Default Battle Report Necrons vs Vanilla Marines 1000pts

This is my first battle report so questions and comments are not only welcome but encouraged.

Necron vs. Space Marine ………………………… 1000 points

Necron List
1 Lord w/ Veil of Darkness – 160
Unit A - 10 Warriors – 180
Unit B - 10 Warriors – 180
6 Immortals – 168
4 Destroyers – 200
5 Scarab Swarms – 60
4 Scarab Swarms – 48
Total – 996 pts
Phase Out: 7

Space Marines
(I’m doing this list from memory and I’m not sure of the point values so I’m going to write what I know was on the board)
Chaplain w/ Jump Pack and 4+ Invulnerable save
Unit 1 - 8 Marines w/ Heavy Bolter
Unit 2 - 8 Marines w/ Heavy Bolter
Unit 3 - 8 Marines w/ Heavy Bolter and Power Fist
8 (I think) Assault Marines w/ 2 Plasma Pistol and Power Fist
Predator Annihilator w/ 2 Lascannon Sponsons
Predator Annihilator w/ 2 Heavy Bolter Sponsons

Game: Cleanse Board Set-Up: 2 | 3
Level: Alpha 1 | 4

The board was divided into table quarters with the Necrons owning quarter 1 and the Space Marines owning quarter 3. Quarter 1 had a size two hill in it and a piece of area terrain close to the border between 1 and 4. Quarter 2 had to triangular pieces of area terrain, one near the top left corner and the other touching the center of the board but still only occupying quarter 2. Quarter 3 had two size one hills closer to the table edge and near the border between 2 and 3. There was also a small wall and some barrels near the short edge of the board. While quarter 4 had a single piece of area terrain just near the center. Hopefully that wasn’t too confusing so you can make a mental picture of the board.

Necron Turn 1:
The unit of five scarab swarms makes a full 24” movement into the area terrain of quarter 4. While the other four swarms makes their full movement behind the area terrain in the back of quarter 2. The Lord and the six immortals veil into quarter 4 where they get a view of the side armour of the full Lascannon annihilator. Unit A moves into quarter 4 while unit B stays put. The destroyers move ahead of the area terrain and take their shots, with warrior unit B, against marine unit 1. They kill three and cause them to fall back. The Immortals shoot the side armour of the full lascannon annihilator and stun it.

Space Marine Turn 1:
Units 1 and 2 move towards the Necron Lord and the Immortals, while unit 3 moves to the top if the hill and the assault troops and Chaplain move behind the piece of area terrain near the center in quarter 2. The bolter annihilator fires on warrior unit A and kills one. Unit 1 fires on the immortals and does nothing. Unit 2 assaults the Lord and Immortals managing to kill one Immortal (fails WBB) and taking one casualty in return.

Necron Turn 2:
The Lord and Immortals veil to the left of the area terrain in quarter 4. Unit A moves behind the same piece of area terrain and gets line of site to Marine unit 2. The destroyers move just in front of the size 2 hill while warrior unit B moves back towards the Necron corner. The five swarm unit moves towards Marine unit 1 while the four swarm unit moves towards the assault troops. The destroyers fire on the bolter tank and stun it, while warrior unit A gets six out of nine rapid fire shots in range and kills two marines. The Lord and Immortals fire on the assault troops and kill one. The five swarm unit assault Marine unit 1 and kills one taking no wounds in return, four marines remain in the unit. The four swarm unit assaults the assault marines and takes down one, while taking three wounds in return which kills one swarm base.

Space Marine Turn 2:
Marine Unit 3 gets close to the assault marines to join the fight. Marine unit two remains stationary. The full lascannon annihilator shoots the destroyers and downs two of them, both of which get back up after passing their We’ll Be Back roll. Marine Unit 2 fire one warrior unit A with seven bolter shots and a heavy bolter, they manage to down two which fail WBB. Marine Unit 3 joins the assault with the scarab swarms and assault marines and they manage to kill all the swarms while taking no casualties. Marine unit 1 causes two wounds on the five swarm unit and takes one casualty.

Necron Turn 3:
The Lord and Immortals veil into the middle of quarter 3, just in front of the full lascannon annihilator (generally a bad idea), while warrior unit A moves to get full rapid fire on Marine Unit 2. The destroyers move up to the edge of the area terrain that in the corner of quarter 2. Warrior Unit B backs up a little bit to stay out of assault of the chaplain and assault troops. Warrior unit A rapid fires marine unit 2 and kills 2. The Destroyers fire on the heavy bolter tank and stun it again. The Lord and Immortals fire on the full lascannon annihilator and destroy it. The remaining swarms continue to assault Marine Unit 1 taking two wounds and killing three marines, the last one runs for it. The scarab swarms consolidate just in front of the wall in quarter 3.

Space Marine Turn 3:
Marine Unit 2 remains stationary, while the assault troops, Chaplain, and Marine Unit 3 all back track to get into assault range of the Lord and Immortals. Marine Unit 2 fires on warrior unit A (seven necron warriors remain in this unit) and don’t kill anything. The Assault troops fire on the Immortals, the plasma pistols both whiffed, one rolled a 2 and the other one got hot and killed the marine wielding it. Shooting did nothing against the Immortals. The assault marines, Chaplain, and Marine Unit 3 all assault the Lord and five remaining Immortals. Long story short, they cut them all down only losing one assault marine in the process and then the assault marines massacre into the remaining scarabs that are hiding near the wall. Marine Unit 3 makes their massacre towards the center of the board.

Necron Turn 4:
The Destroyers move to the edge of quarter two. Warrior unit B stays where they are, avoiding assault range for as long as possible. Warrior unit A also remains stationary. The four Destroyers take their shots on the side armour of the heavy bolter annihilator and destroy it. Warrior unit A rapid fires on Marine Unit 2 killing the remaining four marines. The assault troops and Chaplain who just consolidated into the scarab swarms kill three out of the four while the forth escapes and runs just behind the wall.

Space Marine Turn 4:
The Assault marines and Chaplain move into quarter 4. Marine Unit 3 moves just behind the piece of area terrain nearest the center in quarter 2. The remaining marine (with heavy bolter) from Marine Unit 1 doesn’t have line of sight to the last remaining scarab swarm so moves closer to it and then assaults it, they remain locked in combat for the rest of the game. The assault marines and Chaplain aren’t within assault range of warrior unit A so they single tap their pistols on them and choose not to fire the plasma pistol. No kills are made.

Necron Turn 5:
The Destroyers move slightly closer to the center of the board. Warrior Unit A gets into rapid fire range on the assault marines. Warrior Unit B sets up a firing line for when the assault marines get close. The Destroyers fire on Marine Unit 3 killing one while warrior unit A rapid fires on the assault marines also killing one.

Space Marine Turn 5:
The Assault marines and Chaplain move closer to warrior unit A while Marine Unit 3 moves around the piece of terrain they are hiding behind and into quarter 1. Marine Unit 3 shoots warrior unit B and kills one. The assault marines and Chaplain single tap and then assault warrior unit A, they massacre the warriors and move closer to warrior unit B, the last necron warriors on the board.

Necron Turn 6:
The Destroyers move closer to quarter 1 to get line of site to the assault marines while warrior unit B backs up to avoid assault range from Marine Unit 3 but still maintain rapid fire range on the assault marines. The destroyers fire on the assault marines and kill nothing. In a serious blunder and miscalculation on my part, my 9 warrior strong unit was 1” short of rapid fire on the assault marines.

Space Marine Turn 6:

There were four destroyers and nine necron warriors left on the board. Six necrons needed to be taken out in order for them to phase out. Shooting from the marines and assault marines brought down one and the proceeding assault from the assault marines and Chaplain brought down five more, causing Phase Out for the Necrons.

In the end all that remained on the board was a Chaplain, three assault marines, and seven tactical marines. It was a serious mistake putting my warriors out of rapid fire range, and one that I think cost me the game.

As soon as I read that he had a Chaplain w/Jump pack and an assault squad with a Pfist I knew there would be trouble. It cannot be overstated just how important it is to stay away from these guys. If you get in a fight with them, they will trash your units. It seems like they did all the killing against you. You've got to focus fire on them and/or stay out of their range. I know its tempting to veil out and kill tanks, but in general you need to reserve the veil for pulling units that get assaulted out of the fire.

Sounds like it was a good game though, you had a fine list, he had a fine list. Get him next time.

I've got to agree with 40k here, it seems that Space Marine Turn 3 is where things took a downhill turn with your Immortals and Lord getting wiped by the Assault Marines. You should have kept that Lord in the back since you saw that he had Assault Marines with a Chaplain.

What I am wondering is why were you firing your Destroyers at a tank? It seems that they could have been better used firing at the Assault Marines. Of course, this is conjecture because I wasn't there and I only have a base view of the board, but it still strikes me as odd.

Over all it just seems like he out played you with those Assault Marines, you'll get him next time - After all, the C'tan still hunger.

Nice report. Necrons are kind of like Tau with target priority; kill fast assaulters first. Necrons really don't have to worry about shooting that much, and I think if you concentrated all your fire on the Assault Marines you would have faired better.

I had a couple of questions though. How did the Scarab escape combat? They are fearless and never run from hand to hand. 40kenthusiast correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't phase out a Necron army in the bottom of the 6th round, because phase out happens after all WBB roles are made, which can't happen in the bottom of the 6th. Is that correct?

That's correct, unless you ask TGA. You only phase out if you have less than the Phase Out Number standing up, and nobody laying down.

Scarabs can't escape combat, unless you are pulling some artistic pile in moves. I've jumped Fire Warriors in the past, killed a bunch and had them roll snake eyes. You choose to pile in one unit in such a way that nobody in the other unit can make B2B with their 6" move and you can get out of combat.

In this Batrep it sounds like he forgot they were fearless though.

For a good portion of the game there was a piece of area terrain between the destroyers and his assault troops, I didn't have a camera so I did my best to describe the board. With regards to the scarab swarm we were'nt exactly sure what to do once all models within kill range had been removed, so we just rolled on it and let both units leave combat. We didn't have time to bring this up on the boards and I couldn't find anything in the rule book, we didn't want to delay the game so we just let the dice decide and left it at that.

Also I wasn't aware about not being able to phase out on the 6th turn. The way I and the rest of my gaming group understood it is that because they don't get a WBB roll at the end of the game you just need to knock down enough necrons to put them below phase out.
