Default Why don't Grey knights use normal marine equipment?

We all know the grey knights. The gleaming guys in shining armor, and the last blockade between humans and daemons.
But, I came across a question while looking at some model pics. The grey knights are also space marines, so why don't they use stuff like devastator squads and jump packs? Are they to "holy", or is there some other, deep meaning to it?

Hmmm... They're primarily meant for lightning fast strikes into areas where they are massively outnumbered. They need to be able to move quickly, so, no devastators. I'm not sure about why they don't use jump-packs...

Heya,

Grey Knight weapons and armor are literally attuned to the psychic field of the user, specifically. In the fluff, they use things like Drop Pods from their Strike Cruisers, all protected by several anti-daemonic Wards to allow them the fastest unhindered travel to get to where they need to be. They do use things like Devastator squads, but they use different guns. Psycannons and Incinerators are what they use--these do not resemble lascannons obviously, but fluffwise, these destroy daemonic flesh and entities just like lascannon destroy tanks. There's no real mention of Knights using Jump Packs because they literally are drop podded to the surface, or teleported, after their primary purgation waves have already started.

Cheers!

It's always been my view that a Codex doesn't show the 'full picture' of an army, and doesn't show every unit in every possible configuration. Take Eldar as an example - the Codex has none of the rarer Aspects, and no Bonesingers. But both of these things certainly exist. So to that end, I believe that fluffwise Grey Knights would have access to Jump Packs, Rhinos and Razorbacks. There are certainly times when these would be useful even for Grey Knights.

Devastators - Grey Knights have the Purgators, a direct equivalent. In the game they can field 4 of the normal special weapons (Psycannons or Incinerators) instead of the 2 that regular Grey Knights field. The limited weapon types can be put down to Grey Knights specializing in anti-Chaos fighting, though again, fluffwise you'd think they'd find uses for some Lascannons and Meltaguns. After all, in the game their characters can purchase Melta Bombs and the Grey Knight Landraider has Lascannons.

Overall, I don't think there's a really airtight justification for them not having these typical Marine bits of equipment. The 'true' reason they don't is so that they are substantially different from Marines on the tabletop.

Given the fact that chaos often uses possessed vehicles, I can't really see why they wouldn't have anti tank weapons. Assault marines seem fluffy as well, given how some daemons can fly.

Really, I can't see why purge squads can't have lascannons... It seems like they just don't want grey knights to work as a stand alone force.

Their tactics and purpose are very different to that of marines, which is why they dont use codex astartes styled armies. Whenever they do need it they can just call in space marine allies, like black templars and deathwatch.

No, they'd never usde Rhinos/Razorbacks because in fluff they use LRs when they need transports- in the stories there are no points costs.

I think the Land Raiders and Dreadnoughts are what they use to kill Chaos vehicles- the Blessed upgrade.

Purgation squads are their Devs as has been previously stated.

Assault squads just don't seem to fit.

I'd have tears of joy if they gave GKs drop pods...

And if all else fails, tanks can be blown up from orbit...

Hmmm, if I were faced with a greater daemon, I would rather have 4 lascannons than 4 incinerators or psycannon....

Apart from the greater daemon of korn, a pycannon has a much better chance of damaging a GD then a LC. think with the ST of 6 which is wounding on a 4+ and no 4+ invulnerable save and 12 shots from the squad it puts 4 wounds on average on a greater daemon which is far better than the 1.11 wounds on average that 4 lascannon shots will.

Even Korn with his 3 plus sv would still fail on average 2.67 saves which again is far better than the 1.11 from 4 lascannons.

so even in game terms psycannons are much more affective against Gd's
