Default Installing Fedora Linux....

I need a wee bit of help on installing Linux Fedora 10 onto my Laptop. It cuts to a screen and nothing is on it - just a purple screen with a planet in the right part.

What do I do to complete the installation and how do I partition my Hard Drive?

Edit: I think it installs and sets itself up. But nothing coms up on the start screen, no icons or such. I may investigate further tomorrow....

I haven't done a Fedora in a while, but most of them follow the same pattern. It's pretty guided as long as everything works, but if it's not working there are a couple of things you can try. The most likely scenarios are that you just haven't waited long enough (it can take quite a while to identify the hardware on some machines), or the boot disk is having trouble with one of your components. If it's #2, there are some things you can try. Before it goes to graphical mode, look for text descriptions of function keys. Usually, they will tell you things you can type (or maybe pick from a menu) to turn off some options. Look for options like failsafe, text-mode or no-graphic, or noACPI. This should improve the odds that you can get the OS going.

What's the hardware you're trying to install on? Is it anything odd that might not be supported very well?

I'm installing it on a Dell XPS M1530.

A quick glance at Dell's website tells me there's nothing too strange in that machine, although it is laptop; and laptops can be tricky. The most likely culprit is probably the video card driver, but it should only be problem during installation. There are two video card drivers available for nvidia graphics cards: an open source one and a binary provided by nvidia. The one from nvidia is a lot more reliable, but it's licensing terms keep most installation media from shipping with it. Once the system is up it's fairly easy to load the binary; you just have to do the installation with a generic driver or in text mode. Try the keywords I mentioned earlier, and also see if there is a vesa or vesafb option.

Once you get it installed you should break out the console and type

Code:
sudo rm -rf /
And then type in your password.

[hr]

Don't do that. It's a common troll, so now you know, if you didn't already.

If its a video issue you could try using an external monitor via VGA, that is about as basic as it gets.

For partitioning you'll want to use the classic fdisk program.
