Default Another random battle report - White Scars v. Tau, 1500 - 12/30/2009

I recently won a small painting competition and received enough credit to pick up a spacemarine bike. I went home that evening, put it together (along with 2 others) and realized that if I bought just one more bike, I could field this list:

White Scars
HQ
Kor'so Khan on bike
Chaplain on bike

Troops
10x space marines
--Flamer, Rhino: 2x storm bolters, extra armor
10x space marines
--Flamer, Rhino: 2x storm bolters, extra armor
10x space marines
--Flamer, Rhino: 2x storm bolters, extra armor
5x marine bikes
--Melta, Melta, Power sword, Attack bike with Multi-Melta
5x marine bikes
--Plasma, Plasma, Powerfist
5x scouts
--sniper rifles

Fast:
5x assault marines with meltabombs, a power fist and plasma pistol

1850 points.

The entire army can outflank.

I played 1500 against tau, so had to take out 1 squad with transport. :'(

Tau list: (IIRC)
Boss suit with 2+ armor save, plasma rifle, fusion gun, airburst frag and shield drones
2x flamer burstcannon suits
2x plasma missile pod suits
3x stealth suits with shield drones and fusion gun
12x fire warriors
12x fire warriors
12x fire warriors
12x fire warriors with devilfish
12x kroot with shaper
1x broadside suit
1x hammerhead

Mission: annihilation!
Deployment: Dawn of war

he won the deployment roll, and carefully deployed two squads of fire warriors up in two buildings along the midline of the board, and his HQ somewhere in between with his bodyguard.

I put down my scout squad off to the left in my deployment zone.
"I'm done!" I said cheerily.

Turn 1
Tau: He drives on with everything, even more carefully arranging his forces to take me on when I enter from my end of the table. A few pot shots at my scouts, much of his army tries to maneuver to shoot at my scouts, but Nightfighting rules thwarts it.
Scars: I look left, look right, spot my scouts, announce "Ok, I'm done moving. On to shooting!"
He thinks I've gone nuts, says, "I thought you had to come on the table?"
"Not if I'm outflanking" I say.
Realization blooms across his face in equal parts horror and well... horror. I aim my scouts at some tau, and realize they're out of range.

Turn 2
Tau: He pulls in a little from the edges, but not much. several shots are thrown at the scouts and they take 3 casualties.
Scars: I start rolling for units coming in
Kor'so Khan, chaplain and plasma bikers and a rhino come in on the right and a rhino and the assault squad come in on the left.

on the right, the rhino drives up, unloads its marines and they unload bolter death on a squad of firewarriors. The assault squad jumps the devilfish (loaded with kroot). It explodes and kills all but 2 kroot and the shaper. Kroot are pinned in the wreck.
-On the left, they open up with all kinds of bolter and plasma death on 2 different squads. a plasma gun biker dies, however, we kill all but 1 fire warrior in one squad and kill half of another squad. The bikers finished one squad off, and the larger squad breaks and flees off the table.

Turn 3
Tau: suddenly surrounded, they have nowhere to escape except by advancing, but most of his troops are hiding up in buildings hoping for a good shot. he shoots everything he has, and even does some damage, but not really enough: a couple marines here, a bike there, and 2 scout snipers, finishing the unit.
Skars: Other bikes refuse to come in. Commander's bike squad turns left (towards my table edge) and go after the stealth suits and kills them. left hand tac squad marches on the plasma/missilepod suits and kills it from massed shooting. Assault marines jump and chase after the tau commander, catching him in assault. The regular marine attacks kills his escort and shield drone, and the power fist on I1 kills the commander. the Right hand tac squad advances on the broadside and kills it. The 3 kroot are killed by the rhino's storm bolters.

I got to play for 2 turns, and slaughtered the heck out of him.
I like the white scars army. It plays like how I think. Come out of nowhere and devastate him where he's least expecting it.

Against a more experienced player, this army may have some problems, as they're more likely to bunch up in the middle or some other similar tactic. Of course, then I'd have to turbo boost my bikes on their first turn in to gain an invulnerable save, or line up behind rhinos.
Against things like Saim Hann, I'd have to play a bit more conservatively, focusing my moves and units to try and trap the opponent enough to kill a unit.

Strengths: Fast, hard hitting, surprisingly tough force, full troop selection
Weaknesses: limited anti-vehicle with only 3 meltas, a meltabomb and a powerfist. risky deployments: with the random nature of the outflanking rule, I risk bad rolls and breaking up my army too much.

I'm thinking about adding a command squad with a couple of thunder hammers. this might help deal with things like nob bikes and possibly terminators, but I'm not really sure. it would be fairly expensive and I'd have to lose a rhino to do so.

Do you not have to tell the opponent what is outflanking or is it up to them to ask?

You do at the time of deployment.

looking back I suppose that I mis-reported when I told him, but the shock on his face was still the same.
