Default Machine Spirit Question

This question was brought on by emperors flame's question about Imperial Robots. Is the Mahcine Spirit found in SM vehicles an AI? Or is it some fictional or mystical spirit?

It is a simple AI, the Imperium regards it as a holy spirit type fo thing and beleive it is a real entity.

Machine Spirits on titans are "uploaded" animal brains (usually wolf or bear).

Or in some situations they don't exist at all. Someone quoted a Games Workshop book to me where they had to say a prayer to the machine spirit of a fire extinguisher in order to make it run. Often, it's just an ignorant man's explanation to why machines work.

Though some of them are clearly AI's.

Indeed. Some things, such as Power armor, ships, and other large machines do have the Machine Spirits.

Others, such as Water pumps, ordinary lasguns, and other such things are only meant to keep respect for all things not human and not xeno

Most of the technology used by the imperium does not have any AI at all. The machine spirits refered to are completley imaginary, conjured by ignorant tech priests.

For example if you're car doesn't work it's because the machine spirit is angry. To appease the machine spirit you could change the oil, fill the gas tank and rotate the tires. Then suprise suprise the machine spirit is happy and the car runs smoothly.

I always thought that a machine spirit was just an upgraded servitor.

From what I've read in White Dwarf and various rules and codex books the impression I've gotten is that "Machine Spirit" is used to refer to both the vague spiritual essence with which all man-made artifacts are imbued as well as the more specific AI.

Whereas the spiritual essence is venerated by the Mechanicus and general populace of the Imperium (in the case of the former as an aspect of the Omnissiah and by the latter as a result of ignorance and indoctrination), the AI is a real and tangible system integrated into various vehicles and other high-tech constructs.

The AI is a combination of hardware and wetware, i.e. manufactured components and biological components that performs calculations in the manner of a cogitator but remains under the control or influence of men via the limitations imposed by the presence of the biological components. That is to say the brains of servitors and the biomechanical nature of Machine Spirit AIs preclude the sort of disaster brought about by fully self-aware AIs as happened during the Robot Rebellion (another fictional example would be the Butlerian Jihad as detailed in the Dune novels). In game terms only the AI spirit has any impact on play; any reference to the more ethereal spirit is just fluff and Techpries mumbo jumbo.

Someday I'll learn to communicate in a more simplistic manner, but for now I'll remain wedded to my particular idiom. Me like big words.
