What do NORMAL citizens do all day? The marines fight, the IG fight, the Ordos fight. What do the civilians do for entertainment and fo jobs?

Stand around and wait to be recruited. :

Seriously, they do what everyone does; they work, they play, they eat, sleep, worship, have sex and die... though not necessarily in that order, or all on the same day.

It obviously depends to a certain extent what world you're talking about. On, say, a Hive World like Necromunda, the civilian population pretty much does nothing else but work, eat and sleep. They have no knowledge of a better life, so they are content to toil in the factories till they drop dead. Agri-world inhabitants would almost exclusively be farmers. And so on.

Normal people in the 40k universe are like us but with more varied jobs. They go to the office sit at a monitor and work for about ten-fifteen hours, then they go home and sleep. Pretty boring if you think about it. In hives the people might just sit there and do what they want if they are rich or work menial tasks for hours on end. Normal people aren't mentioned because they lead really really boring lives. Would you rather watch a man sneak around with an uzi killing terrorist like Bond or watch a regular Joe go to work?

It is going to vary dramatically based on the world in question. On Hive Worlds, most citizens in the underclasses are either criminals or else chained to their workstation, working and eating there, and sleeping under their bench. They are utterly hellish places for most of their citizens. The upper classes live in luxury, with very little to do. Within the administratum, most people are going to be scribes, repeating rote and basically meaningless tasks from birth until their death. Imperial philosophy considers most people under its direct control mere cogs in a colossal machine.

Further out, where the rule of the Imperium is not as heavy or direct, you are likely to see more "normal" patterns of life.

I imagine they'd just have jobs like everyday modern people on earth.

A major thing to note is that people's work often depends upon a world's self-sufficiency. For example, more isolated worlds like those on the Eastern Fringe are likely to be more self-sufficient, producing all their own goods. Therefore you're likely to see a greater variety of job types, except for fewer people responsible for offworld trade. And vice versa.

I reckon that most the jobs would be more towards the war effort, mining and such like, before they get killed (if they're unlucky) or recruited (if they are very unlucky)

After reading the beganning of Necropolis, I see that they are not much different from us... It is almost like... We are from the same family as them. :P
