Default Those crazy Inquisitors.

Despite all my attempts to just understand them and be able to write about them. I just can't figure out the mind of an inquisitor. What is their drives and motives? Half of them seem to be doing things for personal agenda but then the other half seems to concern themselves with actually inquisitional mandate. I am going to exclude the ones who end up turning to chaos, they are traitors, they don't matter. I am pulling my hair out just trying to see things from their point of veiw!

Please give me an insight to the crazed mind of the Inquisitor?
Make it concrete and not just one sentence answers.

PURITAN FACTIONS
Thorians
The Thorians trace their origins to the Age of Apostasy, and the overthrow of Lord Vandire by Sebastian Thor. To some Inquisitors it was evident that Thor moved with a divine purpose, and was instilled with some of the power and charisma of the Emperor Himself. It is their belief that the Emperor walks among us. Having been shorn from the physical realm by the wounds inflicted by Horus, he once again must choose vessels to do His work, as he did so before the Age of Strife. The flesh maintained in the Golden Throne is not the Emperor, for he travels abroad, tending to His Divine Will, instilling His power into those who have been chosen. But these are frail, mortal bodies which can possess only a fraction of the Emperorís power, and are ultimately destined to die of injury or old age. But what if the Emperor could be granted a body that does not wither and die, that could be His vessel for all eternity to come? The Thorians believe that such a thing is possible, that the Emperor yet waits for His new body to be found or created. In essence, a new Emperor will be created to lead Mankind to its destiny and conquest of the galaxy. The Thorians seek ways that energy and consciousness interact with the warp, and their transferral from one to the other. They delve into the secrets of possession and manifestation by daemons and other warp entities, trying to decipher what rules govern the relationship between the Warp and the material universe. It is You accuse me of being a madman. What right have you to judge what is sane and what is not? Their dream that one day they shall find a host suitable for the Emperorís magnificence, and through prayers and ritual be able to guide His spirit into His new body, allowing the Emperor to once again walk amongst His people.
The Thorians can mostly be found amongst the ranks of the Ordo Malleus, where they can study the power of warp-based creatures in the material realm, gleaning understanding about the Emperorís abilities to manifest His Divine Will in our universe. A fair number can be found inside the Ordo Hereticus, where the course of their duties allows them to find out as much as possible concerning Sebastian Thor and other such gifted Saints in the Ministorumís long history. There are quite a number of Resurrectionist cults and factions within the Ecclesiarchy, and these create a very useful network and provide foot soldiers for Thorian Inquisitors. Relatively few are found in the Ordo Xenos, though there are some who believe the answer to achieving the Thoriansí aims can be found in the sophisticated psychic technology utilised by the Eldar and other ancient races. The Thoriansí opponents claim that even if it were possible to resurrect the Emperor into a new mortal body, it would cause a schism across the Imperium more dangerous than any heresy or civil war that has gone before. Believers in the resurrection and unbelievers would violently clash, and a large part of the Imperium would be destroyed in a massive war of faith. Even if this does not happen, nobody knows what changes the Emperorís power underwent upon His Ascension, and whether he would lose them were he once more confined to a physical shell Ė most importantly, how would the Astronomican work were the Emperor able to move around freely once more? It is the risk to these very foundations of the Imperium that opponents to the Thorians find most worrying, and many believe that they are risks not worth taking. The Thorians claim that to take Mankind onto the next phase of evolution, the Emperor must be able to lead His people, both physically and spiritually.

More later...

Well, no offence mage, but you could just check out the inquisitor rule-book on GW's specialist site. It has loads and loads of fluff.

Put simply, it changes with the individual.

I've played many different Inquisitors in, well, Inquisitor, ranging from the loyal-but-loathed Radicalist Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Lord, Hlane Draconis, to the iron-willed conviction of the Witchhunter Inquisitor, Tyrus.

The motives, reasoning, agendas, sanity, personal hygene levels and loyalties of the Inquisition are so insanely varied you can do almost anything and still be within canon.

My take on Inquisitors is that they are all drunk on power and corrupt! not Chaos-corrupted, but real world Corrupted. They receive their training and authority, then simply go and do whatever they want! Some get out of control and become a Tyrant or Rebel, and are hunted down by other Inquisitors... but otherwise, they are all ridiculously overpowered individuals, granted full authority by the ruling faction, that are at least brainwashed in the dogma to act in a tyrannical way that is in line with imperial needs.. up to a point.

So, If you were going to write about an inquisitor, the reason you probably couldn't figure them out is: you tried to frame them in a good, loyal light!! But they are more like the Corrupt Bureaucrat (Caligula comes to ind)who can have anyone killed that displeases him, etc. and continues to do the job because he purely enjoys all of the absolute power afforded to him. Its a dark and lousy way to live, which fits into the 40k world nicely!

So, Inquisitors run amok for a few centuries each, and gradually become a bit more and more weird/odd, until they finally cross the line and become traitors/heretics. They may be completely oblivious to their slow drift to corrupted traitor- seeing their world exactly as they think it should be(since THEY are the allpowerfull being who says it should be so), or they may perceive it in themselves, and play a long drawn out game of deception and counterdeception, playing the part of the good Inquisitor, while paranoidally seeing plots and Assassins wherever they go, and bringing that fear/paranoia to their JOB.

This fits pretty well for the way I see those eccentric, paranoid, genocidal inquisitors... heh.. but the funny thing is, maybe they are maneuvered into being that way on purpose!! Wouldn't a highly powerfull and humanly corrupt individual (or a witch hunter who was a freaking psyker!!), who is paranoid and terrified of being exposed... make for an EXCELLENT Inquisitor?? You BET!

Imagine having almost unlimited power. Imagine being trained from a young age to use this power for the Emperor. Imagine everyone around you submitting to you.

It will result in vastly different personalities from every Inquisitor. One guy's a hard-nosed bitch who likes to see people squirm, the other is a curious guy with a thirst for knowledge. You decide how this special situantion effects them.

No one in the 40k universe, not even the Inquisitors, are innocent, so much powers corrupts them.

Such as it corrupts normal men.
