Default Favourite fluff piece

What is your favourite 40k background story? I'm not talking BL novels here, just the short stories or page-long blurbs that GW publishes.

As of now, I am loving the Ork Hunters story on the Armageddon website.

No doubt my opinion will change within the next week or so, but there you go.

Yeah mine to, but for now the bit of fluff on page 34-35 of the CSM codex, the stuff about primitive chaos cultist wars, its cool. Kind of makes you think about the scale of things that we take for granted in 40k, like how 20 SMs can put the hurt down on an entire army.

All the tau have to worrie about is going off course, not having their souls eaten and their bodies being worn as a tuxedo to a slaughter-party

"And we shall know fear!"-honored battle cry of the SMs also known as Sissy Marines. The chapter was later declared Worthless Extrimis after crying when shot at by Orks in the chapters first engagment. In the AER (After Execution Review) Inquistor Exter said "It was just breaking my heart to see those grown marines cry."

i like the fluff on page 3 in the chaos space marine codex. it would be cool to see a chaos dreadnought charging out from the jungle, guns blazing, crashing into enemy lines.

I loved the piece in the beginning of the Cityfight codex with sergeant Marnok and Lieutenant Badenhall.

Real men fight in tanks!

I'd have to say it's probably the old Eldar one which ends with a Warlock noting that as soon as he takes off his War Mask, he'll feel sorry for all the dead around him...even if now he hungers only for death and ruin.

You just reminded me of another great one I always loved - the story of the Farseer being stalked across a lonely, barren world by a Culexus Assassin from the POV of the Farseer. One of the best non-human POV fluff pieces ever written, in my view.

One of my favorites is Rynn's Might. A Land Raider's Machine Spirit goes rambo on some orks!

Sly Marbo's fluff was fun fun fun. "I'll keep it safe for you son, next to all the others."

That one where the Navigator is sitting in his chambers when the Gellar Fields fail. That was goood. Summary:

I like the bit of fluff about Gryphonne IV falling.

It's actually really significant as it's an important world with lots of fluff surrounding it already. So it showed some progression in the 40K storyline.

Plus it was just cool, one world vs Leviathan, standing defiant and dying to the last man/machine.

If the Imperium would have stood with the Adeptus Mechanicus at that battle, I really think Leviathan could have been broken. There are probably less than 25 planets in the entire Galaxy better defended than Gryphonne IV was, so the Imperium decides to just let it die. If your not going to stop them there, your not going to be able to stop them anywhere short of Terra itself.
