A chain sword is just a close combat weapon. Every model is assumed to have one close combat weapon...

So yeah if you feel like modeling chain sword wielding fire warriors go right ahead.

There's no background material for it, but it does look cool, so what's the harm?

Tau do not technically use and kind of chain weapons in battle. It's not said that they do. But all models are expected to have at least one Close Combat Weapon on their person, and if this is your choice, it'd certainly be okay for you to model yours after a Chainsword, or any other chain weapon.

Those are just Bonding Knives. They aren't technically used in battle. They're the result of a squad undergoing a trial by fire sort of thing. They're just there to confer special abilities to a squad with one on their Shas'ui.

Nonetheless, I can definitely see a Farsight Enclave member pulling a Chainsword out and using it.

All Tau Fire Warriors are probably going to carry some kind of small close-combat weapon. They don't like close combat, but they aren't stupid. In addition, a small knife is essential to a lot of tasks a soldier may need to perform outside of combat, such as cutting through defenses, making splints, opening rations, etc. It would be a tool as much as a weapon. Since Tau don't seem to have Power Weapon technology, I imagine they also have powered saws of some kind for use in forestry and construction.

But I don't see the Tau actually constructing Chainswords for their own use, and those they capture from the enemy would quickly run out of fuel.

Using examples you said Khanaris, Tau like things that have multiple uses like Mantas which can act as titans, bombers in space, and troop transports. Normal lagre knives would work well for cutting bandages, eating, seting up camp, etc. Chain swords are weapons ment only for war and destruction. These weapons also require some up keep and fuel to use while axes or knives can have domestic jobs along with killing. The Cadre would have chain saws for clearing areas but when a normal Shas'la is in camp it's hard to cut up something using a chainsaw than a knife.
