What language does the imperium speak? English? or does that not exist? I was told they speak High and Low Gothic, does High and or Low Gothic sound like German?

Didnt they say Terra was just Earth with fantasy creatures? Suppose Terra means the same thing but... Is it the Warhammer world that is based off Earth?

The Imperium speaks High and Low gothic, along with a whole bunch of other regional/planetary languages. Depends where you are in the Imperium really, but High and Low gothic are the "official" two.

Most planets have their own dialect or language. Low gothic is a common language spoken throughout the Imperium, kind of like english is today, but it is likely that a person from the Fringe would speak an entirely different form of low gothic than a person from Cadia. High gothic is also a language spoken throughout the Imperium, but is reserved for the more educated citizens, much like latin is today. The languages are translated into english and crappy latin so we can read them, what they really sound like has never been stated.

Read somewhere a VERY long time ago... it was in the fluff bible :-\, that the low gothic is a combination of languages. Not 100% sure on this, not even 70% really, but it was english in combination with eastern pacific languages. I thought I read it wronge the first time I read it, thats the only reason I remember it at all. That could of been high gothic instead, can't really remember much of what I read. Its in the fluff bible though, near the begining.

It has been proven, via Damnatus, that Low Gothic is, in fact, German. This conclusion comes from the fact that 40K is so much cooler when people in it speak German. ;D

Yeah, even in dawn of war... wait... in Winter Assault, Sturrn/Sturnn speaks with an american accent... The Guardsmen voices sound like star wars clones...

It'd be cool for games workshop to make a High/Low Gothic language thingy for word like they had done for the Tau.

That is more of a font though.

English and Latin are used to represent the two languages for convenience, theme, and also to show the relationship between them, much like Tolkien did in LotR with English as 'Westron' and Anglo-Saxon as 'Rohirric'. Tolkien did if for proper names too, for all the names of the human or hobbit characters. Frodo isn't 'really' called Frodo, etc. Same would apply in the 40k universe, I'd say. Even GW's shaky grasp on the 'sci' part of 'sci-fantasy' can't get around the principles of language change. Just look at how much English alone has changed in only 1000 years. After 40,000 years of language change, Low and High Gothic would be completely unrecognizable from any ancestor languages and it would almost certainly be impossible to trace their origins.

It is possible of course that Low Gothic sounds like German. Nothing implausible there.
