Default guessing guns

i'm curious as to if you still need to roll for bs skill if you manage to guess the range correctly with a d-cannon or shadow weaver?

also just to check, the d-cannon has a 24" range right?

thankyou ^^

You're correct about the D-cannon's range, and guess range weapons never have to use Bs, in 3rd edition they have to guess the range, and in 4th you scatter like ordinance, but do more scattering when out of LoS.

are d-cannons very effective at all?

i was having a peeky at them, and it works out at 150 points to add three to your arsenal. (that they're the most strongest weapons the eldar have is nice too), i figure that if they sit behind cover they'd be quite a deterrant for anything which feels like getting too close. but i'm curious about how effective they are in real terms, thanks ^^

The high strength, low ap and the blast ensure that the D cannon can destroy anything that gets too close. However the D cannon is very vulnerable - especially now due to the fact that you can no longer shield your units. I wouldn't recommend them for two reasons:

Firstly - vulnerability. All the opponent has to do to get rid of them is to kill two Eldar guardians - this makes the platform very vulnerable to deepstriking units and the D cannon is very expensive...

Secondly - short range. This is no Tau broadside battlesuit. The D cannon will be ineffective for some time before it gets into range and by that time the enemy units will be horribly too close for comfort anyway. I prefer Dark Reapers fro killing units from distance...

you can toss a warlock(conceal) in with the three platforms and place them out of LOS i guess, may improve their surviveability somewhat. the range is really what would put me off them. the alluring factor is not requiring the fragile eldar to have to eyeball the target (break total blocking cover at all).

a well placed shadow weaver would have a 48" radius over the battlefield also, not requiring LOS, less str and no ap to speak of, but causing a pinning check. i think against a hoard low ld army these could quite possibly rock.

the main draw of both being that not much return fire should be coming their way.

Your main question has already been answered, but you are wrong to think you need to guess the range. In 4th edition, guess range weapons no longer require you to actually guess the range. Read the rulebook.

If you want fun vs horde armies take vibro cannons.

I used to love these.

IMO. D-Cannons are inferior compared to other heavy support choices you could take. For all the same reasons Tau Killer said.

so let me get this strait, to shoot the d-cannon you first place the target on an enemy model within range and roll for scatter, 1d6, and you can shoot when you don't have line of sight, say behind a forest, but then you roll 2d6 for scatter and take the highest?
last game we had a big argument on the exact rules about it and whether it required line of sight.
