Default Borokash, New race (updated 10/08/07)

First off, i have no intention to be uber cheesy with this, they are my own creation and probably wont even make it to the table top, i havent actually made the stats yet only the fluff - y - ness behind them. Please have a gander and tell me what you think.

If anybody wonders, i have taken some inspiration from Robert Pullman, Dark Matter Trilogy.

Happy Reading

(Wargamer don't bite!!)

Borakash

Borakash (plural) Borokashan (singular) are large white-grey creatures that resemble what a human would call a bear. There are some differences however, a Borakashan is larger than a bear, standing 9-10 ft tall when on hind legs, they have opposable thumbs meaning they are very dextrous. Their hard claws and calloused paws mean they can shape and cut hot metal by hand. From an early age they are taught by the Elders in the Clan how to work metal.

When the children reach adult hood, they are sent into the mountains to the forge caves, where the rocks are always red hot and lava flows close to the surface. The young are then required to forge their own armour, suffering the burns and singed fur perfecting the inch thick metal, to flow with their own shape and provide the protection they need for battle. To the Borakash, their armour is a symbol of their prowess and dignity. They created that armour, and its that armour that they will fight with and die with.

Hierarchy and Culture

The Borakash live in Clans, each Clan has a territory on each planet, made up of equal parts. There are eight Clans all in all, with some smaller ones branching off. Some of them carry slight differences between them, for example The Aruch Clan is known for its technological advances, it has the largest amount of Elders, known as Echred who, to humans would be known as scientists. They have dabbled with many areas of technology, especially advancing the Borakash space crafting using Tau technology. They have also created more advanced weapons than the catapults and crossbows used in previous times.

Borakash And Tau

Powerful in stature, and very intelligent, these beings have colonised a few planets around the edge of Tau controlled space. They are a very small race, even in comparison with the Tau which are fledglings in the grand scheme of things. They maintain contact with the Tau, being mainly peaceful, the Tau benefited from accepting the Borakash and their ways.

Communication was difficult at first, the Borakash language being very guttural and rough. However the Water Caste are very resourceful and created and synthesiser which alters the acoustics of a Tauís voice to sound rougher and deeper, without the strain.

The Borakash brought many benefits to the Tau; their natural tendency to using and plying metal with their powerful paws and diamond hard claws, natural blacksmiths, even the Borakan ancestors had advanced metal skills, creating armour and weapons for the clan wars. The valuable minerals found on the planets the Borakash control are valued very highly by the Tau, they are being used to produce new prototype weapons. Borakash in turn are granted amnesty from the Tau, for not joining the greater good, and are also entitled to trading technology for their metal work. Giving them acces to some of the Tau knowledge, but not enough for them to re create the fabled Rail Guns and other high powered weapons.

The Borakash have not joined the greater good for the simple reason that they have no beliefs of such a nature, from an early age in their evolution they developed a clear frame of mind upon which their culture is based. They know no fear from gods, or evil spirits and demons, like the Tau they have never had contact with the warp. What the Borakash believe in is, Honour and Rank. Honour is the highest valued object which a Borakashan can hold, respect from their peers and elders makes them rich within their Clan. They do not strive to please a God, or create a better world, or even bring destruction, they wish to grow and prosper, creating allies which they can respect and trust. They believe that they are Borakash, they live, striving for respect and awe from their clan, and die, hopefully in a courageous way as to be remembered by their family. They have no concept of life after death, and simply know that when they die, they will become part of the ecosystem they once took from when living, they will join their ancestors in the metal and earth they work so well with.

War

While sounding like a very peaceful race, they are in fact a devastating war machine when the Clans battle, or on occasions when they unite and war against an immediate threat. Prior to the Tau encounter, the Elders told of great battles between the Clans, resulting from a dishonour to one family from another. Things like this could not be brushed off like many humans would. If one family was to* dishonour another in a clan, the whole clan is shamed and must redeem its name in Blood. The clans would line up across a field opposite each other, 100 Iktar (1km) distance between them. The shamed, shamer and the leaders from the clans would parley in the middle. The shamed Borakashan would have the chance to offer the culprit a duel, which would result in the death of one of them, if they could not duel then the clans would wage war.

These rather peaceful creatures would become efficient war machines. When raised on their rear legs they stand around 9-10 ft tall, powerful muscles ,hefty weight and those claws able to score metal made them fierce close combatants. Carrying their inch thick, plate armour which they make for themselves they charge into each other, ripping, snarling and* clawing. Fighting until one side submits to the others domination. Clan leaders, Rechvlers, cannot afford to lose all of their kinsmen, with out them the clan would fail, they have to realise when they are beat.

Other than the close combat abilities, the Borakash have other fighting methods. In the past using catapults and other means of hurling mass, they launched highly flammable matter, which bursts into white hot flames in mid air, these crash into the enemy and wreck havoc. Nowadays they use artillery, being too large for tanks themselves.

They also have a smaller ally on their home world, a small creature not unlike a monkey, sharper features. The Tau have remarked at how these Grechter resemble a smaller version of Kroot. They have the same ferocity, but lack the stature and strength the Kroot possess. These creatures are known as Grechter. Unlike the Borakashan, who are peaceful unless provoked, the Grechter live for battle and blood shed. They are highly intelligent usually battle amongst themselves, from tree to tree they would use basic crossbows and slings and knock each other down from the canopies. They are skilled with projectile weapons, and the Borakash saw this as a great potential partnership. Working together the Borakash became missile platforms and continues to use this tactic today.

With what the Tau will trade them, and their own intelligence, they are able to make powerful guns, not to the same cailbur as Tau but enough to provide a flexability to their tactics, and the ability to engage different enemies.

Since meeting the Tau, the Borakash have become more confident with space travel, they can move further away than the closest few planets that they have already colonised. The Tau are not seen as a threat, they are an honourable ally that has helped them on a number of occasions, and the Borakash have returned the favour also. While not being part of the greater good, the Tau realise that they have no other beliefs which are contrary to the Tau own, and are quite happy to live beside them. They have been useful in war against the Orks, which have plagued nearly every planet that they have colonised.

I hope someone out there sort of liked it. These are not be played as mercs at all for the Tau and what not. Just an army that has dealing with the Tau on occasion.

Thanks

I actually quite like this idea. It's well thought out and the race occupies a niche that GW hasn't touched on. ;D

No, they are the great bears from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy, one of the best written, and blasphemous ever

Because it had the Christian church being evil and sadistic, and Lucifer as fighting the Great Enemy (God) for freedom from his control.

It also gave a mortal boy a weapon to kill God.

Needless to say, they couldn't see past fiction (hello? TALKING BEARS!!!) and said it was blasphemous and heretical, and tried to ban it (harder than the Da Vinci Code, funnily enough)

I actually thought this was pretty interesting and well thought out..it reminds me slightly of what I've heard of the squats actually. Nice work.

Have you got any ideas about their army list yet, if you're planning on making one?
