Default 40k Books?

Basically, I enjoy reading fantasy-fiction books quite a lot but have never read a single Warhammer related book.

I was wondering, what books would you people recommend? I'd preferably read books related to Space Marines but other suggestions will be noticed as well.
Any book that would update my lack of knowledge on Space Marine fluff would also be appreciated .

I haven't read to many of the Black library books, but a few that were great(well i thought they were) would be the ultramarines and soul drinkers omnibus's. the gray knights series, and the first three of the Horus heresy novels( didn't care to much for the rest) or if you just want a short read fifteen hours is very very good, but its an imperial guard book.

Wait wait wait wait.....the Soul Drinker Omnibus is quite bad as its fluff does that go parallel as others. Ultramarines is fine and Horus Heresy Books are fantastic from what I've heard.

There's one on Blood Angels; Sanguine if I'm not mistaken.

Here's a link to the Black Library's Online Store, there you can see some books and maybe purchase a book or two.

For Space Marine books I'd recommend:

Ultramarines (All four books)
Blood Angels (All three books)
Brothers Of The Snake.
Space Wolves Omnibus (All six books) Oops instead of four, I mean six books. :P
Grey Knights (All three books)
Angles Of Darkness.
Soul Drinkers.
Horus Heresy Books.

For Imperial Guard books, I'd say get those written by the author named Dan Abnett, he's done Gaunt's Ghosts which is a superb collection of books, and great stories.

That's one of three Blood Angles Books, the newest one that came out was Red Fury.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone read Angels of Darkness by Gav Thorpe? I just checked out the free sample on the black library page and found it terrible but I really want to find out more about Dark Angels. Does the book get any better? Is there a book about dark angels written by someone with talent?

Didn't expect so many replies!
Thanks .
That's very helpful so as soon as I get some money I'll probably purchase the Eisenhorn Trilogy as it's meant to be very good.
