Default The Hive Mind

Ive been reading about tyranids recently and am confused about the hive mind. Most people state that its just the collective consiousness of all tyranid creatures, but if thats so why do certain creatures have to stay in range of "synapse creatures"?

I think that the hive mind is an actual being that controls the tyranids telepathically. Whether its a physical being or a warp entity like the chaos gods, im not sure. but i remember reading somewhere that a portion of the bio-matter the tyranids gather is carried back somewhere out of the galaxy, possibly to feed something...The Hive Mind. i think the hive mind commands the tyranids using the synapse creatures as "focal points" for its commands, which would explain why tyranids with no synapse creatures around act souly on beastile instinct.

thats just my theory. id like to hear what you guys have to say on this matter. Do you think my theory may be right, or do you think ive just completely lost it

The Hive Mind is produced, more or less, by the Norn Queens; if the Norn Queen dies, the entire Synapse network pretty much collapses.

well, there are quite a few norn queens, most of them stay on hive ships most of the time IIRC.

personally, if the hive mind is a single entity, i would rather think of it as a giant space beast several times larger than the planet killer

Weirdly enough, I always though of the hive mind as something similar to the zergs:

EG: One Hive Mind (virtually unkillable)) with several cerebrate below him each controling a seperate brood supervised by overlord for 'local control'.

An from what i could understand 'nids kind of work that way

My easily explained theory.
This is gonna be tech talk.

The hive mind = Local server
Norn Queens = Routers
Synapse Creatures = Hubs
Gaunts/others = Computers.

Simple as that.

Bonegaurds idea makes the most sense to me. The hive mind acts as the complete controler of the tyranids as a whole while the norn queens act like cerebrates, controlling specific broods or in this case tendrils of the different hive fleets

Thank you Starcraft, is there nothing you cant solve ;D

i think 1st edition nids were made before starcraft, so it was 40k effecting starcraft

If my memory serves me correct(and my source).
Starcraft was a GW game. The tyranids = Zerg, the other alien dudes = eldar and the humans = space marines/guard.

Im not entirely sure about this but there is to many similaritys to ignore...
