Default Falcon or Reapers? 1000 Point list:

Under 4th Edition Dark Reapers have become far less effective.

So i am considering putting a Falcon into my army instead of my normal five man squad.

It would have a Star Cannon, Shuri. Cannon and Holo-Field. Making it one of the hardest tanks in the game to destroy. This is due to the fact that reapers now can normally only get one/two turns of shooting off before being destroyed.

Heres the list that it would probably be put in:

CraftWorld of Charon Strikeforce: Ulthwe Rules: 1000 Points.

8 man seer council:
Farseer: Eldamari: Witchblade/Fortune.
Farseer: Ertia: Singing Spear/Guide.
Farseer: sonqueel: MindWar
Warlock: Enhance
Warlock: Embolden
Warlock: Augment
Warlock
Warlock

Avatar

Wraithlord: BL/2 Flamers

Falcon: StarCannon, ShuriCannon, Holofield

12 Guardians(inc weapon crew): BL
Warlock: Conceal

12 Guardians(inc weapon crew): Star Cannon
Warlock: Conceal

Points: 1002

So what do you think. Reapers or Falcon. Also any suggestions for the list?.

Well.... I sould have to say; go for the reapers. You already have one falcon. And all of your weapon points have BL's so you don't really have any anti-troop weapons.

The list i have put up has replaced the reapers with the Falcon (and has a few other minor things with the extra points).

The list would normally look like this:

6 man seer council:
Farseer: Eldamari: Witchblade/Fortune.
Farseer: Ertia: Guide.
Farseer: sonqueel: MindWar
Warlock: Enhance
Warlock: Embolden
Warlock: Augment

Wraithlord: BL/2 Flamers

5 Reapers: Exarch w/ EML, Fast Shot

12 Guardians(inc weapon crew): BL
Warlock: Conceal

12 Guardians(inc weapon crew): Star Cannon
Warlock: Conceal

To be honest I prefer your original list.* Here's why:

Your choice of weaponry is:

4 reaper launchers and an EMS or a starcannon, shuriken cannon and Pulse laser.
Considering the relative BSs of the units using these weapons I have to say that I prefer the Reaper launchers and EMS.* I have worked out that against a normal unit of space marines the reaper squad will on average kill 4.94 Marines per turn (using Krak) while the Falcon can only expect to kill 2.5 Marines per turn.* Only half as many.* Obviously against units in much harder armour (for example Terminators) the falcon will do much better but since most units aren't in terminator armour...

Also think of this - one railgun can kill one falcon per turn, but that same railgun can only kill one reaper per turn.* Yes reaper are vulnerable to infantry weapons but if you stick Reapers as far back as possible preferably behind cover those infantry weapons will be out of range and the only weapons which could harm them will be used on other units - such as the wraithlord.

Your first list always has two unnecessary warlocks which don't really do much - the six man council is fine.

Hmmm.

I'm still undecided, as most boards are only 48" wide it is extremely hard to keep the Reapers out of range of weapons that devestate them, particulary when you consider the enmey deployment zone is normally 12". This leaves heavy bolters in range, autocannons etc.

Also a railgun submunition will normally kill a whole reaper squad, particularly if they have been hit by a marker light (which they usually are if in cover).

The Reapers do cause more damage but whatever way it is looked at they are now far more vulnerable.

The two extra warlocks are just to fill out points really, plus its nice to take a warlock off that you don't need when one dies.

I'm stuck on this one, but personally I would go for the Falcon. I'd also put a Spirit Stone on the Falcon, it's a nice cheap upgrade which will increase the Falcon's durability no-end.

A Railgun is far more effective against Dark Reapers than it is against the Falcon. As you pointed out Veq, a submunition round can make short work of those Reapers, but even a solid shot Railgun hit will be unlikely to do anything against a Falcon which has moved over 6 inches, has a Holo-field and is protected by a Spirit Stone.

I think i'll proxy one for a few games and see how it goes as i don't actually own a Falcon yet.

What do you reckon on the secondary weapons, should i upgrade to the shuri cannon, and what other weapon should i take, bearing in mind what other weapons are in the army i have posted up.

Hmm... I used a bad example. I always forget about the possible submunition round.

I'd say that if you have a falcon, considering that you already have two brightlances, a starcannon and a shuriken cannon are definitely the best way to go - turn the Falcon into an ultimate infantry killer and also a scourge of weakly armoured vehicles.

yup tau killer, a sub round (markerlighted of course!) would make mincemeant out of a VERY expensive squad there. Also heavy bolters and even light weapons fire can crush those reapers. Sad but in 1000pts i wouldnt rely on them as your best heavy support. As has been laready said, the falcon can be kitted out to complement the rest of your army nicely (anti-troop). And is also a very nasty object to remove from the battlefield! especially when given holofields!
