Default Tau, Trench Warfare Kings?

I was thinkign about the Tau's method of warfare and it dawned on me they would be very effective at trench warfare.

1 Trenches provide and excellent firing base for static troops

2 trenches and no man's land are the bane of mobility to land troops which is why...

3 flying troops and anti grav vehicles could easily float from trench, to trench without being damaged or slowed

so basically the tau's vehicles and battlesuits would let them take a huge adavntage over land based armies in trenches. Even when on the offensive they would have an advantage. kroot might not do as well but with a devilfish/hammerhead screen (they could rpobably even get low enough to smash soem barbwire) they might make it across in strog enough numbers to drive the nemey back and let the Fire warriors come out.

Well, remember that they don't believe in static warfare (on a grand scale). Nor do they have the troops (numbers) for attrition.

Maybe they would be suited for such a role games-wise.

The Imperial Guard is the ultimate kings of trench warfare, no doubt in my opinion.

well lets discuss this further, why d you think IG are so good in the trench? i can see them have number advantage, but how do you think they would fair when trying to cross no man's land through a wave of pulse fire and constant shelling from hammerheads and orbitals.

The IG's veiw on warfare is the same as Zapp Brannigan's (throw wave of troops at it untill you win) and the tau's is a swift raid with very detail planned to the last

I don't see a Tau trench firing back a lot after an afternoon of Imperial artillery and orbital bombardment.

The fact that Tau have more powerful guns means nothing in such a situation. If a man comes charging at you across no-mans land, a lasgun bolt will down him just as easily as a pulse rifle round.

Tau cannot fight trench warfare. Period. By digging in, you give away the initiative and expect massive losses. Tau cannot survive in an attritive war.

Keep in mind that tanks effectively obsoleted trenchfighting; and even if armies with tanks are going to fight a trench war, eveyone has tanks in 40k, so you can forget an advantage of mobility over your opponents.

Guard can win a trench war because they have men to spare, equipment rugged enough to survive the conditions, and masses of armoured vehicles and heavy weapons designed for a static firebase approach to combat. Tau have none of the above; their heavy weapons are entirely dependant on heavy jump troops and vehicles, neither of which realy have any place in trenchfighting.

Guard don't have to cross no man's land - they send machines or just flood it with troops.

Realistically, going into a trench warfare kind of war would be suicide for the Tau in 99% of the circumstances I can think of. They generally don't excel at it.

Ig is good simply because they have the numbers and firepower - the 2 most important elements in a war of attrition.

Tau simply don't have the numbers. They are a relatively small race in the 40k universe. And I don't think they could afford to waste 1000's of troops. They would probably use some amazing technology to jump around and stuff.

leave the crap for the Guard to deal with! :

Tau also simply don't have the right weapons for such a fight.

Imp guard has the Griffon, Medusa, Basilisk, Mortars and such.

Tau rifles are superior, but are they as durable? What could the Tau do if their Ammo Dump took a bunker buster round from a Griffon? Guard can recharge their lasguns almost effortlessly.

Tau fight mobilly. If they got forced into a true war of attrition they would lose; they are so terribly outmanned by everyone under the sun except Eldar and Necrons they would be overrun.
