Default Why are Space Marines called Space Marines

Marines are just soldiers who ride on boats and attack beaches/enemy ships.

Space Marines seem to do like everything so they should more appropriatly be called Space Soldiers or just Soldiers in general.

~Cheers~ (sometimes you wanna go...)

They do much more than that, my friend.

Because they are elite, and because when you create soldiers to fight onboard space ships or be delivered to a target by them I guess they're marines of a sort.

Marines are the soldiers of the navy. They do amphibious landings and boarding actions and stuff.
The 40k navy is in space. They have space marines, who are just perfect for, guess what? Boarding actions and drop pod assaults (the space>surface equivalent of amphibious assaults).

Yes, they do loads of other stuff too, but let me ask you this: when was the last time you heard of the US Marine Corps, or the Royal Marines or whatever acting like actual marines rather than just infantry? Not many naval actions going on in Iraq or Afghanistan, are there?

Of course, they also seem to do everything in 40k fluff because GW is head over heels in love with the armoured brutes and always insists on painting them as the saviours of any situation.

Marines tend to attack from ships in Orbit in lightning raids, I guess that's the closest you can get to amphibious assault in space.

Well, I suppose if you have frog men in space, any attack they made would be an amphibious assault.... - couldn't resists that one...

US Marines attack from ships, Space Marines attack from Space ships, although I don't know why the name just applies to the Astartes, since Guard can do the same thing, although indirectly if you get my drift

And that proves...? They don't just "Fight on Ships", they are members of an elite core of the military who specialize in sea-to-land invasions.
