WAARGH Grumgutz vs The Ancient Ones (Rolly, Polly Tin-'Eads!)

Hi All,
I bring another Grumgutz installment! Yes, I know its not the Ultramarines, but it's a rather smashing (literally) fight against the Necrons! I had fun with the battle, and wanted to share my particular experience with you all.

Big Mek Wingnut was cackling madly, adjusting dials and flipping switches. The "Gitsucka" was ready to go (see WAARGH Grumgutz vs. King of Monsters!) after a short delay to fix the hole made by the rampaging Tyranids. Word had spread far and wide, and now a new horde of boyz were ready to go. Warboss Grumgutz Bitzgrabber was already seated on his bike. He, like all of the Orks, could barely contain themselves. The so-called Gitsucka had the extraordinary ability to reach out along Warpspace, bending reality, and bringing new and hideous creatures to their world. Of course, there was no way to tell exactly what was going to come out, but the uncertainty made it all the more tantilizing for the horde. Wingnut finished his final preparations (which involved hooking up a few grots to a wildly sparking cable to keep it grounded for a moment) and pulled the master switch. Again, pulsating red energy filled the machine, and a screaming, keening, howling filled the air. The strange device seemed to swell with energy, but, unlike previously, the spectrum of energy shifted. The color changed from a reddish hue to a steady, unnatural green that seemed to menacingly, but silently crackle in the air around it. The Gitsucka buckled one last time, and the huge baloon body burst, revealing... a huge green and black pyramid that pulsed in the half-light of the fort. One of the more curious boyz walked over, and poked at it. He was immediately ripped into his component molecules as a silent shaft of greenish light whipped out and took him apart. The orks all pulled back around Grumgutz who only laughed as he saw silent, metallic humanoid figures start to appear from a glowing greenish portal in the pyramid.
"Tin-Heads! Not as fun as Bugs, but a good fight! Boyz, get ready, and give 'em some choppa!!"

Timeless, alien circuits flickered to life as the Necron Lord of the Ancient Ones stirred within his dreamless sleep. He awoke, emerging from his slumber to see a strange, but familiar sight: Orks. Their world was once teeming with the creatures, but the Necrons had long since brought their home into the realm of peaceful, silent death. However, something had changed. This place was not their Tomb World, but wherever it was, the foul stench and shrieks of the living were in abundance. The only logical choice was to bring this world into the fold of somber, elegant death...

Mission: Annihilation
Setup: Spearhead
Terrain: Ruins

Pre-Game Thoughts: Now THAT'S a lot of infantry. I had heard that the Necrons were pretty tough, and I wasn't pleased to see the Pariahs on the table either. Also the three sets of Destroyers were definitely going to make my day tough. Still, the Orks never give up, and it will be interesting to see how the ancient cyborg-undead will deal with the greenskins.

Deployment: The Necrons won the roll off, and immediately set up the table, taking a very large building for their table quarter. Not many other sizable buildings were available, and the surrounding small bits of ruins were well scattered. (For once Wingnut was glad he did NOT bring his SAG). The Necrons set the Monolith down to one flank next to the large building, which he populated with two squads of Warriors and the Pariahs. All three Destroyers were placed behind the monolith. One group of Warriors were deployed on the other side of the monolith in a small set of ruins. The Necron Lord with his Immortals were deployed front and center.
Wingnut and Da Crazy Eight were deployed in Da Big Red Cheez front and center, with the two mobz of Shootaz to either side. BigToof was placed behind Da Cheez, and Grumgutz with Da Big Five were deployed behind a set of ruins. TinEar and Da Lootaz along with Bogwog and Da Kannons were deployed hedged in a set of low ruins to the flank of Da Big Red Cheez.

Turn 1: The Ancient Ones
The Necron Lord strode forward, and with a gesture enveloped himself and his accompanying immortals with a blackish energy. However, at about the same time, the belabored Gitsucka bubbled and belched out a flare of Warp Energy! The clashing energies must have disorientated the Necron Lord, as he appeared within spitting distance of Da Big Five and one of the Shootaz! (Deep Struck 11" off target? Oh dear is right!) The Lord realized its situation and ordered all of the Destroyers forward as backup. The Destroyers and the Lord's squad all opened up on Da Big Five, trying to stall the Nob Bikerz, but to no avail, as only a few wounds managed to get past Dokta Chop's administrations. The Monolith also floated towards the orks and let out a flare of green energy at Da Big Red Cheez, but the Kustom Force Field kept any real damage from being done. The horde of Warriors with the Pariahs in the large building fired at the closest Shoota mob, but were out of range.

Turn 1: Orkz
Grumgutz laughed at his good fortune and roared forward at the Necron Lord. The nearby Shoota squad did the same. Da Big Five opened up their Dakkaguns as did the Shootaz, taking down a few Immortals. However, the real damage was done by Power Klaw, as all of the Immortals were torn down, and the Lord was knocked down to a single wound! The Immortals managed to do a wound or two back, but it wasn't enough, and the Lord turned to run. However, he was not fast enough and one Nob caught him and tore him apart! (At last the orks finally meet an army they can catch! ) The victorious orks all consolidated forwards towards the rest of the Necrons.
Da Big Red Cheez moved forward full throttle, smashing through a low set of ruins. The Kannons and Lootaz stayed where they were. Unfortunately, their normally powerful shooting was blocked by the enormous Monolith. The Kannons took a few potshots at the Monolith, but did little to the huge machine. The other shoota mob ran forward with BigToof, trying to get closer to the Necrons. BigToof especially managed to get a good run and managed to get within spitting distance of the Monolith!

KP Totals:
Necrons: 0
Orks: 2

Turn 2: The Ancient Ones
Without their Lord, the Necrons realized they were in real trouble. All of the Destroyers and Warriors fired at Da Big Five. Unfortunately, they managed to fell three of the Nobz, and Grumgutz was unable to keep the Nobz together, who turned from the withering fusillade and ran! (Horrid unlucky morale check!) Grumgutz snarled, and had no choice but to do the same... The Monolith suddenly realized that BigToof was close and getting closer! It moved backwards, but not enough. In any case, it fired a bolt at Da Cheez and took off its Big Shoota (I've never been so glad to have it open-topped before!)

Turn 2: Orkz
The Deffkoptas came in, outflanking, and took down a Destroyer, unfortunately just a few inches short of an assault...
Da Big Red Cheez honked its horns in barbarous glee as it shot forward and towards the Destroyers. Da Crazy Eight all leapt forwards and assaulted two of the squads, taking one entirely apart and knocking the other down to a single flying Necron. BigToof wiped away a giant orky tear as it klanked forward into into the Monolith. With a panaply of wirring death, it slammed into the Necron machine, obviously hitting something vital as it exploded in a flash of greenish energy! The rest of the shootaz continued to charge forwards. The Kannons and Lootaz also fired, but did very little to the cyborg-undead as the metallic creatures wouldn't stay down!

KP Totals:
Necrons: 2
Orks: 4

Turn 3: The Ancient Ones
The Necrons were in dire straights now. With the Lord and the Monolith both destroyed, the mobility of the Ancient Ones was seriously impaired. Their strategic battlements had become their prison, as they had no hope to flee from the incoming hordes. The Pariahs and Warriors fired at the advancing shootaz taking down a handful of orks from each squad, but not enough to stop the mobz. The Destroyers shot and then assaulted the Deffkoptas, taking them apart. The single engaged Destroyer was casually taken down by Power Klaw.

Turn 3: Orkz
The Orks kept coming forward, with Da Crazy Eight engaging and casually taking down the last destroyer squad. And with a pair of the WORST difficult terrain rolls ever, both of the Shootaz mobz were unable to assault the warriors... this turn. (I had thought that getting a 3 on an assault roll shouldn't be that hard )
However, the next turn was not to be, as the Necrons looked out at the situation (what with the incoming mostly unhurt Shoota mobz, Crazy Eight and BigToof), and conceded the game.

Final KP Tally:
Necrons: 3
Orks: 6

Result: Ork Victory!

Wingnut was already repairing the Gitsucka when he heard a rumble of engines. He peered up to see Grumgutz pulling into the Fort, snarling and yelling at Da Big Five. The Nobz were already withering under the verbal assault of the Warboss, and Wingnut was glad that he wasn't them. Still, Wingut had to admit, it was a good fight (though no doubt Mork was on their side). He sighed and looked up at the huge pulsating machine that seemed to hum pleasantly as it continously gnawed at the fabric of space and time itself. Who knows what would happen next!

Post Game Thoughts:
Ooh, a bad spot of luck in the beginning. Having the Necron Lord taken down Turn 1 really hamstrung the whole army, as did having the Monolith taken down early as well. The Necrons were planning to just sit and shoot it out, but clealry didn't realize how TOUGH orks are when backed up with a KFF. That, and they had focused on taking down Da Big Five while leaving Da Cheez and its Crazy Eight mostly untouched, which proved to be their undoing once the mob of Nobz broke through their lines. Still a good game, with just a bad stroke of luck that unfortunately made the game an uphill struggle for the tin-heads.

I know how you feel, BT. Failing a Morale Check despite your Bosspole. I was in the same situation as you. And maybe for the Big Red Cheeze, you can add Armor Plates to avoid that nasty Crew Stunned. Overall, I'm glad you did so well.

Hi All,
Thanks for the great responses!

Warboss Vandersnag:
Oh, I'm not sure what'll happen to the morale, but as long as it's the ONLY time this happens, I hope not much will happen.
Grumgutz's reasoning is that he had to "catch" Da Big Five and yell at the gits for running away.

Zenai:
Unfortunately, one of the Nobz that was killed was holding the Bosspole! (Darned wound allocation does come and blindside you at times...) Still, leadership 9 should have at least some assurance that you won't run away THAT easy...
I've often thought of putting Armor Plates on Da Cheeze, but being opened topped and all, I wasn't sure it would help that much. Perhaps in the next iteration if I can manage to squeeze out a couple of points...
I actually sort of felt bad for the Necrons after the first two turns as it was obvious that without the Lord and the Monolith their offensive had really gone to pot what with the Dread, Nobz and big Mobz still rolling around pretty much nonchalant to the incoming S4 shots, rapid fire or not (Mork bless the KFF!). The only thing that I had really left on my list of things to do that game was that I WAS looking forward to doing a bit of tank-shocking, but you get what you can you know...

Best,
-BT

Were you worried at all about the monolith? You have 2 (3 if you manage to ram the darn thing with Da Big Red Cheez) things in your army which can get a penetrating hit on it...

I shudder to think what would have happened if BigToof had failed. My necron opponent tends to try and kill everything that can hurt his 'liths early in the game and then use them to interfere with my plans by either blocking charges or teleporting his warriors to safety.

Thanks for the reply!
I was a bit worried about the Monolith, but luckily BigToof did come though (for once!) and save the day. Ramming Skimmers (which the Monolith technically is) is easier said than done, what with their ability to dodge it on a more than regular basis...
I think he was trying to use the Monolith to play keep away with the Shootaz, but I think he was surprised at the speed of BigToof (Running Deffdreads for some reason always surprise the dickens out of people...) Still, you are absolutely right that if BigToof had failed his attempt to KO the Monolith I would have been in quite a bit of trouble.

Best,

Oh... I forgot about that. Yes, having it dodge not only deny the kill, but it would also set the monolith in a prime position to toast the battlewagon...

Well, that's settled it. I've been struggling with what to add to my 1850 list (I have a little over a hundred points free). Now I see that it should be deff dread ala BigToof ;D

Good fight, though I feel that orks definately have the upper hand on Necrons this edition. My friend shelved his Necrons in favor of Deamons because he lost every single game in 5th. Just a couple things:

1. Do you find the red paint job is worth it on the battlewagon? You play that ramming vehicles causes d6 str 10 hits? (we do)

2. The gitsucka is such a great idea for a plot twist, allowing you to fight any army and have it make total sense. The only thing you might want to consider is making it portable so you can explain differing terrain in each battle.

3. The poor initive of the Necrons in their biggest downfall in 5th I think. The Orks are really slow, but I've time and time again run down crons.

4. With the lord and res orb gone, any wound from a kannon should instakill a warrior and deny their WBB as well. That is if you were shooting at the warriors and not the destroyers.

Great write up. I'll see if I can toss one up in the next couple days.

Scoutfox:
Hi! Thanks for the response! Sorry to hear that your friend shelved the Necrons, but I guess they do require quite a bit more finesse than in the previous edition...
In regards to C&C:

1. I have found the RPJ (red paint job) to be worth it only because I'm not the best when it comes to guessing assault ranges, and every inch counts when you're trying to double charge (something that Da Crazy Eight were basically built to do). I'm only the second person in our group to ever have used the Deffrolla, and I have yet to hit a vehicle with it. I've been told that if I do manage to hit a vehicle that we'll use the 1d6 S10 hits, but I've found that NOBODY has let me do that yet

2. Thanks for the kind words on the Gitsucka. I have plans for it, but the idea of making it portable is also very keen! I'll may steal that idea if you don't mind...

3. Well, it's sad to hear that Necrons kept getting run down. With the new assault rules it seems like they do have a hard time keeping together after a nasty (especially Ork-based) assault.

4. I umm... was actually shooting at the destroyers, trying to whittle them down for the easier KPs. All of the Warriors were "moments" away from being assaulted anyway (if I could ONLY roll a 3 on 4d6!) and I was hoping to try and disable the Destroyers before they flew away. Of course as soon as the flying Necrons were taking care of, the Dakka would clearly be thrown at the Warriors. Still, with SO many infantry, I couldn't really hope for an easy phase-out, so I tried to use the guns on the smaller squads.

Looking forward to see a battle report!

Best,
-BT
