Chaos Deamons as their own army? What does this mean?

There are basically lesser and great daemons for each god, each with the characteristics of their patron God.
Khorne: Big, angry combat monsters.
Slaanesh: Fast moving, fast hitting, fast dying.
Nurgle: Tough, slow moving, slow hitting, slow dying.
Tzeench: Shooty, and magicky, and tricksy, like Gollum in LOTR .

you pretty much hit the nail on the head there, except for the last one... that could use some work :P.

Basically Chaos Space Marines are a completely different experience than playing Chaos Daemons, for one, as you should know by now if you are at all interested in daemons :P, is that they come in differently than the other armies.

Daemons arrive Via a two wave deep strike system. while CSM's can deploy normally into fire lines, behind cover, and so on. Daemons have the gift(or curse) of deploying uniquely, the daemon codex requires you to split your forces point wise into two half's, of which you choose which you would like to come you roll to see which half comes in on turn 1 or 2 roll a 4+ I believe and the half you chose comes in, if not, the other half does,simple no? Now this may seem like a major drawback but daemons, as they are primarily combat units, can either benefit greatly from these rules, being able to get into a combat effectively on turn 2 with some of the hardest hitting combat units in the game. or fail miserably, getting shot to pieces, deep strike mishap, scattering too far away to be effective, basically all the problems that come along with deep striking.

Now as for a comparison between forces of the CSM dex and the CD dex, well, yes there similar, for one khorne means you'll still destroy things in a combat, nurgle, just never die, slaanese, strike hard and fast, and tzeentch, fight with sorcery and ranged weapons.

Do Chaos Daemons even have ranged weapons?
Yes, Chaos Daemons do have ranged weapons, however they are very limited so it is advised that you use the units wisely. Daemons do not have much high powered weaponry that the CSM's do, the highest strength weapon is 9 on a soul grinder(tongue upgrade I think). Chaos Daemons however has a small variety of lower end weaponry(along the stats of the bolter/flamer line) in the form of the tzeentchian daemons(flamers,horrors). Because Chaos Daemons cannot move the turn they arrive(although they can run) players running a multiple Chaos faction list(they use multiple units from different gods) will often use tzeentchian daemons to be able to soften up a target before the ensuing assault the next turn.


Well, that's my short(ish) explanation of Daemons as you requested .
