Default Tau vs Chaos Marines 1000pts with pics (06/04/2010)

[box]
The Vare Colony started off with just a handful of fire warrior teams. Trained with basic knowlege on operating systems, living in swiflty constructed barracks and living out of a domed hydroponics bay. Slowly and with alot of time other Tau would come to the colony to do the tasks the local shas could not; and after seeing the beauty of the ice fields, shinning mountain peaks and snap frozen forests many tau would request a permanent station there.

The Etherals know not why such requests were made as any Etheral who saw the planet would simply see it as yet another rock that offered little to assist the empire; but if refused a request of transfer, almost all the tau would become ill with depresion. So it came that the Etherals limited the numbers that went to Vare. They erased all images of Vare from the databases on other planets as even a simple image could cause minor depression. With this now hidden planet there was only one method of communication and that was from the Etherals Chambers on Tau.

Many generations later and the vare colony was a mighty city indeed. The city had spread to cover many miles and was now surrounded by a towering wall that circled around the city limits. Within, greater hydroponic buildings were constructed allowing for more nutritional and tastier foods to be grown. Living blocks rise high with schools and health stations built within for each caste. Using the mined minerals of the planet the Vare colonists had a small modular factory that could be assigned and reworked to build equipment for any needs, including weaponry and armour. To use these weapons meant for a small training camp to be built for the shas graduates of the living blocks.

As communication was to be limited and Etherals felt no time for the simple requests of an unimportant planet, data such as births of young tau and the information on the colonies progress became spuradic and inacurate. It was with Aun'savons first visit that the city came under true scrutiny. Its population had boomed and data from other planets had been imported without permission, consisting of relaxing literature to building blue-prints. Aun'savon admited he was impressed with what they had done but that was the only positive he would report.

He was the first to discover that 'O Vare Rex' was the true identity of Commander Va're'x, known to many as Tau's Greatest Strength. Learning of the stain on the Vare name disgusted him and believed that Va're'x, a runaway from the Vare Colony, should no longer hold his rank as the title of Shas was stripped from his families name. This request was approved by a council of Etherals, but an official form from a higher Etheral denied the request. The form itself hid the Etherals name and Va're'x was never to know of what had happend. Aun'savons report continued on to release information that the colony held a contingent of warriors and gunships. Another request made and approved was for most of the contingent to be assigned off world to assisst the Empire. With grudges held these Shas left their homes and were spread throughout Tau cadres.

Having seen all he could Aun'savon left Vare leaving behind orders for a larger amount of mined minerals to be sent to other planets, brining Vare's progress to a halt. Taking with him was a taste of disgust. The tau on Vare had not hindered the empire but niether did they make the effort to help the empire. It was with Aun'savons tongue that rumors started, the Vare warriors throughout the empire were treated with disrespect and soon the word 'vare' became a disgracefull insult.

Fourteen tau'cyr later and Aun'savon was to return.
His fleet had arrived and were engaged with the Impireal Ships above the planets atmosphere. Falling from the skies came a skether'qan escorted by two kass'l. The 'messenger' ship dropped to a steady halt within the city as the orcas circled above. From the ship came teams of fire warriors, their uniforms smoothe and armour shining. Following came the Etheral himself. Stepping onto the landing pad as the vessels returned to join the combat above. In the winds that swept from the ships the Aun stood steady, his red and green robes gliding in the breeze. Looking elegant in the chaos of the gusts that twisted around him. Every tau felt his imposing glare upon them.

Aun'savon was not interested in the city this time and looked for his pet. Standing at the bottom stood El'sa'cea dressed in similar robes of reds and greens but not of such glory as the Aun. Aun'savon felt this as an insult, thinking to himself that maybe he had given this half-caste tau too many privilages. Still he needed the el' to furthur his plans and he walked down the landing ramp to meet El'se'cea.

"Greetings Aun'savon. I hope your journey was pleasant."

"It was of no interuptions Shas'el. Sa'cea, what news do you have of Commander Vare?"

"I did as asked my Aun. Vare was in a tight conflict with the Gue and maybe he could have pulled off the mission. He had however lost many of his warriors. I took this chance to destroy the objective and remind Shas'O Vare how the Tau do battle."

"And did you achieve your goal?"

"Yes my Aun. He has shown a strong hatred to anyone who uses the vare name as an insult. He confronted me but I remained calm. With the break of our talks he gave threats to end my life."

"The situation sounds well el. What is of him now?"

"I currently have the entire Vare Cadre on cleaning duties, I declared by your orders, my Aun. Further more I would add he is becomming unstable. Vare talks of a korst'la stalking him. He could become unpredictable."

"Noted El'sa'cea. You have done well. I wish for you to continue watching his cad..."

The conversation was broken by a loud snap of the air that was heard by all on the planet, leaving their ears ringing. To the south the skies changed. Above the mountains swirling clouds gathered. Red and purple light stained the clouds, the colours spreading like blood from a wound. Lighting craked and thunder roared. At the centre was darkness. An area of emptiness. A hole in the fabric of space. From the hole fell, something. As it hit the grounds beyond the horizon a thin blue streak erupted from it, shooting straight and true through the center of the clouds dark void. With moments passed, more objects began to fall, converging on the heart of the beam.

"My Aun, what is this?"

"Rumours Sa'cea. Only rumours. That light is a signal beam, a homing beacon. We must go. Bring your troops El'sa'cea, today we begin to take the steps you must climb to become a Shas'O."

"Yes my Aun."
[/box]

Objective: Capture and Control - Spearhead
The Tau need to take and disable the beacon to prevent more Chaos converging on the location.
The Chaos want to take and kill the Etheral that made the mistake of personally investigating the light.
Points Limit: 1000
Turns: 5
Battlefield:
So things were placed out to give a feel for an even match, with walls littering the field.
We placed 2 craters in the top left corner so if the winner of the roll wanted to, they could choose the bottom right corner and force the opponent to start in the difficult terrain.
As it happend I won the roll to picked to start in the top right, feeling that to be better suited and so placed my marker.
The Chaos forces start to the bottom left where the beacon is located.
Tau are to the top right where they will need to protect the etheral.
Ignore the stack of tank traps to the bottom right, i forgot to take the extra off of the table.

My tactics was to have my two broadsides and ionhead to surround my marker, still being able to shoot the far side if needed. One team of FW to defend the wall in front and shoot the oncommers. My other two teams were to go along the bottom edge and along to the objective, using the devil fish when it was safe. By that I mean destroy the predator and the Havoc Marines. My Shas'el I set up to go along the top table edge and give me a chance of surrounding my enemy.

My opponent set up with a squad in the rhino and the Obliterator in reserve ready to deepstrike.
TURN 1
Tau:
So with the chaos forces ahead I moved my two Devifish Warrior teams south. My commander strided forward and got behind a wall. Everything that could took pot shots at the enemy. With all the firing only my wall mounted fire warriors managed to kill a single member of the Havoc Marines.

[glow=yellow,5,600]Chaos:
The rhino moved forward 6 inches. The squad inside jumped out and both the squad and tank fired at the Shas'el. Between all the shots the commander took one wound. I designated the wound to him as I knew the squad had a melta gun and wanted that to be hiting my shield drones should it happen.

The predator and havocs sent las and autocannon fire at my ionhead but lady luck caused no penetration or glances.[/glow]
TURN 2
Tau:
So to the top my commander was ablt to take 3 shots at the marines, with 3 hits and so 3 dead marines. Then fell back 6 inches in the assault phase. My 2 Devilfish Teams advanced forward along the southern edge.

So now I get to shoot, first order of business my 2 broadsides shoot at the predator, the first missing but the secound manages to penetrate. The chaos general rolls for damage and it lands on a 6. Happy days for me. Next the front Devilfish shoots at the Havoc squad and wounds the Aspiring Champion with a burst of pulse fire. Once more the Warrior team on the wall shoot, aiming at the Havoc squad and putting down the Champion of the squad.

So with that my turn ends. The Havocs still had their missile launcher, autocannon and lasgun but they were slowly being picked off by the keen eyed fire warriors. My broadsides had done me proud by eliminating the Predator.

[glow=yellow,5,600]Chaos:
With the predator gone the Rhino and squad of Chaos Marines split up. The Marines headed furthur forward towards the commander, attempting to hunt him down. The Rhino draws rights to head off the advancing Fire Warriors.

The shooting phase quickly comes along with the squad of Marines causing another wound on the Shas'el. The only other order of business was the Havoc squad shooting the Gunship but failing to hit through the disruption pod.[/glow]
TURN 3
Tau:
Both teams of 'fish warriors advance along the southern edge. In an attempt to hault the advance the Devilfish flank either side of the rhino.

The shooting begins and I start with the Ionhead taking shots at the havoc squad but unable to down any of the heavy Marines. Both broadsides shoot at the Rhino but both fail to hit or get even a glancing hit. So I try with burstcannon fire from the Devilfish and the forward team of warriors, but still no glancing or penetrating hits. Finaly the warriors on the wall attempt shots on the rear of the rhino and again it takes no damage. The turn would have ended without any casulties caused if not for my commander who shot at the approaching marines to down another two.

A very poor round of firing but proceeding on my commander jumps back some more, keeping clear out of assault range from the marines.

[glow=yellow,5,600]Chaos:
My opponent has a smug look on his face, thoughout the match we had been discussing each others tactics and, after rolling for reserves his Obliterator comming in and dropping just 6 inches from my tank, he now he says "I'm declaring a tank shock towards your firewarriors." He aims, and with the unit so close to the table edge he guesses 10 inches. We measure and...hes short by half an inch. The look of a smug face soon changed players as we both laughed.

The chaos marines to the north advanced again but this time unable to hurt the shas'el and once more the Havoc Marines fail to harm the Ionhead. The only Tau casualty was one Broadside that fell to the Obliterators shooting.
TURN 4
Tau:

My rear Fire Warrior squad advances on the Obliterator to get in rapid fire range, just in case. The rear Devilfish moves to face the Rhinos rear armour while the other advances to bear its autocannon down on the chaos lord, settleing over the remains of the predator that once stood here. (A bad omen maybe???)
The obliterator is my biggest threat with weaponry that could easily put down my Ionhead at this range, and anything else. Everything faces to turn the new Chaos threat except for my shas'el who continues to fight the oncomming threat and both the Devilfish.

So tank, broadside and fire warriors on the wall all shoot at the Obliterator... 3 Ion Cannon rounds, a re-rollable railgun, 2 smart missile systems equaling 8 shots and a fire warrior team on the wall of whom some where in rapid fire range...ONLY 1 WOUND WENT UNSAVED!!!! This is where I was happy I had brought back the second Fire Warrior Team, all in rapid fire range. I had so far been seriously unlucky. 16 shots later and 1 more wound caused, JUST enough to finsih off the Obliterator!!!

Now it was to my devilfish who shot at the Rhinos rear armour but failed to damage. If not for my advancing fire warriors shooting behind them it would have remained. Lucky for me some could see the rear armour also, hits, rolls and a single penetration. Chaos general rolls again and as before a 6 lands on the board.

The other takes the chances of shooting the Chaos Lord but to no avail.

My Shas'el continues his work, reducing the Chaos marines to two men remaining.

That was a turn for the Fire Warriors, they were my saving grace. If not for them I'm sure my opponent would have got a bit of a massacre on the go afterwards.

SORRY NO PICTURES FOR THIS TURN. WE HAD A SMOKING BRAKE AND FORGOT WHEN WE RETURNED

[glow=yellow,5,600]Chaos:
The only movement was of the two chaos marines advancing forward towards the commander again, still unable to put him down and the melta not braking through the shield drones saves.

The Chaos Lord looks at the sleek tank before him, the rapid pulse fire patting against his terminator armour like simple rain drops. With a roar of horror he raises his gun, a single Melta shot unleashed. It hits and I roll as he penetrates. It was a 6. In the same place as the predator the Devilfish goes out in an explosion. So thankfully I had a larger crater plate which meant removing some Tank traps to.

This worked as a real big favor for the chaos. The unit of Chaos that has sat surrounding the beacon for the entire game now had a clear line of sight on the approaching fire warriors. With long range shots they knock out the two shield drones and kill one of the firewarriors.

Again the Havocs miss at shooting the Ionhead.[/glow]

AGAIN IM SORRY FOR NO PICS THIS TURN, ESPECIALY AS IT SEEMED TO BE THE MOST EXCITING ROUND
TURN 5
Tau:
So possibly the last turn, but with my luck of shooting I would need another 5 turns just to deal with the other squad of marines and lord. SO, shas'o shoots at the remaining two chaos marines and finishes them off. Broadside, Ionhead and the wall mounted Fire Warriors shoot at the havoc squad putting down another two and leaving just the lascannon left. The forward squad returned fire at the last chaos squad surrounding the beacon but no casulties came from it.

[glow=yellow,5,600]Chaos:
The chaos squad surrounding the beacon and the Chaos Lord shoot at the Fire Warriors killing another two. Once more the lascannon shoots the gunship but fails to penetrate.[/glow]

I let the chaos player roll to see if we get another turn, but we didn't and the game ends a draw.
GAME ENDS: DRAW
Conclusion:
Both armies control their own objective, dominating their halves of the battlefield and preventing any enemy models getting close to their own. However the Tau had the most dominating force remaining.

Battle Thoughts:
I was expecting a much harder battle on my hands. As you could see it took alot of simple shooting to take out just a single squad of Marines. I guess I should have brought my Hammerhead along the northern edge to hit the Havocs and preventing their cover save. Still I cannot complain about drawing a battle I though I would lose. My last battle I used three Monat XV8s who were great. This time was a proper attempt at utilising the Devilfish. I failed though. Thinking back now I should have had one team also go along the northern edge, but to do so would have made the game play out entireley different.

I will say that a Devilfish definatley has its uses and I did NOT have them preform to their best, but I will include a 'fish in future battles, more than likely take an SMS to assisst more.

MVP: No Chaos realy stood out in this match, just the Obliterator dropping in and melta-ing away one broadside before being owned.

My tau, the Ionhead was not that great, I needed to get rid of the lascannon threats but just did not get the kills to make a safe passage. HOWEVER, the 13 front armour was excellent...with some great dice rolls of course. I would have to give a pat on the the back to my firewarriors on the south edge. The front team took out the Rhino where all else failed and the rear team finished off the Obliterator at a crucial time.

I do not feel any unit of either army deserves any medals this time around.

As for the Tau they do have a bragging victory to take away. Although it is not what counts in this match, below are the casulties of both sides :P
This next bit is not so much story line, rather more a bit more character and life to the Vare Colony as a whole that fits with this moment of a few losses. Keep in mind im extremely tierd but cant sleep, who would have thought it, so i would love C&C on this next bit as if its liked i will encorporate it into a work in progress of my Vare Colony history.

[box]Back in the Vare Colony Aun'savon walked off into the 'Offices of Vare'. Following him was El'sa'cea, dressed in his robes as an aprentice to the Etheral. Behind them was a gathered crowd of all castes filling a meeting section of streets. The dead lay in make shift coffins. The drones and XV88 suit carried off for repairs, the pilot recovering in hospital. The Devilfish crew had survived, but crippled with mutilated and lost limbs.

The three boxes grasped the three fire warriors that fell in battle. The crowd held their silence and gave way to grief. These warriors were of the Vare colony, the squad taken from the Vare Cadre. The Etheral had ordered a "diverse mix to all cadres on the planet." but the common talk was he wanted to spread out the Vare Cadre to weaken them and make sure that Shas'O Vare Va're Rex did not become to powerful.

Rumors spread of what realy happend on the battlefield as information leaked from the Offices of Vare. Talks of Aun'savons forces holding back and sending forward the Vare troops, unsupported. How El'sa'cea took minor hits to his armour before calling the retreat, his protective shield drones still operational, another two teams of warriors under his command along with a gunship. All the Tau knew victory could have been achieved and many jokes came of the cowardly act.

The crowd came to a silence as the surviving five warriors of the Vare team walked through the crowd trailed by a devilfish running on low power, only just off the floor but producing minimal sound. One by one the five team members, all still suited in the dirt and blood spattered armour, closed up the coffins and loaded them into the 'fish. They left the crowd, heading for the fire warrior Vare Training Camp within the city. Inside was the hall of dead. A room of total darkness where the walls, floors and ceilings were all touch sensitive programs. At the center the three coffins lay closed. The team walked in, every foot step activating sensory nodes in the floor that gave off a light halo glow around their prints. Standing around the coffins the halos faded and the room fell to darkness. The floor broke and the coffins began to fall under. Scans were made of the deceased before an automated system incenerated the warriors. Once the floor returned, clean and free from ash and the room was dark once more, the walls began to give life. A single image of the dead was now present on one of the walls, each ghost having a wall to themselves. The technology made the images 3D and life like.

The five warriors turned to face one of their fellow team mates. They removed their helmets and looked soulfully upon the bonded bretheren. Taking in turns they began to recite the history of the fallen brother. Over the following few rotaa the team listed the details of each, their names, family, place of birth and extended in to reliving all the shared experiances of battle, the encounters on strange and wonderous planets, the heroics of saving lifes and showing mercy to Gue, down to the gritty nights of drinking ilegal substances in the baracks in their youth.

When they had finished the warriors left in silence, not making eye contact with anyone. Once they had left the training grounds the family of the fallen Tau entered the rooms. Again a halo lighted up the foot steps as they stood before their lost sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers. To each family their relation began to speak; but their words were filled with the voices of the five other team mates.

This was the tradition of Vare, that no warrior was ever forgotten. The emotions connected to the fallen can never be written down and so instead of a written wall of the dead, this computer bank recorded the details of every tau member by taking verbal accounts. It was those closest to the Tau that spoke of the events and as fire warriors they were normaly closest to the team they were bonded to.

With the recital finished, the family having heard every heroic and disgraceful detail, an army of Tau apeared behind the fallen three. Slowly they glided back to join the ranks of the dead.

This was 'The Heros Hall'

Where every Fire Warrior born on Vare would never be forgotten.

Every Vare Warrior is a cherished soul.
Every Vare death an unforgiving loss.
Forever watched over by the 'Shadows of Souls'.

I really like the fluff you had at the end there. You thought of a really cool way to honor the dead. Onto the game.

I think I'd drop the ui, bonding, and shield drones in your fire warriors squads. That's a ton of points just to keep them alive, when the devilfish are there to protect them. You could buy a pair of deathrain suits with those points.

Were they running behind the devilfish during the game, or where they just on the table to show who was in each? If they were running, why? Also, with the devilfish SMS are the way to go because drones give off free kill points if they are destroyed. When using devilfish make sure you face the front of the vehicle towards the enemy each time, and pivot it so you don't expose your side/rear armor.

Were those the only havocs your friend had, cause that was not the best setup for a havoc squad? Secure and control is a hard mission to win, and I'm not sure your fire warriors would have been able to claim the objective even if they got there. They are no match for Chaos Space Marines up close. You could have contested it by keeping them in the fish and constantly moving, and would have won by holding your own objective.

Well done, and can't wait for more.

Thanks for the comments and I'm glad at least one person likes it lol.

I definatley missed having some XV8s on the field, but this was my first attempt at utilising 'fish properly. My squads were running behind the 'fish simply because I thought my opponent would have tried to take them out to stop my warriors advancing. With his Havocs he could have destroyed the 'fish quite easily which in turn would have caused problems for my FW.

I completely forgot the 'fish could be used to contend objectives with the troops inside.

Yes they were his only Havocs and agree to his bad placement from the start as not all his troops could see my Ionhead. He spent the entire game shooting the Ionhead with two weapons where if he had taken one turn to move the missile launcher he would have had more shooting throughout the match.

I have examined the match alot, and I see potential for the 'fish but personaly prefer having XV8s for the killing power against Marine armour.

I really enjoyed the report.

Another great one from you, so I think less people post as this is almost what we expect from you . You're just really good at writing them.

I also enjoyed the fluff at the end.

Its the gaming and fluff side I enjoy the most. Painting I like but cant sit down and paint for long where as writing I can do loads lol. I try simple schemes but my Tau are second hand and the paints on them seem more like stuff you would use to paint walls. Had some success stripping them, but half melted the models lol and other stuff wont get the paint off. Its realy demoralising when you put time in and due to lack of detail from thick base coats they look rubish. I am getting there though.

Thanks for the post though. Just ordered all of the expansion books so hopefully will have games with alot more life in them soon.

I played my first planetstrike game on saturday, attacker with orks.

Planetstrike is a fun game although the attacker does have a huge advantage in being able to bomb the living daylights out of the defender before attacking. Although we played 2600pts, and the firestorm killed a large amount of men, so for lower point games I would recommend not using the firestorm.

It is great fun though.

I have a Tyranid army building up slowly (as I was not suppose to start it until I got these secound hand Tau models done). My mates have Space Marines and Chaos Marines, armegeddon match should be fun, some fluff of Tau Control Collars on the 'nids maybe, or Ultras having no choice but to accept the help of the Tau when facing an oncomming horde of Chaos and 'nids. This weekend maybe.

I'm likin' the fluff Bonkers (or should I call you Raving?)

Anyway about the battle, just a few (one I guess) question

You rolled a 6 for the Assault Phase move (Iridium Armor)? That's lucky, it looked like he'd be in Assault range otherwise...

Okay, my real one question is: how did the objectives work? You could only capture the one in the Chaos corner and he could only capture the one in your corner? Because it looked like he controlled his and you didn't have any Troops on (meaning within 3" of) yours :P

Sorry I'm late for the party :funny:, I missed this somehow.

Yes, it was some luck on my part but I have always used Iridium Armour and fusion blasters so I've got good at guessing what is 12". AS long as I can get good on 11." to 12" then all I need to roll is a 1 to be out of assault range. However there were times when I needed a higher roll and luck was with me.

It was more his say to call it a draw even though I said about the game objective. We had agreed a 6" range for objectives and my troops were still just out of that. Despite objectives a few in my gaming group, including this guy, will hand over a victroy if they can see the match has clearly not gone in their favor. In this he was the one who said that 2 teams of FW, broadside, Ionhead, devilfish and my commander would easily work its way through the squad if he was to attempt to break my lines.

I am the same. No point calling it a victory if I won because my only troop left on the table was within 3" of an objective and was surrounded by many enemies. Some play dead set on rules but we like more for fun, story and if its clear one person would win if they had those "please just one more turn" moments then we let them have that win. (as long as its agreed by both sides, all are good and sporting players)

Finaly, most call me raving but I don't mind either way. My mates call me Ash-Hole after my real name being ash lol.
