Default Officio Assassinorum

There are 4 assassins Culexus the vampire, Callidus the shape shifter, Vindicare the sniper and Eversor the wined-up killing machine. However there is 6 assassin temples mentioned in the old assassin codex. who are these and what do they do?

Also if you wish to debate the character of the mentioned above assassins then by all means.

This has been covered quite a bit before. The two other temples are Venenum and Vanus. Venenum specialises in the use of poisons, and it is unknown what Vanus does although there is of course speculation.

My own theory on Vanus is that they are espionage and sabotage experts, excelling even beyond their fellow Assassin Temples.

Vanus, to me, are masters of unseen death. The hallmark of the Vanus is an almost Final-Destination style killing, where everything conveniently goes wrong in a suitably fatal manner.

For example, the Governor of a palace might find himself in a lift accident where not only does the cable snap, but the emergency deadlock brakes inexplicably fail... an occurence with a probability so staggeringly low that it virtually never happens... and when it does, it's probably because most of the building is now missing.

Or, perhaps, a Shas'O may be killed in a training simulation when, inexplicably, one of the Tau weapons was loaded with live ammunition. Perhaps the Ork Warboss is trampled by a rampaging Squiggoth, or a Chaos Lord finds that his plasma pistol overloads at exactly the wrong moment...

When you are hunted by a Vanus, it seems the entire galaxy is out to get you...

Here's what a latin dictionary comes up with for some of the temples (Vindicare and Culexus didn't turn up any results):

Eversor = "A destroyer"
Callidus = "Clever, dextrous, experienced, skilful/cunning, sly"
Venenum = "Drug, poison, potion"
Vanus = "Empty, void"

Since the first three translations seem to be pretty good descriptions of the temples, perhaps "Empty, Void" has something to do with the nature of Vanus?

It did give other meanings for Vanus, namely "vain, idle, worthless, meaningless" which I don't think could have much to do with an assassin temple :P.

maybe by empty and void they mean you don't know it was them that did it.

I would guess that the "empty" kind of definition fits wargamers. After all, it will probably be presumed to be an accident....
And nobody would even think of the assasin.

I would have thought of "empty" meaning something Souless with the Pariah-gene... but that's already covered by another temple.

They conducted the assasination, but they were never there...

That kind of works. After all, when the other assassins have done their work, there's generally no doubt over whether they were assassinated or not.

Well, let's look at the "Hallmarks" of each Temple;

Callidus: The Hallmark of a Callidus is betrayal. The Callidus Assassins often use their skills to assume the role of an important member of the enemy command structure, and slowly, carefully, lead their "allies" to destruction.

Culexus: Fear is the tool of the Culexus. These Soulless killers spread terror and dread whever they go, and that cannot be easily hidden. You'll know the Culexus is responsible because any survivors are gibbering wreaks.

Eversor: The Eversor works by bloody mayhem. They do not do subtle; they go in, blast and hack the hell out of everything, and leave only eviscerated corpses in their wake.

Vindicare: The Vindicare's tool is the sniper rifle, so their calling card is the headshot.

Now, remember that Temples use a variety of tactics. For example, there is a story about a Callidus Assassin poisoning three-hundred people in a single act, or a Vindicare blowing up a Gargant with demolition charges. As such, just because someone is poisoned it doesn't mean a Venenum did it, or just because someone was shot you cannot assume it was a Vindicare.
