Default Vibro Trap

I have had an idea that could really hurt hordes. Vibrocannons can shoot through combats, so tie a squad of combat thingehs (hormagaunts) with a wraithlord, then vibrocannon them to death! This is what i call "the vibro-trap". This makes the wraithlord getting bogged down in infantry an okay thing, cause you can give support to him (d6 hits a turn). Anyone think this would be an okay idea? Could i get my first karma for it? lol

That's quite a cool idea.

However you won't get a karma, because you asked for it =P the best way to get karma is to not try to get karma.

The slight problem is that both your wraithlords and your vibrocannons are heavy support choices.

Or else you'd have an extremely characterful anti-horde army. With a battleline of wraithlords and supporting vibrocannon batteries.

If you replace the wraithlords with a congo-line of guardians then it works well.

Each turn the hormagaunts take one guardian who then gets vibrocanoned to hell and back along with (hopefully) more 'nids.

Hormagaunts cost more than guardians and so you can afford 5 guardians for every 4 hormagaunts.

This would also work wonders when the 'fexes come in.

If you use a wraithlord, in all practicality it would just help him plow through the combat faster. I suppose it could save his life if he were to be charged by genestealers, but used in this manner its effectiveness would be limited. At the end of the day- it's still 6 max hits on the unit with an armor save allowed, and the pinning is immaterial in combat.

Using living Eldar- the practice would just seem barbaric.

But it is an interesting idea.

It's okay to nominate your own posts if you feel they are something not being appreciated.
Honestly though, Karma is easily gained through the myriad of quizzes that make their rounds.

In Apocalypse I could see this being a fun little tactic. It meshes closely with what you wanted (an undead sonic attack army). Could be useful depending heavily on rolls really.

That does bring up a (probably already asked and answered - but I'll go for it anyway) targeting question.

If you hit a close combat with a vibrocannon, would that hit every unit tied up in the combat - since it's a whirling swirling mess, or just the actual units touched?

Also, can the cannon be used to pick off IC's that are in line with other units?

It ought to hit both units although unfortunately the FAQ doesn't qutie answer this properly. It does however, say that it can hit friendly units and then seperately it says it can hit units in combat so I would say that they can be hit as are all the units in the combat (this also takes the LoS rules as a precedent where the combat as a whole is treated as blocking LoS not just your troops). Unfortunately RAW will say that you only hit the squads touched by the line and so can pick out enemy squads from combat.

By "in line with" I presume you simply mean for targetting the vibrocannon. If he is on his own then yes as he hasn't been chosen as the target, if he has joined a squad then the hits are allocated to the squad.

And Yriel, you could use a congo line of wraithguard instead, not so barbaric then is it? Besides Saim Hann is already seen as barbaric so you could do it with them.
