WAARGH Grumgutz vs. The Cadian 207th (Tea and Krumpin'!): Look Piccies!

Hi All,
I bring a new Grumgutz installment, this one vs. the Imperial Guard. It's a bit of an aloha to the old Codex, and yes, it is as usual a brutal combat between Imperial Firepower and Greenskin Choppas! Very fun game, and we did something a bit special to try things out (Read on!)

Best,

"Oh we're completely buggered is what it is." Colonel Farnswell of the Cadian 207th looked at his barely legible map, scowling and sipping his mostly lukewarm tea. "Not only are we being completely useless, as far as I can tell, but we're endangering the entire lives of our entire batallion all for sitting on top of a lot of very volitile explosives. Oh, sorry, Emporer Protects, very frakking valuable volitile fuel."
Lt. Greaves took another swig from his moderately illegal flask of alcohol distilled from old brake fluid, grimicing. "Gads this is horrible, but it could be worse. We could be out there."
Farnswell nodded, "Heretics, Eldar, and now bloody Greenskins. What is going on with this planet? It seems like everything is going to go down the tubes... If it hasn't already."
Greaves tapped the last of the flask into his mouth, "It seems that we've survived the entirely unpredictable warpstorms only to be thrown forthwith into this incomprehensible planet that's halfway into the warp as it is. Lucky, I guess that at least we get to be the ones guarding the fuel depot. Seems that everyone is going wild trying to get TO this planet. Nobody wants to leave."
Farnswell sighed, "Except us, old boy, except us."
Greaves nodded. "By the way, do you hear what they're saying about NINE Leman Russes? Mars must be having an amazing fire sale..."

Warboss Grumgutz Bitzgrabber looked over the horizon, spotting what he had come for: The Imperial Fuel Depot! Big Mek Wingnut had made a horde of Kroozas, and everything was rosy until everyone realized that there wasn't enough fuel for liftoff! (Even plunging the depths of Grumgutz's personal craptraps for Oil Squigs didn't help enough...) Luckily though, thought Grumgutz with a grin, the Beakies were always good about putting plenty of swag around with their runts guardin' em'. All it would take to get some of it would be some ol' persuasion with the business end of a Choppa!

Pre-Game Thoughts: Well, it's a final farewell for the Guard before their new Codex comes out, but what a way to go! I'm actually outnumbered! That's a LOT of infantry (not as much as WAARGH Grumgtuz vs. Great Boss Tuska, but still, that's a LOT!) and a LOT of guns. The two Russes looked like they were going to cause me no end of headaches, and the Basilisk as well... As an interesting side-note, the Guard player wanted to try out one of the new Valkyries (bare-bones though), and put in a unit of infantry in it as well. As a good sport, and also wanting to see how the Valkyries would work, I gladly agreed!

Mission: Command and Conquer
Setup: Spearhead
Terrain: Ruins

Setup: The terrains were setup again well scattered, keeping the center clear.
The Orks win the roll and setup first, putting Da Big Red Cheez (with its Crazy Eight/Big Mek Wingnut cargo) in the center, one mob to either side, with BigToof to the left in a building and the Killa Kans to the right. Lootas and Kannons were deployed in a building in the center-rear. The objective point was placed to the left adjacent to the Lootas' building. Grumgutz and Da Big Five were set on the left flank.
The Imperial Guard took its time to setup, given the mass of infantry. The Senior Officer Squad setup to the rear-left building, surrounded by the Alpha Infantry Platoon. The Infantry Platoon Bravo setup on the rear-right, covering a building and the surrounding area. The Leman Russes took to the sides of the building, and the Basilisk was well hidden. The Valkyrie and Sentinels were set to deep strike/outflank. The Veterans' Chimeras were deployed in the center, between the two massive Infantry platoons, strangely enough in the open (I guess he figured that Orks couldn't shoot TWO AR12 vehicles...). The guard placed their objective in the HEAVILY Guardsman filled building occupied by Bravo Squad.

The Guard try to steal the initiative but fail!

Turn 1: Orks
Colonel Farnsworth of the Cadian 207th swore when he saw the Green Tide bearing down on him and his troops. Most of the Orks did as was tradition and ran/zoomed forward, the Kans and Battlewagon taking the fore. Da Big Five and Grumgutz went down the left flank, turbo-boosting all the way. The Lootas on the other hand, targeted their massive guns on one of the Chimeras and wrecked it, forcing the plasma squad to disembark. The Kannons did likewise, but only managed to immobilize the melta squad Chimera.

Turn 1: IG
After some frantic shouting over the vox-comms, the two Officers decided that falling back was out of the question. Not only would they be set upon by all sides in the middle of a firestorm, but they would undoubtadly be blamed for letting an entire Ork horde somehow get to their front door...
The Guard decided that had to press their only, but really massive, advantage: Firepower. The Melta Verterans disembarked, and all of Alpha Squad shot at the Nob Bikerz! However, Dokta Chop must have been on a good day, and only two wounds were taken! The rest of the army shot at the Battlewagon, to no avail given the mighty AR14, less than accurate Battle Cannon scatters, and of course, the KFF! One of the Plasma gun squads did manage to take the CCW off one of the Kans (I scratched my head at this one, but I guess he's never encountered Grotzookas... yet.)

Turn 2: Orks
The Orks all continued to move forward, Grumgutz cackling as he neared the Alpha Squad and its entrenched Senior Officer. The massive mobz continued to move forward. The Kannons switched to frag rounds and managed to make a sizable hole in the Alpha Squad lead infantry line, giving enough room for the Nob BIkers! The Bikers obliged by piling in and attacking two infantry squads and the plasma veteran squad! The Grotzookas opened up at the mass of infantry in front of the tanks. The IG hadn't moved an inch and were unfortunately still bunched up. A massive amount of Mek-Floor Trash went hurtling through the air, heavily damaging the junior officer's plasma guard and also taking out huge chunks of the infantry! Da Big Red Cheez also hurted forward, taking a slight left around the building in front of the Basilisk and deposited Da Crazy Eight, who went straight for the Melta Veterans and also a Bravo Team Infantry block. The Lootas opened up as well, this time only managing to stun the Chimera...
Assault was horrible, brutal and very, very Orkish. Grumgutz and Da Big Five ANNIHILATED the Plasma Veterans and also both of the infantry blocks! They consolidated closer to the Senior Officer, who was looking really worried (and glad that it wasn't 4th edition!).
The Melta squad was likewise cut to ribbons by Da Crazy Eight as was one of the Bravo Team infantry squads. Some of the guard tried to run, but only a few meltas ran away, never to be seen again...

Turn 2: IG
The reserves come on the table! The Sentinels came on and found some cover behind a building, right next to the Lootas! (Luckily NO LOS, but still, worried!) The Valkyrie came, but was a bit off on its deep striking. The remainder of the Bravo plasmas and autocannons fired at the Killa Kans, but to no avail, as the AR11 & KFF was just a bit too tough (and well... the guard were too busy overheating themselves w/ Rapid Fire Plasmas!) Both of the tanks decided to try and backup the Valkyrie and shot at the Lootas! The Lootas had one shot miss, but the other hit dead on, doing 7 wounds! The Lootas immedately hit the floor and only 2 died! The Valkyrie didn't like that at all, and opened up its multi-laser, killing one more. Luckily, the Lootas held on (Morale=6!, whew!) The Senior Officer and his squad decided to zip over, and ran into the only surviving (though immobile) Chimera. And in a show of complete audacity, Colonel Farnsworth shot out of the Chimera with his Laspistol and wounded Grumgutz! (I can't believe I actually failed this save...)

Turn 3: Orks
Wow, things were getting ugly and fast! The Orks all kept going forward, except the left-most mob (who wasn't getting THAT great run rolls anyway), who reversed course and shot at the Sentinels, destroying one and knocking the weapon off the other. The right Boyz mob, was found to nicely be within range and assaulted an assault squad and a Leman Russ! Da Crazy Eight liked that idea and assaulted the other Leman Russ. Grumgutz assaulted the Chimera, clearly wanting some Senior Officer blood! BigToof kept going forward, sadly, just out of burninating range...
The Kannons tried to shoot at the Valkyrie, but sadly enough, its AR12 was a bit too much for the grots, who only managed to stun it...
Assault was once again fairly ugly, as one of the tanks and the Chimera were wrecked, and the Bravo Squad died as well. The other tank was mauled heavily by Da Crazy Eight, losing a weapon (Cannon of course), being immobilized, stunned twice (or thrice?) and shaken like a Polaroid picture (Yes, sadly enough, I have that song stuck in my head now too...). Still, its Heavy Bolter kept it somehow afloat...

Turn 3: IG
The Sentinels ran into cover, hoping to try to contest the objective, but things weren't looking good at all. The freshly bailed out Senior Officer ran, trying to clear some distance into cover and AWAY from the Nob Bikerz, but was unfortunately, much too short... The last of Bravo Squad fired into Da Crazy Eight, but did little damage, then in a COMPLETELY balls-out maneuver, the Basilisk fired point blank into the foot-slogging Nobz, annihliating 5 (didn't make ANY 5+ cover saves, and was too close together after smashing up the Leman Russ), and NOT killing the Russ... The two lone Nobz though, decided to stay and teach that Basilisk some manners! The Valkyrie deployed its infantry squad, who, with more than a little bit of luck (sigh), managed to lasgun up the grots, killing them all and making the unit useless... (Cover saves, just NOT working this round!)

Turn 4: Orks
The Orks really want to finish things up, and that's what they pretty much do, with Grumgutz assaulting the heavily damaged Russ, blowing it up. Da Crazy uh... Two attacked and wrecked the Basilisk. BigToof got to FLAME! the last of Bravo Squad, with the Grotzookas knocking the infantry down to a single man (who in some strange balls-out/hiding/pretending to be dead maneuvering decided to stay!). The Deffdread, though, decided that futile heroism should be exactly that, and carefully climbed up to the second story, assaulting and cleaning up the last man boldly/foolishly hanging on to the objective for dear life. And finally, FINALLY, the Deffrolla earns its keep as Da Big Red Cheez turns around and ROLLS OVER the Command squad! with S10, SIX ATTACKS (!), even the multi-wound Senior Officer couldn't save well enough, and the entire squad is turned into paste. (The Drivers of the Cheez put a special "Big Hat" marker on the Battlewagon ) Meanwhile, the right-most mob moves closer and occupies the now empty building with the IG objective. The mob that was dancing with the Sentinels again makes another turn and the Shootas prove that Orks can shoot too! They shoot at the grot-killing infantry squad, killing 5. The Infantry hold, but are then assaulted and easily brought down.

Turn 4: IG
The IG player was left with the Valkyrie and the Sentinels (only one with a working weapon) at this point, and decides to concede...

Ork Victory!

Post-Game Thoughts: Wow, this was bloody, brutal, and a LOT of Krumpin! I suppose I got lucky that the first few Battle Cannon salvos didn't do much, and he really did concentrate perhaps too much firepower on the Nobz. Still, brutal and horrible, horrible multi-charges! Still, the IG player had a lot of fun, and we have a rematch scheduled when the new Cheez, er... Codex arrives.

The Master of the Ravenwing shook his head. An entire fuel depot plundered! He watched from his Landspeeder as the fires consumed the last of the remains of the Imperial Guard. Only a few guardsmen had survived, managing to have run away at just the right time. No doubt, they would be found guilty of cowardice by the Inquisition Commissariat (Thanks Zenai!), but clearly the Orks were more dangerous than they had thought. Without this supply depot, the Imperial Navy would be hard pressed to evacuate their forces. Only time would tell what the Orks would do next...

Another great Bat Rep from BigToof! Yeap. a sorrowful good-bye to the 4th Edition Imperial Guard Codex. Now, say Hi to the NEW IMPERIAL GUARD CODEX AND TREMBLE BEFORE IT'S CHEEZE! :P Btw, IG High Command especially the Commissariat will execute those cowardly Guardsmen, not the Inquisition.

It's what I have to keep telling myself so that I stop thinking about Deep Striking Valkyries, NINE Leman Russes (with multiple variants), Chemically-Poisonous Fast-as-nuts Hellhounds, T5 Ogryn, 4 point Guardsmen, and massive, massive number of pie-plates from EVERYWHERE (even HQs now adays!).

Nice to see the spirit of Trogdor in your orks. I really thought you were in for a much tougher fight with all those guns. Guess target priority became the major factor in your victory. Like many of your other opponents they focus on the nob bikers, instead of throwing a tar pit/speed bump in their way. If he had concentrated on the other units I think the outcome would have been closer at least.

Told you the grotzooka kans are great. Still no idea when I'm going to start making mine, but I'll be sure to put them in my painting blog.

I hope to see another battle against the 207th when they get their new rules.

Scoutfox:
Thanks for the reply! Yes, as it's often been said, target priority is one of those two-edged swords, as a few unlucky rounds of shooting (although I guess not TOO unlucky, as even large plates drift 2/3 of the time) will doom those who concentrate on the Nob Bikerz too much. I was really surprised at the way the Orks took apart the IG infantry, but he did try to "speed bump" me in a way, but the only problem was really the Kannons which could frag apart his lines to make enough holes for the Nobs, and likewise the MIGHTY grotzookas (That's right, you were the one who first tole me about it!) which just tore massive gouts in the meat shield.
The new rules make me shiver, both in the good and bad way.

Best,
-BT

Gotta love dual charges. They rock the IG's world (I should know, I've played IG for many years).

You have the right attitude about the new IG dex. If they're more powerful, then so much the better (because they're a bit crappy now, honestly).

Besides, those tanks everyone is so worried about are rumored to be BASE 160. That's 20 boyz with a PK/BP nob. Give me the boyz any day on a normal board with cover and whatnot.
