Fifteen Hours.....

Well i got this at Christmas and finished it within days and, astounding! This book gives a real insight into what these brave courageous and rather unfortunate soldiers of the imperium are faced with.

If you want to gain a greater knowledge of what the Guard is like i would recommend buying this book.

Have you got it? What did you think?

I liked it, although it's a bit depressing. It was kinda funny too. Although, if it's an inside look at the Guard you want, Gaunt's Ghosts are your best bet.

I loved this book. It has actually started me writing scifi again. I'm going to write my own IG novel, though alot less depressing.

I think it should be essential reading for ANY IG player, and recommended for anyone. If anything more so than gaunts ghosts, because they give too much of the glory and nnot enough of the harsh realities. In most IG armies, the troops dont like or respect their officers, and there are stupid mistakes that cause serious death to guardmen. I found it a quick read, but well worth it

And how did you draw this conclusion? An field officer usually earns his rank.

do they?

I thought they got their rank by getting noticed by the higher ranking officers. If you do something stupidly brave in the middle of a combat situation, and get out alive with something useful (captured enemy officer, important information etc), the officers may well promote you when theres an open position. They may still be an awful officer, who gets their men killed with stupid orders. And also, in many historical or fantastical armies, the officers were nobles, who didnt have a clue about fighting (if you've read some of the novels by terry pratchett, there's some good examples there), and whose reason for leadership is

"having enough money to pay for a thousand funny hats"

You usually get noticed by performing some brilliant tactical manouver or displaying strategic skills. Yes, some bad apples do indeed fall through the cracks, but this is most certainly in the minority.

Re: Fifteen Hours.....

this book was probably the most realistic book in the 40K series, in Gaunt Ghosts, dan abnett has a hard time killin off his characters, especially in his last book traitor general....that was a VERY disapointing book, was nothing like his others....it was so...different and odd

Re: Fifteen Hours.....

the newest gaunts ghosts book is easily the most realistic(in my opinion), as it has a mega huge battle in it in which thousands die
