I was away in germany for a while and while I was gone a couple of things happened. My little brother decided he wanted to get on my sata hard drive, so he turned off the comp, plugged in the power and sata cords... then he decided to plug the power for a floppy into the far right where you put the connector things. Now the motor is dead (along with his processor and probably motherboard) and I was wondering if I take it in would I be able to get my data recovered? I am thinking they could just take the platters out and put them in a new HD... at the worst put it all on a disk at best sell me the new HD, but im not sure if they would do this or if its possible.
My other problem is with our modem. We have a high speed phone modem (AT&T I think) and it overheats and dies on us (we loose the net light). I know this isnt normal because it says it should be left on for three days to optimize the connection to the net... We have a big fan blowing on it in an air conditioned house but the tech support says there is nothing wrong and refuses to send someone out to look at it. Anyone have any advice for this problem? (we cant buy a new one, not enough money for a while).

The best you can do is take it in. If they can't get your data back it's gone for good, as fixing a broken HDD costs $1500+, ridiculous I know.
Can't help with your modem sorry . Never worked on them before.Dante

I will say that would cost you a lot of money. Lot. of. money.
BTW from personal experience, seagate is the best hard drive company, and rarely break, im not sure at all what you mean by floppy, and SATA, considering the connectors are wildly different.... But my WD or Maxtor i cant be bothered to look is starting to fail on me. Its got the infernal clicking..... If you got a spare aquarium with pump you could jimmy-rig your own clean room. Ive heard that you put the tank upside down on the edge of a table, attach like plastic or something with gloves to reach in, built into the tank rig, and turn it on, keep all the tools and stuff already in there, and you COULD manually swap the platters out yourself, a guy i know has done it. GL doing it if your daring. [hr] For the modem, id suggest opening it up, exercise extreme caution, and use a can of that air, or a vacuum to clean any dust from within. And perhaps try pluggin it into a different power outlet, could a little too much power going into it, overheating the modem, also try using a different power supply. Match connectors and power input if you try a different power supply. Also google is your friend. (This is seriously what i was taught in my technician course) Try searching the EXACT name and model, there should be a set of numbers for the model, and include overheating. Also ensure modem is off of any heat sources, try keeping it in the open, and putting it on "stands" so it isnt near any flat surface, you know, like legs of a table.
