Default The Squats

I think that BL should have somebody write a novel of the Squat's downfall by the Tyranids. It'd make an interesting read I guess...

It'd be a cookbook....

Or maybe a trilogy...

I actually think that would make a really good book series. I'd read it in an instant.

lol, thanks, Deraj, I think I may just get at it. :P

And yeah, it's the one thing that's so big, and GW considers it canon, so why the Klkn haven't they written about the genocide of this entire race.

Yes, I shall do it.

"So what happened to them? We gotta give a reason..."

"Uuuhm... the tyranids just came out, right?"

"Yeah..."

"Let's just say they ate em all, heh..."

"Yeah, heheh..."

Two decades later...

"What ever happened to the squats?"

"What the ****'s a squat?"

Their reason is crap. How did a Tyranid fleet, who have only really been active in the eastern fringe, manage to completely wipe out a powerful, space-faring race that lived near the center of the galaxy?

Real men fight in tanks!

If Gotrek were in 40k, they wouldn't even have entered the galaxy. ;D

Well, the Tyrnid is just a short-hand excuse. It probably would have been better had GW decided to make a clean cut-off and describe the old 40K stuff as a different universe or different multiverse that might have some of the same characters and events, but I guess that idea doesn't appeal to certain segments of the market.

All Squats really were was Dwarves in Space and they weren't very popular. All of the original WarHammer 40K armies were effectively just that-- take a WarHammer army and give them sci-fi armor and guns. Fantasy battle in space.

However, at a certain point (starting with the Tyrnid, I suppose) GW decided it would be better if 40K focused on doing sci-fi-based armies instead of fantasy armies in space.

Space Elves could be carried on because the idea of an ancient civilization of super high tech anthromorphic people was well established in the sci-fi genre. Vulcans, Romulans, Twi'lek, etc. So the Space Elves were twisted a bit more towards that end and kept.

Space Orks worked because so many sci-fi stories have barbaric, super strong grunt species-- klingons, gammoreans, those guys from 5th Element... they work.

But Space Dwarves just didn't really... fit. Anything they could do was pretty much already integrated into the idea of post-apocalyptic humans anyway.

Furthermore, Space Dwarves made sense when the base Imperium army was well... human. The original Imperium was primarily human, but also regularly used Beastmen and other alien species that the Imperium had conqueered and integrated into their society much like the Romans did with the Barbarians.

But once GW put out an of cold-blooded, heartless, hate-filled, mindless, soulless, war-mongering, genecidal, asshole superhuman zombies who make the most extreme Nazi Deathcamp guard look like a tolerant, peace-loving hippie... well then, Imperium even having people who could be remotely described in modern society as 'human' was turned into a small footnote and thus the idea of them ever making alliances, much less embracing nonhumans as part of the Imperium was also thrown out.

And once that army exist and dominated the game to such a degree that it was rare to see any other army, something that has been supported by the fact that this super army was cheaper to buy, easier to paint and had the rules slanted so far towards them that playing any other army is akin to GMing for a player you expect to slaughter all the 'monsters' you use without dying and that's before you even get the super-broken rulesset simply for painting them red, gray, green, black, gray, etc., well then... there wasn't even a mechanical niche for the Space Dwarves. They'd just be a weaker version of that army even more so than the Imperial Guard.

I always thought it was the Adeptus Mechanicus who killed them off, stole their STC's and erased the evidence.

Maybe it was an template construct for an engine that runs off of beer, or a power armor for small children
