Default Dire Avengers

Right, so what do people think about them. I've noticed that people say that they're c@@p compared to guardians and a waste of points. Ok, they cost 4 points more than guardians, but for that they get a better ws, bs, I, Ld and Sv. The exarch too with its power weapon and exarch can be relitavely amazing in cc. I find Dire Avengers useful in guarding a strong flank of my army - or guarding an objective.

Personally i dont use em much but i have a friend who does.

Basically they are ment to hold combat to a bloody end.

Now the move in and shoot taking massive casualties but 3-4 can usually make combat.

Ok now when you hit combat with them keep your exarch away from the actuall fighting say 5'' just incase of enemy special rules. then next round you pile him in all by himself.

Ok all you other avengers are dead the exarch is alone in combat and can only be hit ona 6 and can negate 1 enemy attack.

Now you have almost a full unit sitting there trying to kill this 1 guy for atleast a turn or 2.

As my friend Branden does he has some reapers soffen up the enemy down to 1/2 strength. Then the avengers hit the combat.

And really who fears 4 dire avengers in combat?

But you might take out something useful with that sword of his.

I mean think of the name dire avengers imo i'm thinking a dire fight to the last man and thats exactly what they are good for.

Their small squad sizes can get a bit annoying though. Seeing as you buy box sets of 8 thta's usually the amount people use.

I'm not sure what to think of these guys, they're like a better version of Defenders but without the psychic tricks of the Warlock. The Exarch's abilities only apply to himself, and I don't like wasting a squad to put one guy into combat to tie them up (I used to play an Irish opoonent who could literllay roll 6's on command). So assault is out, though they will do a better job than Joe Guardian if you decide to. They're sort of all rounders really, and as such I don't see that they belong in a specialised force like the Eldar.

They can be useful as a nicely advanced fire-base. Put them in some cover near and objective and your opponent will have a hard time getting through. They are fast, reasonably armoured, short ranged with nsaty fairepower, but I can't think of a particular role for them. Maybe just as backup for anyone in trouble?

I haven't used this tactic yet but i'm planning on infiltrating my striking scorpians near the enemy. And racing a squad of dire avengers up in a wave serpant to cause utter dismay amongst their forces whilst my scorpians move in for the kill.

There you go, exactly what I was thinking. Dire Avengers are perfect squads to put in Wave Serpents and Falcons, their small numbers mean that a few artillery strikes will send them packing, but a heavy transport like the Wave Serpent will keep them around for just long enough to throw their punch where you need it, I personally like this guys a lot, especially more then guardians.

Hmm...I've never put my Dire Avengers into wave serpents (I don't think that they're that special!) but I often find that they will tend to get mostly ignored by the enemy who will prefer the more dangerous looking targets (such as Fire Dragons) and so the Dire Avengers can often...surprise them in a rather nasty way ;D

Ya i know what you mean there but i'll have to point out its more of a jab than a punch but it can throw your enemy off balance. A pack of these guys actually shot down my squad of wych's once all but the succubus then it was an epic battle to the end for her when she failed her ld save.

Anyways i have a question i formatted my comp recently and lost my eldar dex the dire sword doesnt cost over 15 pts does it? i assumed it would be like 10 but i'm thinking it might have been 20

I beleive it should be 20 then, the Diresword is after all a powerful weapon, much like a force weapon. So of corse it would be more then a simple power weapon is.
