Default Where are the nukes?

If AM can make high energy magnetic whatever weapons, why can't they build nukes any more? You'd think they would be pretty effective against orks and tyranids. Actually, they'd be pretty effective against everyone besides Dark Eldar, really. Fusion bombs are only mentioned a few times in the fluff I've read, and they're all Exterminatus sorts of weapons, no tactical stuff at all.

Wouldn't orbital strikes be like a high-powered nuke? I don't play SM or anything like that, but I think orbital strikes are similar in terms of large-scale powerful explosion.

From what I've seen they are direct energy weapons...

Well, even though they are IG, would you want to sacrifice them to a thermonuclear device? The price of the unit far outweighs that of the nuke, and thus it would probably not be used, not even power armor can survive, fluff wise, a suit of Technical Dreadnaught Armour can, but that is because they were designed for use in Fusion Reactors.

In the fluff, it can be assumed that Nukes are still used...the rebellion on Krieg and the birth of the Death Korps are a perfect example of this. As for in tabletop, I assume that the area covered by a board is far to small for a nuke to be used, it would destroy both armies in the process!

I think most battles are fought in areas where both sides want something (and blowing it up with a nuke is a bad idea).

Orbital Strikes aren't nukes, unless they've come up with nukes than damage only the area right around terrain pieces.

Nukes are used, but as I said it seems only in Exterminatus sorts of ways. They're never used tactically (e.g. lob a small one into that ork mob which is several miles outside the city) as far as I can tell.

Yes they are. Tactical nukes are used in some Deathstrike ICMB warheads.

Real men fight in tanks!

Yup, nukes are still around. In fact one Titan Base on Armageddon was leveled by a Nuclear weapon. However, there are weapons that in 40k have equivalent destructive power, without the side effects(area isn't irrated/poisoned). if your trying to take an are which is a better weapon? A messy nuke or a high yield melta-bomb?

A high yield "messy" nuke due to the fact that it destroys, creates, and then destroys matter around a certain radius where it explodes.

EDIT: Sorry, didnt se the "take an area part" I'd use a low yield nukelar weapon that has little to no radiation

Besides, what's cooler? A nuke or a plasma/cyclonic/melta/virus bomb?
