Default Custodes? [minor spoilers for Flight of the Eisenstein]

In the Flight of the Eisenstein a character comes into contact with a Custode, of the Legiones Custode. This individual is described as being unto the Emperor as an Astartes is unto a primarch. The Custodian barefoot is as tall as a Luna Wolf in full power armor. He wears armor cut like that of a terminator, but worn as normal armor, and weilds a weapon known as a guardian spear, apparently a Custodes signature item.

I always thought that it was the Grey Knights who the space marines descended from the emperor, guess not.

ok, first Custodes aren't astartes, their gene warriors, second, guardian spears are halberds (used as spears) with a storm bolter attached to it. Third, slightly noobish question, so look here http://us.games-workshop.com/games/4...sy/default.htm

Very little is acutally known about the Customdes other than they are much more poqwerful than the average marine. How they are made or maintained has to my knowledge, never been done in fluff. As to the Grey Knights being of the genseed of the Emperor, well it is just a rumour and an assumption as the Grey knights are rather unique compared to other Marine chapters. Weither that is infact the source of the Grey Knight Geneseed is not known.

Taylor's mariens on the site are based off of some of the few drawings of the Custodes that are around.

The Custodes had rules back in Rogue Trader... a basic Custode had the stats of a Space Marine Major Hero (ie: Force Commander / Chapter Master!).

The Custodes also predate the Grey Knights by quite a while. Given the slow degradation of the Imperial technological base, it is likely that they can not create many warriors of the calibre of the Custodes any more. But since they rarely (if ever) go to war in the current era, they don't have the same problem with attrition that Marines do. So most members of the current force are probably as old as senior Space Marines. They do serve as representatives of the Emperor on occasion, though, which is pretty much the only time when any will leave Terra.

Their equipment has evolved since the Great Crusade, but not by very much. They have always been armed with Halberds, but the integrated weapon was upgraded from a Bolter to a Storm Bolter as they became available, and the halberd itself seems to have been upgraded from a Power Weapon to a Force Weapon. Incidentally, the Grey Knights also used this weapon in 2nd Edition, but switched to the seperate Storm Bolter gauntlet and Nemesis Force Weapon at some time in the recent past.

There was around a legion of custodes at the time of Horus Heresy, but as the Heresy took place, Theoretically I think that a lot were lost when the Traitor legions attacked Terra. So now theres only around a hundred left? So those who survived are at the level of experience as a Commander.

Most people say that the Emperor is the primarch of the Grey Knights, but its hard to say. Myself and others think the Emperor isn't the primarch of the Grey Knights. As Spiritbw pointed out "The source of the Grey Knight Geneseed is not known" which could mean that the Grey Knights weren't created by a Primarch but by the Ordos Millitant itself, since they wanted to create a pure force which could deal with the terrors of Man.

The Emperor can't technically be counted as a primarch of the Grey Knights for one good reason:

Primarchs are mighty commanders of individual legions. They're more than just the gene-seed originator. To be a Primarch you actually have to exclusively control that legion. That was their original purpose.

IIRC, the Custodes are maintained at a constant level of about 10,000 warriors. There are a few hundred, called the Companions, who are actually allowed into the Emperor's throne room.

Thanks for that actually, that's pretty cool. They're like the Immortals/Apple Bearers.

I thought the Grey Knight's gene-seed was a mix of all the gene-seeds from chapters that tunred traitor during the heresy?
