude, that is awsome. Thank you for taking the time.

Q: With their almost universal S3 T3 how well suited are the Eldar at CC? I noticed they'll almost always be going first.

Is this right? A 10-woman squad of Howling Banchees with an Exarch (Mirrorsowrds) assaults a 10man SM tac squad. Going 1st with thier i10 they get 32 attacks = 16hits = 5-6 Casualties for a whopping 192pts? Wow.
