Default Which of these selections would you choose?

Hello.

I've got a choice between these laptops and modems, I'm looking for something that'll play games to a decent standard (pre-2008 probably) and be suitable for school (small & portable). If you could give me your reccomendations I'll take them into consideration when I'm choosing.

Thanks,

-Lord of the Pit

EDIT: Sorry, missed the link. I've chosen one though, so this can be locked, if you please.

If you want to play games, it'd be cheaper to build your own laptop.

I've heard it's frustrating the first time, but the ability to build your own computer is a godsend as you can replace parts at will as hardware upgrades, and you can save a lot of cash.

Having said that, it's not something you'd take on lightly. It'd be well worth your time looking up the internet for guides as well as online retailers.

I'm goig to try it out this summer. ;D

If you've got the time and patience, I suggest a homebuilt desktop and a netbook. Much cheaper.

Build your own laptop? Do not advise it. Unless you are good at computers as it is, i seriously would say give it a miss for now. Perhaps in a couple of years.

Your limited in what you can get, parts are not as universal as they are with desktops, and it would just be overall much more difficult.

Building your own laptop is not cheaper than buying a new one. Laptop parts are typically not geared torward the home builder, so you really have to know what you're doing, and selection on parts is definitely subpar. Typically also expensive.

Netbooks are great, but they are weak on graphics. You might be best off with an acer laptop. Not my preferred brand, but they're decent for relatively small, decentish lappys.

Build you're own laptop? I've never seen any parts here in Australia. I think even in the US it's fairly rare to find DIY Laptop kits. Otherwise in general, laptop parts are designed to fit into a particular enclosure - so there's no standard of motherboard sizes/layouts etc.

I would lean towards buying a cheap laptop with a good CPU spec - and then I the first thing I do is upgrade the RAM and HDD myself. In theory you could also upgrade the CPU if you could obtain one through suppliers, as they're usually accessible too.

A good self-assembled desktop for main use and a netbook I'd agree on.

Sadly for your dilemna there's are no easy choices. Portability and Functionality are inversely proportional.

Build your own desktop (or pick and let a more skilled IT tech build it for you) you can shave as much as 40% (compared to branded, HP ,Dell) in cost for a powerful build, then for your school needs just buy any Blue, low end Asus (eeepc), NEO brands around USD 200-250.
