Default Tournament battle report IG v Tau, some rules questions

Battle report

Situation
Round 2 of a tournament with the prize a battle force box. The winner here goes on to play the winner of a Nids v SW game which is current 0-2-0. The game could have been best of 3, however players could agree on 1 game instead which we did. There would be 4 rounds max.

My list
Lord Com – Plasma pistol, carapace, power fist, melta bombs
Vet squad – 3 melta, carapace, shotguns, power fist, plasma pistol
Vendetta
Vet squad – 3 melta, shotguns, power fist, plasma pistol
Vendetta
Vet squad – 3 flamer, shotguns, power fist
Vendetta
Vet squad – 3 plasma, Chimera
LRBT (vanilla) x 3

His list (to best recollection)
Boss with fusion gun, plasma, missile pods
Boss with plasma, missile pods
Crisis suit with plasma, missile pods, team leader +1 BS x 2 x 3

Mission and deployment
The terrain was set up by the TO, quite a few LOS blocking buildings, some 4 stories high. Mission was rolled as KPs and pitched battle. I won the roll and decided to go second with my strategy. He deployed most of the army, keeping the devilfish and fire warriors in reserve with the fusion gun HQ as well. There was a central building that would be perfect for JSJ, one corner had a 4 story building for path finder deployment and the tanks were kept central. One unit of kroot outflanking. I reserved the LR (plan to roll on and shoot but wanting to delay a little otherwise the Tau would make short work of them in the first 2 turns, outflank with the 2 melta vendetta (forcing him to stay central for the pie plates), reserve the Chimera and reserve (not outflank) with the flamer unit in anticipation of trying to grab some kroot KPs as I was sure some would be on my half.

Turn 1
The suits in the middle move towards the central terrain piece, the kroot are positioned in a rough triangle with the suits in the middle of this. Tanks reposition so in turn 2 they can end up in the middle away from my sides. My turn is fast.

Turn 2
Most of the suits and Kroot take the middle ruin, well protected from 80% of my side, the remaining 20% could see though low level doors into the terrain. Outflanking kroot come on and spread along one side to try to restrict the side where he doesn't want me to outflank into, remaining HQ deepstrikes into terrain close to my side. My reserves bring on 2 LR, the Chimera, non-HQ melta, and flamer squad. One LR tank shocks (is this possible from reserve?, we were unsure but checked this out prior to the game and agreed it could be done as he is always looking for a chance to cover the board edge with Kroot for full reserve options), Kroot fail morale and flee. This gives room to bring on the other LR and the Chimera, I bunch them in the corner with the angle through the windows. The melta squad comes on by the pathfinders with the intention of a t3 charge on them, but this turn they get shots into a rearguard suit unit, cover saves made. The vendetta has a lascan shot within 12” (sick piece of wargear that for 5 points) of a head but it fails. The flamer vendetta goes straight up the guts to stop just short of the main terrain piece. Idea is to disembark next turn, flame kroot through suits and charge the suits with my PF. LR don't shoot much, but double tap plasma and lasguns kill the HQ unit close to me. KPs 1-0 with 1 fleeing unit. Plan is working well at the moment, I will get 4 turns of shooting and he 3 (assuming 5 turn game). Idea was to restrict the turns of rail shooting (pathfinders + rail makes short work of a vendetta, planned for this but making sure my troops finished close to where they needed to be to do their damage instead of no-mansland).

Turn 3
His DF comes on, put a distance away as it leaks 2 KPs. Kroot fall back and rapid fire 2 vets away on the flee, army unloads but only manage to get 1 vendetta. This was a very unlucky shooting round from the Tau. One more LR comes on. My melta vets get a multicharge off against the pathfinders and the suits, vets win as PF rips into the suits and both units flee. Flamers target a middle unit of suits with kroot as bonus, charge suits and PF wins it, vets now hold the centre as more kroot in the middle die to pie plates until they are forced to take a morale check and flee. Multiple pie plates got the IK on the remaining HQ, one head immobilized. KPs 4-0 with 3 fleeing units.

Turn 4
Fire warriors come in, go straight into the DF. Fleeing units are being escorted and cant rally. Heads fail in shooting but flamer vet squad cut to bits by str 5 shots from the vehicles. My HQ melta squad comes on and turbo boosts straight to the middle where his tanks are hiding. Melta squad already on just hides in cover (their job is finished) which escorts off the last 2 fleeing units that side. Remaining flamers finish last suit in the middle with flame. 2 heads get the rail blown off both. KPs 5-0.

Turn 5+
3 units flee off the board (8-0). Shots are now severely limited, no major damage caused. Melta squad and remaining flamer converge on a head, melta shots do nothing but 3 powerfist attacks finish the tank. Small tank fire kills the flamer squad, game goes to t7 and ends 11-1 on KPs.

Post game comment
This is the first time my list has truly fired in the way I imagined it could. Not the most enjoyable game due to the disparity in the result. LRBT get ignored with vendetta as targets. Vendetta seem to work well with the role the falcons had at getting the close quarters units to the action, any lascan shots are a bonus. In fact, they could probably be downgraded to Valks and the additional points put into maybe carapace for more vets. Both vets were fantastic in CC, the power fists seem to be a good investment. There is ample str 8+ weapons in the list, seems solid so far as an all comers list. The LR had quite a few “hit” results this game (maybe 75%) but I'm not sure on their reliability to perform the task that is needed. Making sure the Chimera gets a 4+ from cover/LRBT means it is reasonably safe and the plasma shots from inside are a good bonus. For the next tournament, I will remove the plasma pistols from the sergeants (this can be an expensive waste). Maybe look at getting a heavy flamer into the flamer squad, the melta bombs on the Lord are also point sinks. Its almost another carapace unit.

Rules questions that arose from the game (ideally as ruled by a red shirt or TO at one of the major tournaments), opinions welcome but official calls better [note that this is a list of uncertain rules I have been collecting]

- Take the example of a command squad in a Chimera packed with plasma. 2 plasma die shooting to gets hot, fails morale check. What happens (do they need to take the morale check)?.
- An immobile vendetta, do you need to keep the black base with this as per the disembarking rules in the IG FAQ. It becomes really awkward to disembark. Can troops go underneath the wings? Otherwise it basically seems to require 5 guys on either side of the nose or the same at the back. How have people been disembarking from this?
- (Not from this game) – How is the Doom being played in tournaments? Does it effect units in vehicles, any cover save to those?
- Can you tank shock from reserve?

There is no answer. I honesty think that for purposes of Morale, units in vehicles are fearless.

The wings aren't part of the Hull, so yes, you can go under them.

I know Adepticon ruled it as affecting units in transports, but them getting a cover save. I personally think that they do not affect units in transports, and that you would not get a cover save.

Depends. If you are outflanking, yes, as you still move normally. You still have to "aim" and declare your distance first.
