Default Space Marines vs Orks - 1,500 (June 13, 2009)

I got in a game on Friday. This is my first real game with Marines, had a few forgetful moments but nothing severe. I tried putting together a battle report below. I can't recall exact numbers and even which unit moved exactly where on what turn, but for the most part it's relatively complete.

Here's our lists:

Marines

HQ
* Captain w/relic blade, bolter & artificer armor = 145
* Command Squad = 180
Company Champion
Apothecary w/bolt pistol & chainsword
Vet w/bolt pistol & chainsword x 2
Vet w/botl pistol, chainsword & standard
Drop Pod

Elite
* Terminators x 5 w/assault cannon = 230
* Dreadnought w/heavy flamer, multi-melta + Drop Pod w/locator beacon = 160
* Sternguard x 5 w/missile launchers x 2, combi-melta x 2 + Sgt w/combi-flamer x1 = 150

Troops
* Tactical Marines x 10 w/flamer & heavy bolter + Sgt w/power fist, bolt pistol & teleport homer + Rhino w/dozer blade = 250
* Tactical Marines x 10 w/flamer & multi-melta + Sgt w/chainsword & bolt pistol = 170
* Scouts x 5 w/sniper rifles & camo cloaks = 90

Fast Attack
* Assault Marines x 5 w/flamer + Sgt w/power weapon, combat shield & metal bombs = 125

Total: 1500

Orks

HQ
* Warboss w/mega armor, cybork & attack squig
* Big Mek w/KFF, 'eavy armor, PK & attack squig

Elite
* Kommandos x 14 w/rokkits x 2 + Nob w/PK
* Tankbustas x 7 w/tankhammers x 1 and Nob w/PK

Troops
* Slugga Boyz x 11 + Nob w/big choppa, bosspole -trukk w/ram, rokkit, stikkbomb chucka
* Slugga Boyz x 12 + Nob w/big choppa, bosspole -trukk w/big shoota, stikkbomb chucka
* Shoota Boyz x 30 w/big shootas x 3 + Nob w/big choppa, bosspole
* Grots x 20 + Slaver x 2

Fast Attack
* Deffkoptas x 3 w/rokkits x 2 & big shoota

Heavy
* Boomwagon w/'ardcase,red
* Looted Wagon w/2xrokkits

We rolled up Capture & Control with Pitched Battle deployment. I won first turn. Here's our setup. Oh, my objective was the building with my scouts (bottom left), and Tyson's was the building top right with the Grots.




Turn #1

Marines
I moved, then later ran, my Tact Marines into the building north, followed by my Assault Marines. The Rhino moved north. Scouts shoot into the large Shoota Boyz mob and get a few. The Sternguard fired off both missiles and those with bolters used their kraken rounds and killed off a few Grots. My Dread drop pod arrived and unloaded its multi-melta into the Looted Wagon with Tankbustas inside, getting a destroyed result. The Tankbustas lost a few from the explosion but passed their pinning check. However, they failed their morale test, even with the bosspole, and fell back.



Orks
The right most Trukk moved east and unloaded its Boyz. The other Trukk moved up and turned sideways to protect the mob of Shootas. Boomwagon moved up a bit, as did the Shoota Boyz & Big Mek. The Slavers with the Grots moved a bit west inside the building to get a view on my Dread.

Boyz and Slavers fire on my Dread's rear armor and get a shaken result. The Boomwagon fires on my Tact's inside the building and removes a few. The Boyz then charge my Dread to remove my CCW. In return I removed a few boyz but the fight continues.



Turn #2

Marines
My Command squad, w/Captain, drop pod shows up near the Dread and jump out. Termies arrive and scatter southeast. The Rhino moves north and unloads the Tact squad.

Rhino Tact squad fires at the Deffkoptas but my poor disembarking only puts a few bolters on them, causing a wound (messed up in the pic and removed it on accident). The Sternguard unload some more into the Grots and get a few more kills. Scouts get a few more Shoota Boyz down. The Termies unload into the Trukk north of them and immobilised it. The Tact squad in the building fire the multi-melta and shake the Boomwagon.

Command squad joins the assault to aid the Dread. With no losses on my part, they kill all but 2 Orks who fall back (terrible sweeping advance roll). Dread consolidates towards the Shoota mob and the Command squad consolidates nearer the building east.



Orks
Boomwagon moves up a bit, as do the Shoota Boyz and Big Mek. Immobilised Trukk unloads its Boyz who move south. The Warboss who was with them instead heads to my Dread. Grots and Deffkoptas moves near my northern Tact squad. Kommandos outflank and show up near my Sternguard.

Everything that can Waaaghs!. The unloaded Trukk Boyz and Shoota Boyz move south more. Between Deffkoptas and Grots I lose 3 Tact Marines(Grots killed 2 of them!) to shooting. I decide to use Combat Tatics and fail my morale check but a lousy fall back move only gives me 4".

Trukk Boyz make the charge on my Termies. I remove about 4 of them and take a loss in return; Orks stay. The Warboss charges and dismantles my Dread then consolidates towards the vacated Trukk. Kommandos slam into the Sternguard and I'm left with only 2 who stay and fight. Deffkoptas charge my fleeing Tact squad and I'm unable to regroup (another lousy roll), so they are destroyed.



Turn #3

Marines
Command squad w/Captain move into the ruined building a bit. My Rhino attempts to tank shock the Grots with no luck. Assault squad moves near the Koptas and a lucky few shots removes the wounded one. Scouts take more shots on the Shoota Boyz getting a kill or two.

The Termies destroy all but the Nob in their assault and the Nob retreats. Assault squad charges and destroys the last 2 Koptas. Sternguard are killed off with a few Orks taken down.



Orks
Warboss hops into the Trukk and moves south. Shoota Boyz move towards the Termies. Kommandos move towards the Assault squad.

Boomwagon takens out another Marines with the boomgun. Shootas fire off a ton of rounds but the Termies hold strong.

Shoota Boyz make assault with my Termies and I lose one. The Orks lost a few from the Termies but stay. Kommandos assault my Assault squad and destroy them completely (messed up in the below pic).



Turn #4

Marines
Tact squad in the building moves out and towards the Termie assault. The Rhino moves south to try and tank shock the Kommandos but get nothing. Command squad fires on Grots and get a kill or two.

Tact squad joins the Termie assault and kill off a few. The Orks reduce my Termie squad down to one.



Orks
Warboss jumps out of the Trukk and the Big Mek, who got lagged behind a bit, moves to the Termie assault. The Boomwagon moves east and the Grots move north into the building with the Command squad.

Grots manage to shoot down a Vet. Boomwagon fires into the building, and I believe, took out another Vet.

The Orks finish off the last Termie. With the Big Mek joined in the assault, my Tact squad is finished off also. The Orks consolidate into the 1st and 2nd floor of the building the Scouts are in (they are on the 3rd floor). Kommandos assault the Rhino but get nothing. Courageously the Grots charge the Command squad and are beaten then swept.



Turn #5

Marines
Scouts fire on the Boomwagon. Getting lucky they remove the boomgun.



Orks
Shoota Boyz move further up the building and the Kommandos move north to the Command squad firing a few shots (think I lost another there). The Shoota Boyz charge the Scouts and utterly destroy them.

The game ends and the Orks win.



Thoughts
It was a great bloody battle that was fast paced. Had I disembarked my Tact squad from their Rhino better I might have reduced the Deffkoptas a lot more and avoided my terrible Combat Tactics retreat that destroyed me. I focused my Tact squad in the ruined building too much on the Boomwagon. I took some other shots I forgot to note in the report because it didn't net me much. I should have left the building with that Tact squad and helped out in the east.

In my assault phase in turn #4, if my last Termie just held out I might have pulled out a win. In the subsequent turn #5 assault by the Orks, I took a ton of wounds and had allocated 4 to the Sgt. All I had to do was make 4 armor saves for my Sgt so he'd stay in the fight, letting me contest the objective, but it wasn't to be.

I love it when games come down to one dice roll at the end to decide the outcome. That's what you get for using space marines instead of your orks though.....just kidding. I can't say much cause I've got both a Tau and Space Marine army.

Why didn't you charge in and kill off those grots instead of wasting firepower on them? I'm assuming they just went to ground when you shot at them.

I agree. I may have lost, not uncommon against this particular friend, but I put up a fight and it was damn bloody, all I ask for in a game.

At which point? Only chance I had to charge them was with the Command squad. Only reason I didn't charge them was I didn't want to risk abandoning the objective and finding myself just short of being in range to claim it or risk having Kommandos reach me and tie me up outside of objective range. Worked out though since I destroyed him when he came to me. The Tact squad from the Rhino was planning on heading in there, which is why I was pushing the Command squad that way, but my unfortunate incident cut that short.

definately the best report i've seen up here so far

Judgin by the lay out you lot were playin' 4th ed?

Great job to the boss what hacked up the marines

Proud to be a greenskin, hehe, tho next time trade the nobz in the squads and the gretchin mobz for a Nobz Mob. There's nothin scarier than a mess of nobz chargin with big choppas (50 Attacks at S7 on the charge) and if you got the points you can slap some armor on and stick in a painboy, gives you two 4+ saves you can take, really pisses off my tau buddy

stick em in a battlewagon and theyre damn near invincible

anyway!!

Good job, and my condolences to the Marine player, heck of a fight, but we got the WAAAGH!!! on our side :rockon:

It was 5th and I was the Marine player :P Orks are my primary army but I've been building up a Marine army and been fielding it lately to test it out.

Good report! VASSAL FTW! You played smart, leaving the termies to try and protect the scouts. It definitely could have worked out.

One quibble though, when your command squad came in, they assaulted. I don't believe you can assault the turn you disembark from a drop pod, since the pod counts as moving at cruising speed.

Good call on the drop pod and you are right. I've played a few games since this one, 3-way battles though, and haven't made that mistake since this first game with them. I do keep forgetting other things though, like using smoke launchers, but at least those mistakes aren't hurting my opponent.

Sweet batrep, hopefully we'll be able to get plenty of battles in once I move over. I'll be there for about three years.

I just have to paint my armies now... :shifty:

Hey, we all make mistakes - especially where weird special rules are concerned (like pods). Looking back through the 'rep, I found another item - this time one that would work to your advantage. When the fleeing marines were charged by the deffkoptas, they should have automatically passed their leadership test due to "And They Shall Know No Fear". They would have then had a chance to kill the 'koptas and take further part in the battle.

Damn, you're right because in that case it's a test to regroup...no idea how I missed that. That so would have changed the tide of battle had I caught that. I appreciate you catching all my newbie Marine mistakes.
