Match: Planetstrike 5) Forlorn Hope
"Report Captain, make it quick I haven't got all day..."

Captain Torin quickly responded, "Sir! It's been fourty-six days and eight hours since Strongpoint Alpha was initially overrun, fourty-four hours since we've lost contact with PDF Strongpoint Delta. Epsilon hasn't reported in 8 hours, at last contact they hadn't seen or heard any xenos activity, but we've been unable to reach them, I don't like the look of that."

"You've met with heavy resistance?"

"Sir, yes sir. The bugs are proving to be stubborn and resilient, a challenging foe. They've committed themselves to this planet, they are in too deep to retreat if we gain the upper hand now... if"

"Exactly what I wanted to hear Captain, excellent work." While idly stroking his finger along a puckered scar on his forehead, "What is the situation in orbit presently?"

"We're having difficulties on account of the Hive Ships. Strike Cruiser Impetus Altus has been engaged by a Hive Ship and it's hull has been breached. The last we were able to make contact they were in the thick of heavy onboard fighting. Communication has been erratic, sir. Space-side we've not heard from the Ultramarines in over 48 hours, their last known position was further out, and directly in the path of more emerging Hive Ships. Scattered reports have them making way to the Aven Hive planetside, there's a Fortress of Redemption on the outskirts along with a heavy contingent of Bastions and defensive lines." The Captain stopped to clear his throat, "I'd have an Astropath try to make contact, but they're currently gibbering fools on account of the Shadow in the Warp. We're really in the dark here, and there's no getting word out if we aren't successful."

"Then it is up to us Brother. I could have used better news on the Impetus, we need them on the ground... now. But we need them in position for cyclonic bombardment more. This is a bloody mess, I'd have preferred a full account of Angels rather than be trying to sort out what Chaplain Cassius's blue boys are doing. Send Interceptors and an Assault Squad and assist the Impetus, if they fail then we're as good as done here."

"Sir, yes sir."

"Then prepare to assist personally in an Assault planetside below. Lemartes is looking for payback for his scars from the other day. He's assembling the Death Company, you will see to the Assault Squads. PDF Strongpoint Epsilon is one of the Emperor's finest sanctuaries ever built in this sector, a full indomitable Fortress. I will not lose Epsilon, Captain. Take a standard, and raise it high over the parapets, rally your brothers. The Emperor's sight knows no bounds, and no amount of xenos filth can block his radiant mercy. Once you've secured the Fortress, prepare to hold and draw them towards you. We will have the ships in position and begin extraction just prior to bombardment. We can cripple this splinter of the Hive Fleet, deny it the planets resources and then cut off the head. With no resources to fall back on we will crush them."

"Sir?"

"Yes Captain?"

"If I may, the assistance of our Venerable Dreadnought Brothers may prove invaluable here."

"See to it then Captain, rouse the Dreadnoughts for battle. I'll speak to you upon your victory. The Emperor protects!"

The Captain made the sign of the Aquila and recited, "The Emperor Protects!" in return.

Deployment:

Initial scans of PDF Epsilon show heavy signs of life, no contact was able to be established with Imperial Troops, though there was clearly life both in and outside the fortress. Hypertrophic flora was already beginning to choke the inside of the Aegis Defense lines, but the Tyranids had been clever, the building was still intact and the void shields were operational. Only large assault species were sighted hulking within the confines of the Defense lines and the Fortresses automatic defenses had clearly been reassigned, however the bugs had managed to do that...

The Blood Angels began to saturate the area with Firestorm barrages. None of them would pierce the veil of the Void Shield, but they managed to eliminate all of the free standing interceptor weapons. After a massive 13 firestorm strikes, all of the Tyrant Guard that were accompanying one of the Hive Tyrants lie smashed among the Hypertrophic flora, and a few of the larger assault organisms had their thick carapace plates compromised in a number of places.

Just after the last Firestorm crashed to the ground, a stasis bomb followed, striking the Fortress and locking it completely out of times flow...

Turn 1:

The Blood Angels crest a hilltop and approach from the unseen eastern position.

The Blood Angels are lead by a fast moving strike force, Landspeeders, Assault Marines, Tactical Squads and Dreadnoughts charge forward spraying plasma and a hail of solid slugs towards the Tyranids.

The Hive Tyrant becomes aware of the approaching Blood Angels as a plasma cannon blast tears into it's back, as one of the first Assault Squads carry the Blood Angels banner onto the field.

The Tyranids react, hustling towards the Aegis Defense lines in the east, hoping to ride out the Marines advance a little while longer in order to draw them in closer.

A Blood Angels Tactical Squad is surprised as a rampaging Carnifex plows into them from a flanking position effectively catching them from behind. Meanwhile, the Dreadnought behind is caught by Venom Cannon fire and has it's plasma cannon ripped off and leg actuators damage immobilizing it for the duration of the attack.

Turn 2:

While the Tactical Squad struggles with the Carnifex, a Baal Predator and the Death Company lead by Chaplain Lemartes reinforces the Blood Angels position from the rear. More plasma and solid shot flies forward, but protected behind the relative safety of the Aegis Defense line and thick carapace plates, the Tyranids weather the storm.

...

The Hive Mind watched as it lured it's prey in closer. Red shelled warriors were approaching, and bringing with it stinging plasma, and the large heavy plated prey which had little meat and often died in a fiery explosion. The Hive Mind never understood why the prey was always drawn to it's emptied hives, one defensive position was as good as the next, but they often put so much effort into retaking the hives... it attracted them in much the same way a planetfull of biomass attracted it. It was an unfortunate necessity but the other hives had to be torn down to make way for the invasion. Too many defensive positions would be difficult to hold down, and so it had sent it's heaviest weapons planetside to bring them low. It continued seeding it's spores, and sent forward observers to this new position, the largest hive it had become aware of here.

Sure enough, as it had learned and extrapolated the red shelled prey came in droves to retake the hive it had skillfully dispatched with a mere handful of creeping lictors and infiltrating Genestealers led by this planets Broodlord. Without harming the hive, they had entered a breach in it's defenses and cleanly excavated the meat inside before it even knew what was happening. With the threat neutralized, it sent its largest weapon beasts to prepare to counterattack the prey it knew was sure to come.

It was fully evolved to tend to this quarry, it had learned how the thick shelled prey operated over time. It was still somewhat surprised by the amount of plasma it brought forward however. Thick carapace shrugged off most of it's attacks, but the plasma was altogether different, it burned and stung no matter where it hit. It would need to consider this latest development, but it knew how to deal with it for now, plasma only seemed effective at range, and up close with tooth, talon, and claw it proved far less dangerous...

The moment had come, the quarry had moved too close within range of it's charge. The Hive Mind directed it's Hive Tyrants to press the attack. The massive winged Hive Tyrant flexed it's wings and launched forward, followed by lumbering Carnfexes. The second Hive Tyrant ran forward into position to extend it's boneswords catalyst into the nearby Carnifexes. It now knew what side the prey would approach from, and so it brought it's second Devilfex out from the far western flank where it waited. It would run it's way to reinforce the rear when it arrived. It's sniperfex blasted one of the fast hovering prey, watching it crash and explode leaving behind only a crater of smoking debris. The forward Devilfex sprayed borers into the prey near the front and the moment of truth had arrived.

It needed to eliminate the heavy plated prey fast. The smaller shelled warriors would be easy to crack open once it dealt with the larger ones. It directed it's minions to engage. The Flying Hive Tyrant rushed forward at one of the large prey, while a Carnifex engaged another. The last Carnifex in range charged into a wall of meaty shelled warriors, it knew the newest arrival, the black shelled prey would tear it down, but it had plans for them, they were nearly in position and when they charged the Carnifex, it would be time. In a matter of moments the Hive Tyrant scythed clean through the hard shell of the large warrior a number of times, triggering a chain reaction which resulted in it's fiery explosive death.

The Carnifex which engaged the other large plated warrior deflected a few incoming blows with its scything talon, but took a heavy blow to its side which ripped open its flesh. Badly wounded, but still functional, it finally managed to scythe through it's plating, and the warrior simply stopped moving as it was engulfed by flames.

The last charging Carnifex scythed through smaller warriors, choking them with it's toxic miasma, and took only a few ineffective blows in return.

The Carnifex which had surprised the prey at first was being steadily wounded by one prey with a powerful fist, but it kept scything through more warriors in an attempt to dispatch the pest.

The Flyrant cocks its head and identifies an assault squad carrying a banner the red shelled prey clearly found important. It flexed it's scything talons in anticipation...

Turn 3:

Behemoths lumber forward salilvating for flesh as the prey presses the counter-attack. Another massive plated prey arrives, this one in grey.

The prey struggles to react to the ferocity of the Tyranid response. They sting with solid shot, and plasma, and but it isn't enough to stop the ravening monstrosities. The black shelled prey rush the Carnifex in front of them tearing through it's carapace and leaving it nothing but hunks of destroyed flesh on the ground. The red shelled prey carrying their banner in front of the Flyrant rush him and one with a glowing talon manages to bury it deep in the Hive Tyrants leg. The Flyrant swipes at the red shelled prey with it's scything talons cutting a few of them clean in half. The prey finally punches through the flanking Carnifexes tough carapace killing it.

Just then, the Hive Mind is finally able to make contact with the Broodlord laying in wait amonst the hallways of the foreign hive, as the stasis bomb finally loses effect...

As the guns on the preys hive fail to function properly the Tyranid press the attack. The prey is tangled in xenoflora under Barbed Strangler shot and the hissing acids of Venom Cannon spray, while another hovering prey is destroyed under the barrage of fleshboring beetles. The prey failed to notice a half buried trap door which they had advanced over, and in a matter of moments Genestealers began pouring out as the Broodlord signaled them to join the attack. Smashed between the tough anvil of the monstrous tyranids and the slamming hammer of Genestealer rending claws, the prey was caught off guard and were mostly torn apart by claw and talon before even getting the chance to react. Their precious banner was cast down upon the ground.

Turn 4:

The last prey reinforcements finally arrive, with one more brood of red shelled prey.

The massive warrior charges forward ready to engage the Genestealers.

With a gout of heavy flame, and spray of bullets, the Warrior guns down and crisps the Genestealers, before crashing into the last few surviving and crushing them beneath it's heavy fists. The prey spray bullets into the Flyrant and finally tear through it's flesh killing it outright, while the Carnifex is destroyed by a plasma blast.

Flames engulf the Broodlord and retinue, blowing them apart with the intensity of the blast. The Broodlord turns and rips a number of the prey apart as they charge him, but falls to the last few talons of the remaining prey.

The Devilfex struggles to charge across the field of battle to assist it's broodmates in time.

The remaining Carnifexes and Hive Tyrant smash through what little resistance is left among the prey near them before turning towards the only remaining survivors.

Turn 5:

Having taken critical losses the prey struggles to recover momentum. They turn their remaining guns on the behemoths left, but to little avail.

The prey seem unwilling to abandon the large plated warrior which is still stuck in it's position, and set to receive the killing blows of the Tyranid monstrosities.

With many of the Tyranid hulks near to death, they ready themselves to crash into the few remaining prey and cut them down to the end. The prey never recover their banner in time, and prepare for their destined inevitability....

Aftermath
"Report Lieutenant"

"Sir, we've sustained heavy losses. We've lost complete contact with the Impetus Altus, including our strike force sent to assist them. Our long range scanners have also picked up incoming Hive Ships arriving in system just outside the planetary orbit. Our calculations matrix indicates xenos activity will increase by over 800% in just under 12 hours. This is no longer a splinter, the main Hive Fleet has arrived. Our current position is directly between the new Hive ships and those already in system, if we don't relocate we'll be caught in a vice grip.", the Lieutenant said with clear concern in his voice.

"And what of Captain Torin Lieutenant, what of Strongpoint Epsilon?"

"We lost contact with Captain Torin at PDF Strongpoint Epsilon, his last communication indicated they were close to retaking the Indomitable fortress, but then the signal gets chaotic. We were able to retrieve Lemartes and teleport him ship-side, but he is in critical condition. I've never seen anything like it..." the Lieutenant trailed off, in obvious shock such a hero could be brought down by mere "bugs".

"I haven't time for the commentary Lieutenant, continue."

"Sir, Chaplain Lemartes is in the medical bay, they are working on his wounds, his condition is uncertain at present. As for the rest of the strike force, our instruments are no longer picking up any signals from their vitals scanners. The entire detachment appears to be down. We've lost them sir... the Armor, Dreadnoughts, and squads, and Captain Torin... everything."

He paused to consider the new information, and continued staring out the large window toward the planet below. "Congratulations on your promotion, Captain.", and trailed off himself. Anger raged inside, that these foul creatures could thwart the might of the Angels, that they could bring low such honorable and awesome heroes of man... he seethed with fury and began mentally reciting the Litanies of Hate in his head as an exercise.

After a few moments of silence passed, "Sir? What is your command sir?"

"We're not in position to complete Exterminatus without the assistance of the Impetus Altus, or the Ultramarines. Would that I had more resources to deploy here, but we're unable to call for or receive reinforcements if none have been dispatched already. I would gladly make this a glorious last stand, a fitting heroes end if I thought we could buy the Emperor the greater victory at the cost of our lives..."

The newly promoted Captain watched the planet below along with his superior in silence. Vast swaths of the landbound continents had already been turned a hellish alien color, and the boundaries of that abomination continued to expand steadily, like a purple ink stain flowing along paper.

"But today is not that day Captain. List Orestes as lost, order the extraction of our men below. Make sure we pick up any Ultramarines which may be down there, there's no guarantee they will be able to make contact with any of their own, and we will not leave our brother's behind. Focus on Aven in your search for them", he said as he pointed to the massive Hive city sprawling in the equitorial region.

"Yes sir. What shall we tell the Planetary Governor? He communications have been frantic, and requesting extraction himself."

"Thank the Governor and the citizens for their honorable service to the Emperor. Inform him their noble sacrifice will be noted along with the fate of Orestes, and this solar system."

The Captain nodded solemnly, "Yes sir."

"Order preparations to evacuate the system. Once our men are onboard we move with haste. The Emperor Protects!"

"Sir, yes sir. The Emperor Protects."

...

From deep within the cold void, the Hive Mind watched the situation on this prey planet, and above in space through the eyes of it Synaptic relays. With scouring of the planet going as planned, the prey finally looked like it was preparing to flee. It had sent its Hive Ships to catch them however, and was already fanning it's ships out in a hunters pattern to net whatever tried to escape. This planets rich biomass, along with the other biomass in the solar system would sustain the Fleets growth for a good long while. The red shelled defensive prey had been crippled along with the blue shelled prey, and the rest of the meat on the planet was being scythed down and prepared for digestion as rapidly as could be hoped.

No. We move them over there after a few days. That way people that only browse the Tyranid board get to look at it and we get to karma it, then move it over so the ones that browse the batrep board can see it.
