Default Learning 3D modelling. First model Pulse Carbine

So I have decided to learn 3D studio max for 3d modeling. A friend has work going for me once I get the hang of it all. (will be a big jump from audio work) So after playing around for a week with the program I decided to make something as a first test run.

Of course I chose a Tau item.

It is supposed to look like the plastic model part, not like a real weapon, as I modeled it on a the plastic parts. I guess a good texture could make it look realistic.

It is actually going to be part of a gun drone, which is now about half way complete, but I thought I would post a render of the carbine for now.

For anyone who is interested, it took me a day to make, then about 3 hours to rebuild more efficiently. I think it has about 2500 polygons.

I haven't got the hang of texturing yet so its just the basic plastic material. Once I get the whole drone done I will probably try and make a texture for it.

CC are more than welcome.

I'm doing maya at school. We're lucky we get taught how to use it when we're 13 (its part of what persuaded me to do graphics GCSE)

That's pretty good though, how long have you been learning 3dsmax.

Certainly better than anything I can do.

Have to post something up sometime.

Maya.. at school..

I hate you :P

I'm on a freaking 3d design course and the best program they have is Google sketchup ¬_¬ you know.. the FREE program. They had AutoCAd, but none of the tutors know how to use it. Hell I can use photoshop better than all the tutors put together. Our Main tutor didn't know how to put text on it..

Heh very nice, No reference images too?
I also use 3ds max 9- and prefer it to maya.
Firstly it doesn't have the amount of daunting buttons,
Secondly Autodesk, who own max, brought out maya.
Thirdly 3ds doesn't sound like a sauce that id eat chips with. ;D

Texturing that rifle or even a drone shouldn't be too bad. Wish you luck

Timjim. Do you live in the UK?

because there's only about one or two schools in the country with it so it is exceedingly good luck for us.

I used to use sketchup when I knew I'd be using maya but hadn't started yet. There are four good things about it:

1) it is very easy to learn. In about an hour you can start making okish things.

2) The ability to paint different sides of a face different colours is useful

3) the ability to choose the point you rotate around

4) it showing you the mid-point on a line. This is very useful and I wish maya did this.

At my school though we only have two graphics teachers. One has been there for longer than me (so at least 3 years) and the other is new. The first is very good at maya and knows all the little tricks, the second is less good than me.

As luck would have it guess which one is my teacher. yep, the second one.

Oh well, at least my friend has the other teacher as his teacher and he tells me the stuff he gets taught.

Oh yeah, and the one who's good at maya's leaving.

Thantos.

but I like lots of daunting buttons.

Yeah I'm in the uk,
I guess it would be ok if the computers could actually run it smoothly.. and if the tutors knew how to use it..
The majority of our tutors are students from the years above.. so none of them no anything more than the course tutor ¬_¬
