Alright; I have a 100gb hard drive that actually has 99.2 gb of space. I have been running with about 30gb open lately. Today I decided to clean it up and delete about 5gb of stuff I didn't need, giving me about 36gb open. I come back a while later; and its suddenly down to 30gb again (although I suppose I could just be remembering wrong).
After deleting more crap, I decide that I'll see where all this usage is coming from. From the root, the major use of hard drive space (more than a few hundred MB) is as follows, based on "Properties" Windows Folder: Size: 10.5 Size on Disk: 10.6 Users: 24.2, 16 Program Files: 14.1, 14.2 You can total that up and some other junk on there and get 49 gb used, 41.17 on disk. Now on the "Computer" menu, its telling me I've used 60 gigabytes! What the hell? I've run this nice Java disk use analyzer, and it's told me I'm only using 54 gigs, even though it includes page files and everything else that wasn't in my manual survey. Somewhere, somehow, 6 gigs is being stolen :shifty: I also noticed Window's Disk Use thing likes to jump around a whole lot... in 5 minutes of doing pretty much nothing it decided I was using 60 gb, then 60.2, then 58.8, then 59.5, then 60 again. Edit: Now I've used Vista's tools to celan up a whole bunch of stuff... and guess what? Now the Comptuer says that 47.3 gigs are used, whereas the Java program says its 51.6. Again, What the hell?

As far as I can tell, Vista is set to defrag in the background in during idle periods. It may be that your OS is trying to reorganise everything in the background and as such is reporting false amounts (as if it was in the process of moving a large file to another location, it may not report the file as there, until after the move...

No, I tweaked my vista when I got it, got rid of all of the automatic things.
OT: Has the disk space stabilised yet or is still going up and down like a hoe's panties or a demented yo-yo? |
