Maugan Ra was once an ordinary soldier from the craftworld of Altansar. However Altansar was doomed - it was caught in a massive warp storm. For five hundred years the Altansar eldar battled against it but it was no good. the warp storm destroyed Altansar leaving Maugan Ra as the only survivor. he was understandably furious and devastated at the loss of Eldar lives and vowed to travel the galaxy, hunting down and destroying cold bloodedly and without mercy, all those who oppose the Eldar. Thus he erected the shrine of the Dark Reaper and began his work...

The Dark Reaper shrine was founded before the fall of Altansar. Ra was the sole survivor from the shrine, which suggests that he had already founded it. The Warp storm was an exapansion in the Eye of Terror, and there are rumours that it may have arisen from the depths, (new GW plot hook).
Now here I run into some difficulty. The Phoenix lords are all the students of Asurmen, and they all founded their own shrines to practice their own form of the Art of Khaine. So what is an already established phoenix lord doing running a temple whilst all the others are off being heroes where they are needed? Do the phoenix lords act as normal exarchs from time to time, training those who have started down the path of the warrior? For that matter, how does the fall of altansar compare to the origin of the phoenix lords on the Eldar timeline? Did they become phoenix lords over a period of time, or could they simply not be bothered taking off their armour after a hard days training once too many times? Any suggestions? |

They were the best. Exarchs of Exarchs. Centuries of training and battle experience hardened many times over. SO yes over a loooonge period of time. I dunno bout training they may have done it before but not now. I dunno exactly what magun ra is doing. I heard something about a mission in the eot. I just know the pheonix lords are the origionals and the best and they trained with the best and the experience of all fallen exarchs of their shringe go to them so they get even better. Or at least that is what I read.

k, my understanding is, the first phoenix lords learnt from Asurmen. They then went from world to world, training warriors. These warriors would then create their own shrines. Phoenix lords do not settle in one place, they wander the webway.
The contradiction, comes here. Was Maunga Ra with the Craftworld as it was destroyed? Did he stay at one place for 500 years? (uncharacteristic of a phoenix lord) He might not have a shrine to call home but every shrine is his home, being his home craftworld, its possible there was a dark reaper shrine there which he might have stayed at when he was there. And he, despite usually travelling as all phoenix lords do, stayed at Altansar during the time of its destruction to try and save it. So like all other phoenix lords, he has no real home shrine, he prolly just stayed at a normal dark reaper shrine on Altansar for a long time as a phoenix lord. Its the most plausible theory i cna come up with

I remember reading in the 2nd edition codex that phoenix lords sometimes died in battle but the armor was donned again by another exarch and the combined knowledge and memories of everyone who'd ever been in that armor was saved by spirit stones so the exarch would have the stats of the phoenix lord. Anyone else see that?

yeah, but when u get pulled into the eye of terror, ur armour's there, it stays there, no exarchs gonna wander around in a craftworld that doesn't exist (well it reappeared eventually, but thats besides the point), thus the exarch escaped whilst he donned the armour. He didn't die and have some other exarch find it.
