Default Recommend some 40k books

Hey everyone.
Was hoping to get some suggestions on some Warhammer 40k books. I have read a couple, but was hoping to get some recommendations on some really good ones.

Right now, I am reading through "Gaunts Ghosts." I have "The Founding" and "The Saint".
I will pick up the last Omnibus when I am done with these two.

So far, I really like these.

Was also looking for books with lots of action.
Are there any books that have a lot of action against say, Chaos, Necrons, Eldar and Tau?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Cheers,

TCG

Storm of Iron is about IG vs Chaos, good read
The Grey Knight books are supposed to be good, lots of fighting Chaos there
The Blood Ravens books (I read the Omnibus so I don't know the individual titles) has Space Marines fighting Necrons and Eldar, but it's a C.S. Goto book and is based off of the game, Dawn of War, so it's generally disregarded
Horus Heresy is supposed to be great, haven't read it though

I've read a few of them borrowed. One of my favorites is a collection of short stories by lots of different authors, called 'Let the Galaxy Burn'. There's some really neat selection of all kinds of different races and organizations, it isn't only centered on one point of view like most of the full length novels are.

Another series of novels that I found really fun to read are the Ciaphas Cain books. He is a Commissar who is secretly a conniving coward, who accidentally becomes decorated as a hero in situation after situation due to random serendipitous circumstances while actually just trying to save his own skin. (think "oops... um yeah I meant too do that... that's how I foiled the badguys plot... um... I think...") The character is the most interesting and amusing personality in all of the GW books IMO. Most of their characters are boring action-hero types with no personality other than being badass. Cain has style.

Let the Galaxy Burn does kick ass, I just don't generally recommend it when people are looking for books because generally people want novels

Storm of Iron - Siege War
Farseer - The weird weird ways of the Eldar
Damocles series - Awesome look at the Tau and first contact, even if the space battles are a little skewy
Deamon World - Arguleon Veq is in it, and he is one of the coolest, and least known cahracters in the game.

Personally I'd recomend the Ciaphus Cain books by Sandy Mitchell and "Brothers of the Snake" by Dan Abnett

Can't beat a classic... 'Fire Warrior' is a nice little read.

Definitely the 'Sandy Mitchell', 'Commissar Cain' books.

You've hit on a winner with the Gaunt series - absolutely top notch 40K action with great writing. They are almost exclusively concerned with fighting against Chaos.

I strongly recommend all of Heresy series, but the first three at a minimum. They are phenomenal. The Commissar Cain books are good Guard reads and portray various enemies of the Imperium (Orks, Nids, Chaos).

I have ~75 40K novels..there are too many good ones!

Wow. I didn't know so many people were on the same page as me. It seems that the Ciaphas Cain books are getting a pretty unanimous thumbs up.

I liked Gaunts Ghosts too just for its Guardiness, but all the characters are kind of corny and one sided IMO. Good stories, plots, just very one-sided characters, which is what I dislike most about BL books, and seems to plague many of them.

What are you?
I'm the fairly silent curmudgeony scout guy
oh okay

What are you?
I'm the stern leader guy who cares about my men though... (wow! dual sided personality!)
oh okay

What are you?
I'm the big dumb guy with the big dumb gun guy
oh okay

and so on... cardboard. Gimme Cain over Gaunt any day. So much more fun.

Anything by:
- Dan Abnett
- Sandy Mitchell
- Gav Thrope
- William Kings

Do not ever read anything written by:
- C.S. Goto
- Ben Counter

If by books, I recommend:
- Gaunt's Ghosts (by Dan Abnett)
- Ciaphas Cain (by Sandy Mitchell)
- Ragnar Blackmane (by William Kings)
- Last Chancers (by Gav Thrope)

You do not touch:
- Grey Knights (by Ben Counter)
- Soul Drinkers (by Ben Counter)
- Dawn of War (by C.S. Goto)
- Deathwatch (by C.S. Goto)
