Default Which book?

Have been thinking i'd like to read some of the 40k and fantasy novels, having not read any before.

The soul drinker omnibus is 6.99 atm, but i've heard it's not that great (esp fluff wise?) what do you guys think?

Any other reccommendations?

Well I thought it was good! :P It's certainly different from many other space marine books I've read, IMO, I'd get it.

Anything by Dan Abnett. Gaunt's Ghosts, Ravenor etc.

Einsenhorn. Get the Omnibus.
But seriously, a Guardsman, I'm willing to bet, could a) outshoot me, b) give me the beating of my life, and c) shove more squad-based tactics down my throat than I'd ever care to digest. Guard are hard, hard men. Whether or not GW's inconsistent, Marine-worshipping fluff keeps with that, mkay?

I enjoyed the Soul Drinkers Omnibus, but not enough to read it over. Its good inspiration if you want to do a non-chaos renegade marine chapter.

I agree, really you can't go wrong with Abnett or Eisenhorn. I have probably read it 4 times already. There are some parts that you have to push through, but it is an excellent read. The Ravenor series (Ravenor, Returned and Rogue) is also a good set and if you like the characters in Eisenhorn, some of them make reappearances.

On the lighter side of the 40k Universe, you might want to read the Ciaphas Cain series by Sandy Mitchel (IIRC). It is an entertaining set of books that focus on a cowardly, manipulative Commisar trying to save his own skin and coming out the hero of the hour.

Recently finished Scourge the Heretic and I thought that it was a decent book. Really can't tell you much about it (head colds hamper retention), other than it really just deals with the Inquisition. Its not as good as the Eisenhorn or Ravenor series, the guy just seems too friendly, from what I remember, to be an Inquisitor.

For 40k you just cant go wrong with abnett (got the full Gaunts Ghosts series my self)

Now if you want fantasy Id say Grotek & Felix (though there might be other good ones these are the only things I have myself so Ill hold off on recomending other books)
But Isn't it funny to think that guard might be able to copy eldar tactics slightly?
You mean "Perform Eldar tactics better than Eldar", right? :P
Not unless the Eldar have an obscure Warrior Aspect that revolves around the complete mastery of the common light bulb.

Depends what you're looking for honestly.

IMO, I think each series as its better qualities though I tend to agree that Dan Abnett is on my preferred reading list.

Space Wolves was ok. Only found myself reading the series twice.
Soul Drinkers I've only read once.
I like the Eisenhorn series. I've read that a couple of times.
Gaunts Ghosts I've read about 4-5 times.
Right now I'm in the middle of the Horus Heresy reading the decline of the greats.
I HEAR the Ultramarine omnibus is pretty decent as well.

I only covered the Omnimbusii because I like reading ENTIRE story arcs though I will say to get a someone decent taste of Chaos I did like was Lord of the Night.

Brothers of the snake is brilliant, but most of Abnett's work is amazing. If you can't decide where to start though, that's a great book. Other good ones include;

The Horus Heresy series - start at the beginning with Horus Rising.
The Malus Darkblade series - good fantasy stuff
Storm of Iron
Eisenhorn Omnibus - some of the best material I've ever read
Angels of Darkness
Dark Apostle
Dark Acolyte

I'm sure there's some other good books, but those are my favourites. The Ultramarines/Space Wolf/Blood Angels books all seemed pretty dull to me. In some places there was very little, if any, real plot and at other points the author tries to make things dramatic and creepy by completely overdoing doing things. Kind of like an 80s movie.

Ultramarines Series- Wouldn't recommend it unless your a die hard Ultras fan.

Blood Angels Series- Wouldn't recommend it in any way.

Soul Drinkers Series- Wouldn't recommend it, horrible fluff, not very well written.

Space Wolf Series- Not very good fluff but really gets across the feel of the Space Wolves, I particularly recommend the books Space Wolf and Grey Hunter.

Gaunt's Ghosts Series- As Abnett's work it's pretty good though I liked the first two Omnibus' much better than the later books.

Horus Heresy Series- The first four books in the series are great, some of the later ones not so much but still interresting.

Eisenhorn Series- Eh so so, couldn't really make myself get through it.

Ravenor Series- A bit easier of a read than the Eisenhorn novels for some reason, not entirely sure why.

Then there are lots of individual novels and what not that are very good, plenty that aren't so good.

ok thanks guys

I went a bit mad on waterstones.com in the end, on the way to me is:

The first Gaunts ghosts omnibus
The soul drinkers omnibus
Brothers of the snake.

they were all reduced, so I accidently bought them :shifty:
Gotta love how easy it is to do that on the interwebs..

Excellent choice I use Waterstones sometimes, they have some Warhammer 40k (and fantasy) books which aren't out in the GW shop yet.
