Default [BM] Tau vs Tyranids 1000 pts w/pics and fluff. BM expansion 26/05/10

Once more I have been involved in a battle and another race has entered for the summer campaign we will be running in some months time.

This battle though was quick, over very fast as the dice seemed to favour the new commers.

This does however mean I can still think up the fluff. So to make it easy I split it up. If you only want to read the report then the spoilers. If you like fluff then feel free to read it all.

#1 These are the new commers, and we did not want them to be the all to boring blinded devourers with nothing more in mind. So its an intro of whats to come and leaves many ways in which to develop the hive so, C&C realy apreciated on your first thoughts as I have no idea if stories have been done for Tyranids before.

#2 As per useual I have brought in the Tau and my commander to make an intro to the fight. This is adding more character to both the good guy and who in previous reports is like his worst enemy.

#3 The report. Due to the 20000 character limit the report is in the second post. It is short so if you hate short battles then I will save you the time and tell you not to read on. C&C welcome once more.

#4 No need for a spoiler as you know when you've come to the end of the report so finaly there is the after action fluff.

Hope you enjoy,
RB.
[box]Deep within the planet Vare...

A dark nightly glow of blue iradiated from a rapid growing fungus that scaled the walls.

The iced layers of the planet were slowly retreating and in their wake a mist would stay with the cool air that remained.

Within this mist creatures scuttled unseen and unheard.

It was in the deepest of the chambers and tunnels that life could truly be known.

A mutilated creautre lay to the floor. She was large and to stand she would dwarf any human. However, her wounds prevented such action of even standing.

The mist flowed into the chamber stretching out with limb like entities. The strands of vapour settled on the beast to give it a warmth of deathly cold, but still this was warmer than the cavern itself.

From digestion pools ambilical cords had grown, attached to the reck of a body. Energy was forced into the deathly shell. There was no finese, no glory or dignity. It was like a small child trying to feed her mushed up rations into the sealed mouth of a rag doll.

The limbs of the fog worked their way over the body, masaging the limbs to force the flow of fluids inside. Entering the mouth and struggling down to the sac like lungs. Forcing the bags apart to drag yet more air into the body.

Liquids began to flow within the beast once more and the organs struggled to life. At first to sustain themselves, but with time they began to work together once more and the beast awoke.

I feel you my queen. You must feed on this galaxy.

The creature felt scratching within her mind. It was a voice she recognised but it was still a voice changed beyond recognition.

I know you. What has come of 'The Minds' for I can not hear them?

We are the last. We all felt you die. Time has come and gone in your absance.

I feel the presance of change. Where are 'The Minds'.

We are the last. Your return thought not to happen. We must feed.

I will gather strength. I have already tasted the strains of this planet. The aeons past can be tasted. Still I feel the presance of new strains yet to taste.

I beg of you. Where are 'The Minds'?

We are the last. 'The Minds' are gone. You were not to return. An impossibility now reality. You are Dead, Death, a Ghost.

'The Minds' lost. We were the last. We fed to grow. We feed to grow. We must grow. Grow or be lost.

Many creatures stepped from the mist. She could feel the synapse and together they blocked out the voice. One came forward, [i]"My Queen Shi, do you remember? You are Furai-Shi for the time has been long. Do you remember me?"

"Senshi. Of course. My body will lay in tatters but my mind is here. Tell me what has happend and why do you block 'The Minds'?"

"We must my queen, until you understand. I will show you my mind and you will understand."

We awoke first and have since brought our minds together. What happend to us is still the puzzel we work with. We have shared minds with 'The Minds' but it is not as we felt once before. 'The Minds' are gone Furai-Shi. What remains is a might 'The Minds' would favour. They have no thought or presance. There is a single 'Mind' that hides. It is the last but it is not of what 'The Minds' once were. To survive it had to feed, and 'to feed' has taken it. All it now wants is to feed. The ways of aeons past are gone.

"Senshi, I will find the truth of this 'Mind'. Now we must feed to grow. Above us rests familiar strains to feed on. Take these strains and new strains will come."[/box]
[box]The sun was just breaking the horizon, silhouettes of mountain peaks is all that brought an end to the night. In shadows was glimmers of movement. Suits moving silently. Three-toed metal bases moving the weight forward and silently shattering the frozen grass blades beneath.

Four XV8 suits crept out of the iced forests. Just days ago this place had been teaming with the blue suited Gue invaders and now they had simply disappeared. Small teams had been called to volunteer for scouting missions to work along side XV15 and XV25 teams as the area was so great. Seeing an easy mission to satisfy his superiors Shas’el Sa’cea volunteered for the mission, taking with him a small team of suited Shas'ui.

Stood at the edge of the forest they looked upon a camp. It was as if ghosts had slept and left. Everything one would need to make basic camp but not a sign of life to be seen or heard.

Sa’cea cycled his optical sensors but still not a life sign registered. They cautiously edged forward towards the camp. Smoking blast craters showed signs of combat scattered around the camp perimeter. As he took another step he halted when a hiss came from beneath his foot.

At that moment the sun flooded the valley. The black skin of the mountains opening up to reveal lush green flora and frost bitten gullies. Before the hiss subsided the light set its touch to the opposing side of the camp. In unison creatures looked up from feeding, the chitin plates clashing to end the peace. Two large beasts reared up to let out a roar and with their call a mighty lizard burst from the ground. Smaller cousins slithering out through its tunnel.

Ready to lead he called over his com, "All scouting parties, the threat has been identified. Y'he! Prepare defences." Sa'cea lowered his weapon on the lone beast beneath his foot. The barrels spun and rapid pulse fire turned the creature to an unrecognisable goo.

Knowing the forest behind was to dense to make a fast enough retreat Sa'cea ordered, "All available units in the area. Give assistance."

...but only static replied...

The horde began to make its way into the camp but still only static came to the Shas.

He then went on to declare, "I am respected by the Aun above any other Shas on this forsaken rock. My death will not go unpunished!"

...once more static was all that spoke to him...

Sa'cea sent a triangulation signal to pinpoint the other scouting parties. Not one signal returned meaning they were either to far away or, and with a sinking feeling, more likely to have fallen to the Y'he presence already.

The horde had gathered pace. Charging towards them. Already half way across the base.

With a slower and softer tone, emotion revealing the doom he felt; "I beg of anyone near my location. For the strength of numbers in the empire. If not for glory then for the Tau'va." A stuttered choke followed as his throat ran dry. His fellow shas were also calling cries for support. Their training against the Y'he was only of text and vids. Sa'cea continued his plea, "I fear the death that the Y'he bring ... ... ... a reply is all I ask to hear." He remembered about his training and the battles he had seen through his time. He thought silently to himself, Are these Y'he so powerful that the planet is lost already? ARE WE ALONE?

The hordes numbers had swelled at this point and strided across the entire camps width.

Sa'cea and the accompanying suits unleashed a torrent of un-aimed fire at their lines, feeling an ever rising fear that gave no accuracy to their shots.

A voice came over the comms. A familiar one that brought relief and doubt to Sa'cea. The voice spoke with hatred and honour, "For such a time you have watched me. Looking for the doubt of the Tau'va. Doubt that evades me still. You brought a stain upon my name. A stain upon the sept of Vare. It was you and your Aun that had my brothers and sisters scrutinised and dishonoured. Now this 'Vare Scum' of your creation is all that hears your pleas. For the TAU'VA!"

As the comms cut out three redesigned Kass'l flew up from behind the forest. Above the four suits they held their place and from one Shas'O Va're'x dropped out with his teams of warriors. The other two deployed a gunship each before the escort class ships sent a volley of fire at the horde, coaxing hidden winged beasts to jump up from the masses and take flight. As the creatures flew off to hunt the shuttles the horde was on the toes of the compact force before any more could be said.

"FORM UP!" yelled Va're'x and together a gunline was in place.

The Y'he began their charge...[/box]

Default Re: [Bat Rep] Tau vs Tyranids 1000 pts w/pics and fluff. BM expansion 26/05/10

From the Battle Missions Expansion
Objective: Infestation
This is a Tyranid mission from the Battle Missions book. I first rolled to see if the mission was 'nids or Tau by rolling a dice. Then rolled again to get one of the three mission. The objective is kill points.
Special Rules:
The mission states that the defenders are veteran tyranid fighters. As such all Tau none vehicle units gain +1 to their WS.
The Tyranids special rule was due to them being in familiar surroundings. As such all Tyranids gain +1 to all their cover saves. So a 5+ save from a crater becomes a 4+ save.
Points Limit: 1000
Turns: 5
Battlefield:
So we thought ahead of the fluff to be as a sort of ghost camp. (i realy need to make some cheap carboard buildings!!!) The craters around showed signs of combat.

Deployment:
Tau:
I chose my list with the fluff in mind so I know it was not to be the best set up. I still expected it to perform fairly better than what actualy happend.

HQ Units:
Shas’O Vare:
Cyclic Ion Blaster
Fusion Blaster
Hard-Wired Multi Tracker
Iridium Armour
Stimulant Injector
Drone Controller with 2 Shield Drones
So heres Va're'x, kitted out as per useual. Kept the CIB for lots of fire and fusion blaster to take on the heavies.

Shas’el Sa’cea:
Airbursting Frag Projector
Burst Cannon
Hard-Wired Multi Tracker
Targeting Array
My recently painted suits got knocked off the painting table and ended up in more bits than how they came packaged. So I cooked the lizard and proxied Sa'cea with a broadside.

ELITE Units:
XV8 Crisis Suit
Twin-Linked Burst Cannon
Targeting Array

XV8 Crisis Suit
Twin-Linked Burst Cannon
Targeting Array

XV8 Crisis Suit
Twin-Linked Burst Cannon
Targeting Array
Sa'cea and the suits are kitted for lots of fire while not taking up to many points.

TROOP Units:
Fire Warriors x 12
Shas’ui
Bonded

Fire Warriors x 12
Had to lose the bonding in order to get a few extra points.

HEAVY Units:
Hammerhead Gunship
Targeting Array
Railgun
Two Burst Cannons
Multi Tracker
Target Lock

Hammerhead Gunship
Targeting Array
Railgun
Two Burst Cannons
Multi Tracker
Target Lock
Warriors and Railheads are self explanatory.

So it is the Tau that have to deploy first, but we must roll to see who picks what corner the Tau start in. I win and so I pick the corner that gives the 'nids less cover when charging. Why am I stuck in a corner??? Its the game rules. So all units deploy where they can as far back as possible. From this moment I felt bad about this as the bonus cover save they get is a huge advantage and my +1 WS dosn't help me at all.

Tyranids:
So we had what 'nid models were available. Then added upgades to make to 1k mark in points. The list was as follows...

HQ UNITS:
Tyranid Prime
Rending Claws
Scything Talons
Regeneration

Tyranid Prime
Rending Claws
Scything Talons
Regeneration

ELITE UNITS:
Zonethrope
Claws and Teeth
Warp Field

TROOP UNITS:
Genestealer Brood x 9
Scything Talons
Brood lord
Implant Attack
Acid Blood

Hormagaunt Brood x 11
Scything Talons
Toxin Sacs

Hormagaunt Brood x 10
Scything Talons
Toxin Sacs

FAST ATTACK:
Ravener Brood x 3
Scything Talons
Rending Claws

HEAVY SUPPORT:
Trygon Prime
Regeneration
TOTAL 998

With the Tau in one corner it means the 'nids deploy anywhere else on the table, more than 12" from the Tau's table corner. This was an advantage for the 'nids as the battle table is just short of being 4ft wide meaning the Tau are closer to the center line than they would have liked. After all, I think every gamer knows the value of just 6 more inches, right? The nids deployed ready to surround the Tau and be as close as possible to the Tau. Keeping in mind of the pie plates Tau can dish out so the Trygon and raveners move slightly further away. I guess the trygons a fire magnet and the raveners have the speed.
All set up the Tau roll for stealing the Initiative of the first turn but failed. Another advantage the 'nids now get.

TURN 1
Tyranids:
Set up surounding the food enemy all units moved forward towards the Tau. Nothing more on their minds other than getting into Close Combat.

In the shooting phase the Zoanthrope goes for a pyschic blast attack but scatters and misses everything.
The Trygon unleashes its containment spines on the team of warriors along the long table edge. 25% casulties caused.
Everything else makes a run move.

The Hourmies and Genestealers charge on the 2nd Fire Warrior team. The Broodlord swiftly kills 3 of the warriors and the rest of the 'stealers take out the rest, consolidating deeping into Tau lines.

With nothing more to be done the 1st Fire Warrior team rolls for a morale test after taking casulties. This happend to be the group without the Team Leader. The roll failed by 1 point. Could there be any greater kick in the nuts for thinking "I'll be ok without a Shas'ui and bonding knife". So close to the edge it was obvious they would make a run for it.

Kill Points:
Tau - 0
Tyranids - 2

Tau:
There was no movement as there was no where to move to.

The three XV8's let lose with the burst cannons. All aimed at the genestealers and killing 6 of them.
Sa'cea shot at the hormagaunts, missing and failing to wound with the burst cannon. The AFP scatters. He still manages to hit and kill 1 Hormagaunt but the hit on the right Warrior Prime failes to wound.
With all of Va're'xes shots he only manages one wound on the left Warrior Prime.
Red Railhead uses his SMS to kill another two of the hormagaunts and then pieplates them, but he scatters only killing one more and also wounding the white XV8.
The Black Railhead does likewise at the genestealers. His SMS also kills to of the stealers and again scatters. This time though he scatters over the hormagaunts killing 6.

With shooting over the suits retreat to cover the two commanders.

The units of hormagaunts and 'stealers both had one man remaining and were in synapse range to get fearless. I realy could have done with more luck, especialy on the scatter rolls.

Kill Points:
Tau - 0
Tyranids - 2
TURN 2
Tyranids:
All units move forward again.

Zoanthrope fails to hit with his warp powers once more. So does the Trygon Prime fail to wound the closest black suit with all his shots.
Everything else runs forward and if it can charges into the line.

The Broodlord, all by himself, slips through the XV8 line and charges Va're'x. He attempts to use Hypnotic Gaze on the commander but fails the leadership test. he then fails to wound the Shas'O. In return Va're'x, with his useual CC luck and the +1 WS bonus, kills the Broodlord.
The raveners charge on the flanking black XV8. They only cause one wound, the suit replies with none, and the raveners claim another Kill Point in a sweeping advance.
The right Warrior Prime charges the white XV8 and takes the last wound from him as the other Prime charges on the center XV8 with the full squad of hormagaunts. The Prime is all that is needed take both wounds away.

Kill Points:
Tau - 1
Tyranids - 5

Tau:
So all this in front of me. The zoanthrope still alive and sure to get lucky soon. The Trygon Prime now within distance of shooting and charging. I decided I didn't want to have the difficulty of bringing two commanders back from the dead using fluff, I mean its Tyranids. They wont leave the dead behind unscaved. With no sight of victory or even a draw possible I conceeded the match and my Tau withdrew.
Thoughts:
I knew it would be hard but my god they came fast and hit faster. So much CC that I could have nightmares. However, I take the loss proudly and full of excuses. My list was not the best for taking on the 'nids. The scenario we got stuck with definatley was not in my favor, leaving no room to manouver or spread my troops. Maybe if I had the first turn things would have been different. Finaly, its 4th edition Tau vs 5th edition 'nids, thats sounds like a good excuse to pass it off lol. Anyway, was fun and interesting to play.

Now back to my favorite bit, THE FLUFF!

[box]The wave of beasts shrugged off the mass fire, unfaultered by the blasts from gunships and missiles. Many of the smaller beasts lay torn to shreds, a massacre of Y'he bodies. From the fallen more came, behind the meat shield charged larger monstrosities. A horde of scythes and claws crashed down onto the protecting XV8s. It was only moments the brave souls tried to fight back before they were torn to pieces. From the slumped bodies of Tau and Y'he leaped a Broodlord. A pounce onto Va're'x. Its eyes sunk deep through the optics of the commanders suit. Trapped in a gaze the claws ripped chunks of armour away. Snapping to realisation he forces the Y'he lord back and comes down on it with his Iridium Shield. With a moments thought he remembered that as ferocious the Y'he are they can be very soft and easily killed.

The sound of rapid pulse fire echoed once more. This time not from the fighting lines. From the forest tree truncks splinterd, snapped and fried to thousands of shots as a clearing formed to falling vegataion. Devilfish poured through the breach. "Commander Vare, the Aun has orderd all teams to retreat to the colony. Y'he are here in mass!" It was then the young pilot realised what was happening before him.

"Fall back!" orderd Va're'x. This time Sa'cea did not feel like arguing any orders and swiftly set off into the forests. Va're'x held the ground with a walking retreat. His two blasters non stop firing.
"Pilots abandon the Railheads, they can't move fast enough through the rough terrain!" With the order the crews quickly left the craft behind and hurried into the Devilfish transports as the Hammerheads were swamped with Y'he. Retreating at full pace Va're'x found himself holding on to the rear hatch of one fish so the bulk of his suit could keep up. He watched behind as the horde followed them, slowly gaining distance between himself and the Y'he.
But as the Tau forces fled Va're'x only had one thought. What would come of the Warrior team that fled the field. They were all his Vare brothers but more than that, no Tau should be left behind to the fate that any Gue offers them, least of those fates is that when faced with Y'he.

As the 'fish passed a retreating convoy Va're'x released his grip. With a thundering crash his feet landed before the convoy. The force of impact forced him down onto one knee. Dust kicked up and swirled around him and he slowly began to rise. His armour was torn with chunks of metal missing, slicing claw marks scaring the suit, revealing shinning metal beneath and still wet Y'he blood trickled along the edges of his shield. Standing tall before the Tau warriors he was a warning to those that knew the signs; but these were teams of Vare warriors and suits that stood before Va're'x. They all knew what was about to be said as many of them had thanked Va're'x for his suicidal efforts...

Looking at them, and with no electronics needed as his voice traveled through the gaping holes of his suit. In a low and threatening voice, full with anger and hatred, Va're'x spoke with one though of going back, [b][i]"I need voulenteers..."[/box]

The Tau fluff you've got going on in great. I like the foreshadowing at the end of the report; I smell a rescue mission. Why do you feel the hammerheads couldn't keep up with the devilfish? Its the same chassis and they could have offered a ton of firepower to cover the retreat.

The nid fluff I'm not sold on. I think you gave them too much personality. I haven't tried to write anything from the nid perspective, since its so alien and hard to do. I expect when I do it will be descriptive only with no words spoken, like their actions are being reported by an invisible observer.

That mission was a rough one to roll up. I do like the battle missions book though, and can't wait to play through them all. I think you made one large mistake in that first round. You said there was no where to move, but I would have tank shocked everything on the right flank, and then hit them with submuntion rounds. I would have had the entire army fire on those squads on the right flank, and then had the XV8s jump between the hammerheads and the right table edge. Not sure if you could have won, but standing still was a death sentence.

I also modified the title to follow the new guildlines. There's no need to write [bat rep], we all know it is one. Keep up the good work.

Default Re: [BM] Tau vs Tyranids 1000 pts w/pics and fluff. BM expansion 26/05/10

The 'nids: For them my story is they are ancient. From a time when the 'nids themselves were not just the great devourer who feed and nothing more. There wasn't just a hive mind that controls them all but there was many minds, each with a singular emotion and the synapse brought the 'nids together so that the Hoarde was organised. I'm not saying that they were nice or going into any real depth of such a time but I think the Hoarde being led by a 'council' of sorts just makes the 'nids scarier as they are not the predictable force. By giving them a little life and character to just a few nids means I open more oportunities of fun fluff and battles.

The Battle: I considered moving my tanks off, even tank shocking. But to my understanding you cant shoot if you tank shock. Come their turns they had plenty of rending claws. Also from the first turn I wasn't expecting stealers and hormies rolling those 6's to get the charge range...that realy hurt. Finaly from Tau turn 1 the suits had nowhere in which to go that could get them out of charge range. I was planning on movement but I wasn't expecting the small 'nids to survive the shooting. I was lucky killing 10 hormies considering they got a 4+ cover save out of the crater.

Although the vehicles use the same chasis the Hammerhead would be far heavier than a Devilfish. There may be fluff out there that says Hammers would keep up by I wouldn't accept it in my own fluff. It has a huge gun and the passenger compartment is taken up with equipment to power the weapon. Although it would be fast it wouldn't be as fast or as manouverable. Well, thats how I feel about it at least.

Still glad people are reading and hopefully enjoying it also.
