Default Imperial battleships, can they still build them?

Hi, I wanted to know whether Humanity has the the ability to build any more battleships/cruisers? If you read some fluff, it says that these battleships use ancient systems that Humaity will never be able to produce on a large scale again. They might be able to still build frigates and escorts, but without the capital ships, how would the Imperium fair?

The Imperium can still build large ships. Heck, there are reports of a Lunar Class being built in orbit of a Feral world by using raw materials mined by the primitive populace, and accepted as "sacrifice" every solstice!

Whilst they probably can still build Battleships, it is generally easier to recover a Hulk and rebuild than totally scratch-build a new ship.

Imperial shipyards still turn out cruisers by their hundreds. I assume they can still build battleships too (seeing as we know for certain they can still construct Astartes Battlebarges for newly founded chapters), but it's probably not cost effective to do so in large numbers. You could probably build an entire fleet for the cost of a single Retribution, they're only useful in large battles (useless for patrols and skirmishes) and each one needs to be escorted by at least a dozen other ships at all times.

Rogue Star gives the cost of a single plasma torpedo as being the same as a Dauntless sized light cruiser.....

Yeah... I think that's probably wrong...

200ft Torpedo = 2-3 mile long warship... nope, can't see it happening.

Simple going by whats written in Rogue Star - Lucian orders his son never to fire their last torpedo, as they can't afford to replace any in his fleet, because they cost as much as a cruiser.

I'd assume its to do with the containment, warhead, guidance etc. I think it's a bit off, and am just pointing out what is written.

Perhaps it's some kind of special torpedo that is no longer made - some sort of collectors item - and cost as much as renting a cruiser for a single run. I never read the book, though, so I can't tell, but a single torpedo being as expensive as constructing a several kilometres long cruiser is a no.

If modern Earth lost most of its technology, it might be cheaper to build a full-size old-fashioned trireme than to recreate a tiny little inflatable boat - especially with all the materials science required for producing rubber and plastic, and all the fiddly little metal bits in the engine.

The Imperium has more than enough raw materials to produce ships and the cheap labor to build them. So cost will not necessarily increase with size. I am guessing that the torpedo in question was probably something that can no longer be replaced, or that the Forge Worlds can't produce in sufficient quantities to arm fringe elements like Rogue Traders. The Torpedo in question was basically a one-hit kill against an undamaged Tau heavy cruiser, so it was probably something pretty special. It was definitely described as costing more to replace than a cruiser though.

There are going to be systems in Battleships that the Imperium can no longer produce. The oldest ships in the Imperium are thus often the most capable and trusted. Newer ships often have to make to with jury-rigged systems and inferior components. But they can still build all the different classes as long as they have the STCs for their hulls. They just may not have exactly the same components as those of older ships.

I recall reading that torpedos were mainly military hardware that Rogue Traders normally had trouble aquiring; having access to full-scale warships but not torpedos seems mundanely stupid, but that's GW...
