Default Monoliths, had problems?

well I've been having some trouble lately with these giant cubes of death, and I've been wondering what you think, sometimes they just seem overpowered, many games I've seen it take the entire oppenent's army by itself, some people say thats just because the other guy wasn't prepared, but sometimes you almost can't be, especially if your team relies on special rules to kill vehicles, like nearly every anti vehicle eldar unit. In all my games against my friend I have beaten his deathwing, I have beaten his nids, all have been good, close games, but then theres his necrons, I have glanced the monolith a total of 3 times with my vibro cannon, those are times when either he forgets I have it, or he fails to kill the 2-man crew the first turn it arrives. I just don't feel like any one unit should be that powerful, C'tan? sure, I can run away from him and attempt to phase him out, but not that > monolith.

Well...

For the millionairre I would suggest the Super Heavy Type II Scorpion, or the ever towering Revenant Titan. The extravagant Eldar player may wish to purchase a Vampire Hunter strike craft to enhance his anti-monolith capabilities.

For the middle-class man either a Fire Prism teamed up with a couple of Storm Guardian squads equppied with Haywire Grenades, or a squad of Wraithguard.
Ten Fire Dragons mounted in a Wave Serpent can be pretty effective too.
Another choice is a Wraithlord or two, complete with Bright Lances, or Eldar Missile Launchers to attack from range.
Another option is two batteries of 3 D-Cannons each.

The lower-class peasant (such as myself) will have to make do with Singing Spears or Bright Lances either mounted on Vypers or in squads of Guardians.

;D

Those are pretty much all the options that spring to mind. :P

Ive faced the Monolith many times with my Ulthwe and never had any problems in taking it down. Also in small games it does make the Cron force easier to phase out as they are quite expensive.

I usually have my Seer Council destroy it with Singing Spears. Failing that A WL or Avatar can deal with it in combat plus these two units should be advancing on almost any Cron force anyway so if the Monolith didnt deep-strike you shouldnt have to go to far out of your way to deal with it.

And if it is deep striked, well that would put it next to your weapons batteries right?
I know what you mean though, with always 14 14 14 and only a single dice rolled for penetration per hit, it can be hard to take these things out.
But have you considered how easy they would be to take out with Wraithcannon?
5 Wraiths in a WS, dropping out to face it, you're looking at 3-4 hits, so thats at least one penetrating hit. Admitteldy this is an expensive unit, but most Necron armies will have to commit a lot of firepower to taking this unit out. Just be careful with the wave serpent.

You require at least S8 to hurt the monolith. Thats the main reason why S9 Singing spears work great, especially when coupled with the high BS of Warlocks and Farseers.

does ap come into play with vehicles at all?

and i take it you need to roll a 5 with a singing spear once you hit it?

also curious.. is there an eldar psychic power which increases str and could that potentially be used with the singing spear too? even a +1 increase would give a str 12 weapon with bs 4/5 ^^

Well that would be like me telling you the armour value of the Monolith after saying what S a Singing Spear is wouldnt it , but yes.

AP only comes into play if it is AP1, if it is then it always counts as a penetrating hit even if you only glance the vehicle. Also if a weapon has AP - , then you can only ever cause glancing hits with it.

Nope, AP doesn't affect vehicles usually. Although I think AP 1 weapons auto-penetrate...

And it's not possible to boost your strength past 10 by any means.
